Outlaw: yep i'm not close to the little ratchet at the moment and while it is at my shop my big magnets are here at home so hopefully i'll wipe it off and get a better look soon.

it's sure a nice feeling and looking little tool though.

Tin- that’s awesome to have those. Congrats. Now we know what that trip was about.

It’s certainly been a good picking year.

This was one of my better days at the market. There were several new vendors and both were selling tools dirt cheap. Several regular and occasional vendors were also feeling the holiday cheer. This may be my last big haul of the year. Many things were going for under a dollar this time, even a handfull for a dollar, which rarely happens anywhere. I’ll post the hand tools later.


A couple things for now. Picked up these two Craftsman rotary tools, $11 for both. I had to throw away the pile of sandpaper bands because they’d gotten wet, but there are 5 containers of cutting and sanding discs. One came with the flex shaft as well.

After spending a few bucks at one of my favorite regular vendors, I noticed the 48” aluminum Ridgid and asked about it. He always answers a price inquiry with “For you...”, so he said “For you...40 dollars.”. I thought to myself Aww man, why did he have to go so low. He’s making me buy this.

I looked it over and concluded it just needs some rust cleaned off. There’s one use for the dremel already.

Drives: IMPERIAL BRASS is the name of a Mfgr. They did make early brass fixtures and stuff, giving them their name, but moved onto tools, most famously swaging and flaring kits for the refrigeration, pump, and auto industries. Edit: Later merged with Eastman. Search ratchet thread. We've talked about these before. OEM may be Walden. Or maybe Bonney. Don or Unaiu may know more.

I wonder how much stuff has been found for the entire year between us all....

I didn't do a total tally, which would be crazy even for me, but I did do some tallies when I was doing research for the awards and the POY candidates. I'll touch on some of that in the Re-Cap on NYE.

That pipe wrench resembles the one I showed in post 8056 except yours is twice as long. That seems fair though because mine cost half as much. Here is mine cleaned up. The 24” ones are close to $100.00 retail so I would say that we both got great deals!

Drives, they are 3/4 plywood and very carefully.

I did the careful shuffle with 4 of them in the car at one time so I can only image moving those all at the same time! Seriously nice job on finding those all at once ! Would you care to share the background story on finding them ?

I would say so Don, 20 was a nice price for the 24.

When I was a teenager and first starting going to estate sales I dragged my dad to a few sales. At one they had few tools, but there was a steel 48” Ridgid left. The estate company owner admitted to me the wrench was his, that he bought it used to do one job, and had brought it there to sell. That’s my firsthand account of padding estate sales, something that was often discussed amongst the estate sale crowd.

Anyway, I don’t remember the marked price, but we got into negotiations and I believe I took it home for $35. My dad and I went straight to my uncle’s house for a visit, and I brought the wrench in his kitchen to show him. I think they thought I was nuts. Neither of them tool guys.

My other funny Ridgid story was an auction in an unheated construction company warehouse in the middle of winter. All Ridgid items came up for bid. When they got to the nice aluminum, 24 or 36, i don’t remember, it turned out my supervisor from work and I were bidding against each other. I was up front in the crowd and he was way in the back of the crowd and won. We didn’t know we were bidding against one another.i wouldn’t have drove the price up had I known, he was a friend..

ALL: I picked this little ratchet up a while back and it fell to the bottom of the bucket so as i'm getting organized it appeared. i think it's brass and not sure about much else about it. I like it and wondering if it i need to shine it up or just keep it with original dirty patina?

I struck out on estate/garage sales this weekend but scored these late yesterday off CL to make it a very nice weekend for me. I love the old Craftsman red & gray toolboxes. The top box also came with the original Craftsman Crown logo'd key. I recently picked up a 3-drawer rolling cabinet that also had one of these original keys. The toolbox and cabinet are in really good working condition. The wheels (not sure why a link is created when I try to use the word casters?) are non-Craftsman/Waterloo replacement though. The top box was made 03-76 and the bottom cabinet 10-75.

