Craigslist alert popped up for metal shop cabinets Friday afternoon. A machine shop a few miles from work was clearing room for new equipment. They had two 48"x36x22 cabinets, two 36"x36x22 cabinets, and one 24"x36x22 single cabinet. Each has two interior shelves. I can't find a name on them, but they are pretty stout institutional cabs. No tops but pretty solid.

Shop manager was asking $20 for each double cab and $10 for the single. A very reasonable price. I offered $50 for all and he bit. I've sold two for more than I paid for all and will keep and repaint the rest.

About 10 years ago I salvaged three pieces of 3/4" birch plywood from some built-in counters when my office remodeled. Each piece is 8'x24" - the perfect depth for each cab so all I have to do is cut for length. Here's one of the 48" cabs.

ALL: as some of you know I've got a soft spot for metal cabinets and especially rotobins. last night I drove 45 minutes in a dense fog to pick this one up that is about 3 foot tall and 28 inches wide that is full of bins. yep farm fresh and rusty, but as far as i can tell no rusted through spots so it should clean up nicely when i have some time.

Drives, nice looking roto-bin, I've never seen one like that before.
We've definitely had some fog around here lately.

my craigslist haul from this morning

3/4" set- Armstrong and thorsen ratchets, craftsman extensions, proto and no name sockets- $25

three pullers, (dollar bill for size) the two two jaw ones are marked Armstrong bray Chicago, the 3 jaw is a no name- $25

so that giant puller I got a couple weeks ago saved me today. i'm starting the rebuild on the 9" in my f100 and the drums were rusted on. little bit of heat and the puller took em right off.

My marketplace find yesterday: Snap On search string paid off... picked up the package deal mainly for the 20, 21 & 22mm wrenches but the rest was all good too. 19 pc set of long shank torx/screwdriver power bits, snap ring pliers, Blue Point flip sockets and extension and new tool bag $85 for all of it. Threw in a Lisle hood prop for $5.b915657a1faaa85800b61e69438eb402.jpg

I had some special finds at my Thursday flea market this morning!

I haven't precisely dated the New Britain drill bit display cabinet yet, but I am strongly hunching on the 40's. I plan to do some crowin' about this piece on the New Britain thread. If you want to see additional photos, check there later tonight.

The tools (See Pic 2) include a couple "-D-I-" sockets, a Williams carbon steel Superior 27C DOE wrench, Champion DeArment "CHANNELOCK" brand water pump pliers, and a long 3/8-inch drive cad-plated Long C Craftsman BE extension, all WWII.

The bigger DBE is a Pebble Fields Proto LA 11/16 x 7/8.

The things to the right of the tools (in Pic 1) were pulled out of the top of a wooden Gerstner machinists' chest. The chest was full of calipers, gages, pen vises, and tooling, and a whole mess of employee personalia (shift change orders, hand receipts, tool room passes, a gate pass, etc, all marked Wright Aeronautical Corporation) all bearing the same name, including 1947, 1948, and 1949 Wright Aeronautical Corporation AGREEMENT handbooks. If you didn't already know it, they had a huge plant in North Jersey. The chest was falling apart, and I didn't want the tooling or tools or the personalia (it's cool to look it, from a historical perspective, but a little too creepy when it's so pervasive), but took the 1947 employee handbook, three nifty machinists' "aids" dated 1935, 1939, and unknown, and a folding loupe. There were more aids, and a pocket machinists' guide, but the price she gave me for everything was twice what I wanted to spend, so I cut the stuff in half. I will post close-ups somewhere.

Let me be the first to say awesome find on the NB piece.

Emeraldcoupe that was a sweet haul, especially if it already paid off. My Proto puller has come in handle many times on rotors and even drums.

It looks like the Channellocks have the 1933 Canadian patent. Nice find. Are the handles smooth or do they have the Channellock pattern?
Thanks, Don. They do indeed have the PAT. IN CAN. 1933 notice, and directly underneath that they have the U.S. PAT. 1950362 (granted March 6, 1934) marking. Hence, as you already know, WWII. Smooth grips. Only the third pair I have found in the wild.

Funny story, too. I was looking through a box at the front of a very jumbled and diverse 'everything's a dollar' table, and I started walking away when I heard the guy sitting on his tailgate say, "There's more tools back here!" - which is where they were! :)

Drove an hour early this morning to a estate tool sale. Great pics; large Snap-on & Kennedy tool boxes. Get in the garage and the Snap-on box with all the tools is gone! Estate guy says family decided to take it at the last minute......OK, but a quick note in the posting on estate sales.net would have been really nice - but that would've negatively affected his traffic. Managed to pick up some SK Torx screwdrivers and a small metric spline socket set. Along with a few ratchets; Snap-on with an extension, Stanley and a SK 1/4dr (soaking in some trans fluid right now). Also a few SK metric sockets, one Mac socket, Craftsman Saltus wrench and a 12mm ratcheting wrench to fill a missing spot in my toolbox!

Hit an estate sale and then followed it up with a trip to the Restore (swung by a used tool place, but found it was no longer. Sad to see.) Between the two, here is what I picked up.

