Rainbow Ranger got caught in some pretty major rainstorms and surface rust building to point of it will start to cost much more if I don’t do something about it. Zillions of things to do but too nice of truck to ignore.

Ordered some SPI epoxy primer in black
Should be here Friday.

I have been wondering when you were going to paint that since you built it. It would have been in that shape in a few hours here in MS.

Hi gents,

I've got the truck that will be the recipient of Randy's 2.7Eco plant. Should be a informative and exhausting few days as Randy helps me lift the cab on this 2001 and we remove the 5.4/4R70W and transplant in the 2.7/6R80. I'm sure we'll have a picture or two to post from the process.

I have been wondering when you were going to paint that since you built it. It would have been in that shape in a few hours here in MS.

This truck is not Eco1 (f250) but a F100 Ranger I bought 1 1/2 yrs ago. Stock 352.
It gets its name from prior owners idea of a “paint job” funny for a bit but got old in a hurry. Tried removing the brushed and rolled in stripes and got carried away. Quit when I found major surprises underneath the ugly paint. Started as a scuff n paint but like most turned into major job.

Refresher on what Rainbow looked like! I just could not handle the
Slime green paint with purple pink and yuck stripes.
Plan was to remove stripes only and just drive it.
I thought I could just scuff it and do a cheap paint job
But once I started simply could not do it.

I uploaded the video in a lighthearted joke. Kinda devastated about now.

2.7 Swap Day 1:
Pulled cab, removed 5.4 and got the 2.7 in place. By moving the trans crossmember back a few inches in existing holes the transmission/ engine location was in perfect location. We also had engine mounts figured out with just a few changes to factory mounts.

Of course my 31 yr old welder quit & we ran out of juice for the acetylene oxy torch. Early next morning we ran to get new liner for MiG and to fill tanks.

All was well or so we thought.

Once we knew what to do for mounts we pulled engine back out to replace a cracked plastic oil pan. When we removed pan a large crack was found in “Block Stiffener “ support. A totally off the wall piece to keep things from moving around. I am not aware of any other engine built that has one.

At that time owner decided to just put truck back together and head home to California.
(Aluminum piece needed was a few days out in Detroit) so we reversed all and put the 5.4 back in and drove truck out early evening. Just call the video “click bait”


We also had h-pipe/cats in with no mods, we test fit the intercooler and pipes which all fit, found that a Ford Transit power steering pump could be fitted with plenty of room and good belt routing.

Looked like a pretty straight forward install. Devastating news for me.

Now I have to try to regroup and make a attempt to finish 427 truck for GoodGuys. Deadline November 15th.

Sorry to hear it didn't go well. I guess Randy's 1 day EcoBoost shop isn't ready to open yet. I guess I should have figured it was too good to be true, but I wouldn't put it past you based on eco 1 and 2.

I've never seen anything like that block stiffener... It's like a girdle went nuts

Yeah, Total bummer by end of first day things were going well.

I am sure by end of today or about now we would have had engine all mounted with cab back on but things don't always go as planned.

I did order the new Stiffener (what Ford calls it) but that's for another rainy day like about all other projects around here.

Still plugging away at 427 truck trying to make progress.

Another day lost today because of yet another Major allergic reaction.

The very long hours for a few days and no more than 4 hrs sleep per night my feet were killin' me so I put some heat lotion on my feet to see if it would help me sleep. Middle of the night (Monday) they awoke me with hundreds of bubbles all over my feet. A allergic reaction from the heat lotion. They continued to get worse today but appears over the hump now. Pretty much stopped me for today. Tinkering now but not much getting done. Just what I needed about now . .

Also do not have use of my left index finger because of something similar. Its been having a non-healing reaction for prob 11 months now.

My 1950's Hot Rod Mag background just shudders when I see complete body removal for an engine swap.

I get it.
But it just seems so much too much.

Considering it’s only 3 hrs to pull cab it’s not only a bunch easier
But a bunch faster too.

6 total bolts hold the cab on.
If we were to do it again thinking closer to 2 hrs.

3 hrs and the core support bolts we had to fight for prob 20 minutes.

Cab with fenders, hood,grille, core support, inner fenders
And all attached to it stay with cab in one unit.

Not only that but access to exhaust, driveshaft and so much more
Removed in minutes from the top side.

I imagine cab removal saves 12 hrs time at minimum.

I surely would not want to lay underneath to make Engine or trans mounts
Or to have to fit custom exhaust and so much more.

I simply would not be able to crawl under and back out as many times as would be needed to complete the job

Since it’s been a good 10 yrs that I have done any paint work for myself
I decided to spend at least 6 months trying to get caught up on all that needs paint.

Paint supplies tho have now gone well past expensive.
Primer I have been using now over 400.00 for a gallon
(Time to switch after I finish 427truck)

Good thing I already have paint for Eco2!
(I did use Eco2 primer on 427 truck tho)

On another note I had PPG store use it’s spec camera to get
An exact match on original paint! It was truly a color I never expected.

It’s around 600.00 per gallon for paint so will just use the SPI epoxy once 427 truck done.

2015 2.7 EcoBoost.
Replacement of Engine Stiffener which was cracked. A quite complex deal.

I had a couple days waiting on primer to setup so decided to see if any further damage as buyer backed out.
Now I know it’s all good I will be put on shelf ready for the 1966 F100 4x4 if unable to sell as running package.

Monday will get back on 427 truck. Update on its status in a bit.

New DeVilbiss primer gun a absolute life changer spraying heavy primers. Out of box settings first time use and primer went on like glass.

Finished blocking last coats now hoping this is final prime.

Anyway, I sure would hate to have to do a timing tensioner replacement on that thing while it was in the vehicle. The DOHC 4.6 is bad enough!

Cracked Cap or Fracture Splitting technology on both block mains & connecting rods. Even if one takes a zoomed in high quality photo it cannot be seen easily.

I have set of new rods in boxes. Will post pics.

If more than a few hr job I would just remove cab. Tensioner a bit complicated especially if one is not familiar of sequence. Procedure.





Here is a new Rod for a 2018 3.5 Raptor engine. They cost 11.00 each. The steel crankshaft good for 1000hp cost me a bit over 100.00 new from Ford. Compare that to the 429/460 crank I have at 3500.00.

That’s why I like the eco engines so much. Very cheap to fix if need be make great power and go a long time if you keep good care of them. Mostly oil changes by 5000 mi with good oil.
