Old Wright 1" drive ratchet N-820

I have an old Wright N-820, 1" drive, ratchet. I need a renewal kit. I opened it up and saw that the pawl tip was damaged. I tried to flip it over to see if I could get it to work, it didn't work so well, it still jumped.

I will attach some photos.

I may have to to another piece machined.

Another possible option if u have a welder at your disposal, build the damaged area up with weld, and file/machine to shape.

This is usually my recourse as I am cheap and like to weld and grind things

Nice find. Parts for a tool that age would have to be salvaged from another ratchet. I think the 44 indicate that was made in 1944. It would be a miracle to find a rebuild kit for one, but I’m sure they are out there somewhere.

I’m curious what the other numbers represent, and why one it crossed out like that.

Scan it, print it and send it off for someone to make. That would be cool to watch the entire process.

Thanks for the replies. My first thought was to weld and grind. I got to looking at it and thought to just flip it over. It should have worked. It was jumping teeth while loosening. It was still jumping teeth after flipping. Maybe I have a little problem with the center teeth/hub.

I do have an uncle that knows his way around a lathe and milling machine. I'll bring it to him the next time I go to WISC.

I can afford to take my time.......I have another ratchet that can handle any job, it is a snap on 1.5". It has to weigh every bit of 35 pounds.

Neat ratchet. I'm a bit surprised that it didn't work when you switched the pawl around. Too bad. I recently found a couple of 1in drive drive plugs for the big bertha Proto/Plomb ratchet on eBay, so that stuff is out there somewhere. Probably welding it will be your best bet.

Looks to me like some kind of department, unit designation, or inventory number for a factory setting. The old number would have been crudely X'd out and the new number applied when the tool was reassigned. That's my guess anyway.

I love that old Wright, I found a 1946 3/4 drive at the scrapper that works like a charm once it was cleaned and lubed.

Did you try calling wright tool? You never know, they may have that piece available.

Snap On L-78 1.5" Drive Pic

I was able to find a couple of pictures on the Snap On L-78 1.5" drive ratchet. She is a beast. Enjoy. How much do you think it is worth? I believe it is NOS. I sand blasted it, it had a light surface rust. Its painted black now.

Dave S, this is a monster! Never saw ratchet this size. Please post picture of the whole thing with something for size reference.
Not sure how much it is worth: probably at least couple of hundred for the right person. I wonder what was it used for...

Dang, why don't you try flipping the pawl over? Both the top and the bottom look the same in the pic, and I'll bet the ball and spring won't be affected by the worn tip.
Worst case I'd do as someone else said and just get some bar stack and grind/file a replacement pawl.

bonneyman, I did try flipping it over, that was the first thing I did. The ball / switch was a little difficult to move because it is shaped a little differently. To the eye, it looks like the mirror image......like I said there may be a little damage inside some of the teeth. When I get back to the States I will leave the cover off and put to work and watch what it does. I will also take some more pics of the big ratchet. I'm in West Africa at the moment.

I'll let everyone know what I find out.

Value of Big Ratchet........ I was thinking that she should probably be worth around $500. easily. I had some wheel lugs on a large tele-handler that I needed to get off, I tried a 3/4 impact, I then tried a 1" impact (with a 3/4"air line), I then grabbed the Big Ratchet. I had to have a guy hold the ratchet, extension and the socket in place while I put an eight foot cheater pipe on the handle.......I had to put all 240lbs into it.....CRACK !! Worked like a charm.
