My first post on Garage Journal of my first vintage vise, a well used Athol 615 that I'm going to restore. Anyone have experience with the 615's?

JHoff
Welcome to GJ. Like Chris said Athols are great and very well build vises. I particularly love their dynamic jaws support shelf which even compared to other top brands is much heftier and hence less prone to breaking (unlike some other brands)

Personally, I have never heard of Triumph vises and there is no listing of any in the vise spread sheet either. Do you have any 411 on this brand (apart from the fact that apparently it is from Germany)?

PS
It does not look like it is going to sell at the staring bid asking price of $285.00. I am wondering if seller is over optimistic :)

So I’ve only done two restorations since I started collecting last February but this is the vise I chose for the second one. It was a Ridge Tool Company 61CP that I had gotten for $100. The vise has 6” jaws and weighs in at 156 lbs. The vise had been sitting outside for years and was firmly rusted shut in the closed position. It took four and a half hours of gentle tapping from both sides just to get it apart without breaking it.

That last picture is my triumph vise. They are actually pretty well made and are a backwards opening vise and ride on square rail if I remember correctly. What gives away the German connection is that they are marked drgm which has to do with patents in Germany and quality standards. The vise uses a outside front clip garter like the Wilton’s Parker’s and yorks. I could get more pictures of the vise as far as jaw width opening and weight if any one is interested.

Finally got my 8.5" Parker 600. First heard about it in July. Closed deal a few months later, and it finally arrived from Montana today. Shipped via Fastenal. Anyone know what color this would have been when new?

I had posted in another thread a while back about a good vise to bolt to a toolbox. Well, I found the perfect vise and this is it. It is a Wilton SBV-100. The perfect size in my opinion for a toolbox. Small enough so it doesn't get in the way but big enough to hold most things you would work on at your toolbox.

I made a custom base because the base it comes with I was not happy with the design.

I also increased the jaw capacity slightly with a little machining. I made a video on how I did that.

Here’s my recently purchased Record No1 English vice.
I spent a long time cleaning it up,I used a chisel to remove weld splatters and paint.
Then I sprayed it with WD40 cleaned some more then oiled it with 3 in 1 oil.
I couldn’t straighten the handle but it works fine and spins fast with one finger.

It’s going outdoors on the outdoor bench i cobbled up from the bits left from my industrial racking.
I prefer to do dirty jobs outside away from my motorbike.

In comparison next to my Paramo No1.

Thank you for the very interesting information and even from the photos like you said, they appear to be well made and good vises.

Anybody familiar with this Columbian vise ? It's just.. different.
Cant enlarge the pics to see a model number clearly . Looks like an exposed screw model.
Price is reasonable.

Congrats on finding a unicorn

As for the color, well Smitty's comment "Green as in envy" might not be too far off the mark, according to my notes Parkers were either greenish-gray or black color.

My oh my. I just spent way too much time running through this thread. I have 2 decent milling vises and one crummy bench vise, which isn't even set up right now (garage reorganization). I see a beefy Wilton bullet vise in my future. Thanks to everyone for posting the more unusual vises - those are all pretty cool to see.

By the fact that you have made it to this thread and looking in my crystal vise ball I see in your future a workbench heavily laden with vises and a wallet light on cash, welcome to GJ and vise world :bounce:

I was going through my boxes of catalogs and found this brochure. Appears to be from 1950.a6a993a5a3f166dcf125cd409d69bfe9.jpgc0f76d86a6bb6fc75b0eb0458479c432.jpg43a36de7cc14d29064439572c32d8096.jpg385022ff5481db9507d0b34814aea581.jpg478fbcba7e4a555586e154ca7f17c673.jpg

Here’s the finished product from my Simplex 61CP restoration. It took 21 hours from start to finish.201983c2f969119551ea9a6fc06c724a.jpg06b635abf7b85ed23f05502da2bb02c0.jpgb2fc2cf03cce7980d34b1c294743c53d.jpga8e3abe14ae70d80f679d17648a4a7a8.jpg

Good eye, Yost also sells the same vise under their name. So Wilton, Yost, and York rebrand the same vise as theirs, When I was looking at this vise the cheapest version I found was the Wilton brand which is why I went with Wilton.

Pretty sure it's actually made by york

Two things:

  1. The screw has been replaced (probably non Wilton)
  2. and you should never post a live CL link for something not yet in your hands. -Lots of lurkers will try to scoop you on the item...