I think Walden made them for a lot of suppliers. Here is a brand I don't recognize next to it's Walden counterpart and a NOS Walden I found on eBay recently.

Flea finds. I may have gone a little overboard. Like I said there were too many hard to resist deals.

Some Xcelite, a couple Klein pieces, Snappy nut driver, two 1/8” Craftsman amber handle screwdrivers. Mayhew pry bar. 3 nice quality Zebra screwdrivers made in Germany. Ridgid stubby,couple Husky Pro. Tuck, Mac,and other wood handle drivers. Chisels from Stanley, Pexto, and two others yet to be id’d. Irwin Bell system driver, Matco pick and driver, Utica pliers, Snap On punches and driver, Blue Point hone.

Edit: left out the Starrett pin vise.

If you are really worried about rust, get some oil wipes. Most gun care companies have some, I use the Hoppes brand. Also, desiccant can be used to absorb moisture.

Of course, if you actually use your tools, they tend not to get too rusty.

Been looking for a replacement wheelbarrow for about a month as the old one which we've owned for probably 30 years broke a handle. Those oak handles and wedges are about $40 plus I'd want to replace the old hardware as it's rusted as you could imagine. Figured it was more cost efficient to buy a decent used one. Easier said than done around here this time of year I guess. Anyway, saw this one across town and made arrangements to go have a look. It's in great shape and should last the rest of me and the little woman's life.

The guy was loading up a bunch of junk into two pickups so I asked what else he had letting him know I was interested in hand tools, vises, toolboxes and woodworking. He says, "would you be interested in a wood rack?" Pause. "Free." He goes and pulls out a brand new, still in the box Portamate wood rack and says "It got wet in my truck about 2 weeks ago but I doubt it's rusted too bad." I only looked at these twice in my Woodcraft December flyer over the weekend as the one in my shop is loaded and Woodcraft has them on sale this month for $49.99. Also, throws in that box of 1/4" router bits for free. Real nice young man.

Pic is of the Portamate wood rack in my shop. Wood on the floor of the 2nd car garage will now find a home and free up some floor space. It's nice to be in the right place at the right time.

I’ve been using USPS Priority Mail, which has tracking and insurance options. Across-country is generally best in Flat Rate mailers. If it’s just a couple states away, Regional Rate is often a better deal, but requires navigating the frustratingly bizantine and counterintuitive USPS website to pay shipping and print labels. Since most of what we ship is heavy, minimizing the dimensions is the way to control cost. Sockets are probably the easiest thing to jam into a pouch or box, but whatever size mailer you need (dictated by the largest item), you’d want it full to get the best cost-to-benefit.

no sales today. I'm off. so, I grab one of my crates of old rusty stuff I have laying around. I had forgotten what all I had put in it to work on / clean up later. but, here we go. I found a bunch of old rusty wrenches in the bottom and started with those. With rust flyin I actually got a few surprises!

Speedster:
WAs super rusty, couldn't see any kind of marking on it. but after clean up Walden Wor. Appeared. the part number is there but very faint will need a mag glass to get it.

T handle:
I think is Older Snap-On

C Clamp:
Willilams 20" Vulcan given to me by my dads got rod buddy. HUGE HEAVY Clamp cleaned up good!

Harolds:
Pliers, Parrot head pliers, and an adjustable. the handles on the parrots are neat as they have an H on them!

Just because it is Christmas, I thought I would return to the favorite topic of this year's Garage Sale Thread!

I found this Jerry Can in a barn on my wife's family farm. It has the following stamping within an oval on the bottom:

ICC-5
Wheeling
20 5-1/4 42

One side is marked: G USA
The other side is marked: G QMC

I assume that it is an ICC-rated container made by Wheeling from 20 gauge material. It holds 51/4 gallons of gasoline, and was made in 1942. It was intended to hold gasoline, and was property of the Quartermaster Corps of the US Army.
