Greetings All,

While picking up a few open stock Dewalt combination wrenches on Amazon the other day, i noticed some changes in their design when they arrived.

First off, i got 21, 22, 24, and 27 mm wrenches.

First change is that the anti slip open end has been replaced with a regular open end. This isn't a new change but, has shown up in sets purchased over the last year.

The second change is that the 24 mm wrench looks as if it from a completely different series of wrenches. :wtf:

First off, it's shorter than the 22 mm wrench pictured with it below. The 22 measures approximately 12.5 inches long overall. However, the 24 mm only measures roughly 11 inches overall. It's more of a standard length wrench then a long pattern version. Gone are the knurled rectangles on each side of the wrench beam, the size marking is slightly smaller, and the base of the open end is slightly wider. The 24 mm part number is DWMT79119 which is the current part number found on the Dewalt web site. I believe this to be a model change as other Dewalt full polished metric combination wrenches ran part numbers DWMT75xxx. :dunno:

I've recommended these wrenches more than once to people looking for a good set of wrenches without braking the bank. However, I don't think i can do that any more if they're switching to a new pattern but, that's just me.

So don't be surprised if you order an open stock wrench and something different from what you have or were expecting. :beer:

Not all is doom and gloom though, i snagged the 27 mm wrench for less than $8 as an add on item. :lol:

Thank you for the review. I like the DeWalt hand tools. Shame on the current production.

Matco is the same way. They change their wrenches every 5 years so that when you do a warranty swap, you've got a new ugly duckling that doesn't match the rest of the set.

Might be the angle or something but the new wrench looks lobster claw-ish next to the old one

I think there is a good chance that the Craftsman wrenches that SBD will release will fill the gap between Dewalt and Proto.

If the Dewalt is long pattern, ASD, nicer markings, etc then why pay more money.

SBD has the GM/Ford thing going on.
MAC= Cadillac/Jaguar
Proto= Buick/Lincoln
Dewalt Wrenches?? Maybe Pontiac/Mercury? Get 'em while they last!
CM = Chevy/Ford
Stanley=Opel - it's the European way of saying "junk"

The craftsman long patterns that I saw at Lowe's looked just like the dewalts with the ASD design. Made in Taiwan too. Assuming same wrench, different stamp.

I bet SBD will be using that design for the craftsman brand now, and will bump the price up a bit on them, and the dewalt wrenches will be plain parallel jaw design at their current price point.

I see the dewalt 18pc set part numbers include the DWMT79119 24mm... The 7-19 wrenches are all Dwmt72xx and have/had the ASD. The 20-23mm are Dwmt75xx. Obviously those larger wrenches are from a different line, and/or more current design.

Kind of bull if a one package set will include wrenches that vary in design.... Who knows what's going on.