From the ES, a grinder dresser, P&C socket case, oiler, a weird hand vise and a 1 1/8 P&C wrench. $8.50. From the Restore; Sockets, the 1/4 being P&C and Williams; the 3/8's a half dozen Snap-on FV (I had the missing two at home) and a couple Williams. The 1/2 in the back are Hinsdale and Craftsman BE. Also a Starrett drive pin punch, a bar the perfect size for a Tommy Bar and a Millers Falls plumb bob. $9.50.

That p&c socket box and wrench look homesick and would be more happy up north, cough cough. Nice grabs !

It is cool, isn't it! There was about six or so of them, but someone still tried to grab it from me. The guy repaired fishing reels so it might have something to do with that.

That could be arranged Smoke! It's a P&C 100 box if that is something you are interested in. I think it is for a 3/8 set. I will get some more pics of it in the P&C thread later.

Saw a CL post earlier in the week for a Craftsman roller for $50 and "a shed full of other tools", but I couldn't get there until today. A young lady was trying to clean up the property of her deceased mother. The roller was long gone but I was welcome to poke around the dark shed. Mostly junk, but I managed to find the following for $40. A little more than I wanted to spend, but I think she needed it more than I did.

Five bakery dollies - dirty but in good shape, a working 1940's GE Vortalex that I need to straighten a blade on, some =v= and VV CM wrenches, a no-name USA seal driver kit, Makita 3x18 belt sander - dirty but runs fine, and a roached out tool tote free for carrying the rest back to my truck. The dollies are just what I needed to help paint the cabinets I picked up last Friday.

Thanks Lugz. He loves to hang out in the shop, but he's going to hate me when I have to replace his old couch with my new cabs.

FYI that fan is worth more than $40! You **** for that haul. You did just fine at that price and you also helped someone out. The seal driver set is lisle I believe!

That sounds [emoji106] I am sure we can work something out as I need that wrench size and I have no socket boxes except a flying lady box. Believe it or not I have no plvmb, Proto LA or p&c.

Yeah Smoke, I quickly learned that. Doing a little research, I found some selling for a couple hundred bucks. Mine has a little surface rust on the original paint, but mechanically is in great shape. These things are precision machines with an oil cup/wick for the main shaft etc., and designed to run continuously. But I guess they'd have to be if they were your only source of cooling down. Judging by the prices in some of the old catalogs these were not things people bought on a whim without consideration.

I've crossed over into the "crazy" category. Waited 2 hours this morning before the sun came up, in 40s temperatures and rain, to get access to these things. Also looked at some cast iron there, but didn't buy any; saw one guy who got a $75-100 cast iron skillet.:shocking:

Instead, I picked up these items at an estate sale today:

Simondsen GI hiproof (cantilever) tool box, probably Vietnam era, Millers Falls combination square, 123 batteries and an Unbrako 5/16 allen wrench. This is the first time I've seen Unbrako with the oval as part of the brand name.

There was another identical Simondsen box, but the latches were in rough shape and it was a little more rusty, so decided to save my money.

Nice find on the Simonsen box. Looks in good shape. We were finally able to hit a couple of sales. We tried to go to one pretty close to home but the line was long and moved very slowly so we gave it up. We went to a sale in Walnut Creek, CA followed by one in Pleasant Hill. The first sale had PowrKraft and Vlchek combo wrenches that cleaned up well. The second sale had a Crescent hacksaw, a Stanley eggbeater with all the bits, a Heller body file and an S-K extension.

Nice grab on that Crescent hacksaw! I recently found one and I'm in love with how it feels in hand. They aren't very common, either.

Snuck out to one estate sale this AM.

Pliers are Utica, Needle nose are Xcelite of all things! Hose nozzle is Dunlap, (still not a single duplicate!), The Flash bulbs are for SWMBO and her camera collection, The lighted magnifier was a slight gamble at a buck, as it had a leaking battery at the cap end, but a quick soak inb Vinegar, some SOS to brighten the brass again (vinegar makes it look copper) and some drying time and its fine!

So I have an oddball question for the group:

Anyone ever seen or have a 1-9/16, or 40MM open end spanner wrench?

I have an orphan fire extinguisher I'm re-purposing and it has that size "cap" nut so needs a spanner that isn't a 15" Crescent... It can be one of those shorter, thinner single end jobs and would work.

I visited an estate sale yesterday that came up in my normal CL vise search the night before. I recognized the vise in the pic as an Athol so I decided to brave the crowd and ended up waiting in line behind about 60 people for the sale to open. ffe055f875fd7be06ee3a03f032e29a1.jpgWhen I was able to make it to the garage no one had claimed it yet and for the $45 asking price, I couldn't leave it behind. Been collecting and restoring vises for awhile now but this Athol 624 1/2 is my first vise acquisition from an estate or garage sale!55f9c6b522f98a5b6c9bc053d67937d5.jpg83c743692e1845fd7ce2bc8b410d9f75.jpg

Outlaw, someone should start a betting pool on how many more hose nozzles you will buy before getting a duplicate. :spit:
