Exciting time ahead Brent. Great job and keep up the great work. Looks like there is another website I want to follow. Can't wait to see it when it is up and running.

Thanks, Mike. Actually, I was going to PM you because I'm going to do lfeatures on craftsmen and businesses and such and I think you may have a thing or two we could share. Simple stuff, nothing that's invade your privacy or anything.

Let me know if that sounds kosher.

Cool! Yeah, it's exciting, for sure. There's so much for me to learn. I wanted to jump out of the gate writing and shooting pics and such but there's a LOT to do on the web side of things.

COOL!!!

Hurry up and get it going!!

Mmmmmmm.......tools!

I'm hurrying! I'm putting the same amount of time/energy that I put into the garage. I think I have some good ideas. I hope so, anyway.

I may head down to AZ to do a feature. Maybe you and I could hook up on something, too? I think we could figure out something neat to showcase around your place.

Can we get first dibs on the Tools365 shirts ?

For sure!

Tools365.net will be another site to watch.
Good Tools is more than half the job, looking forward to see what you will make of it.

Thanks so much. I appreciate it. It's been stressing me out but it's shaping up.

Thanks, Derek! I have a lot to do to get content loaded. But once it's populated with all my own stuff it should be easier to go from there.

Happy new year, folks!

I figure I should do an update since it's been about a year of silence. A lot has changed. I'll bullet-point it:

* I wised up and lost nearly 60 pounds. I did put some back since late fall but I've been back on a downward trajectory, recently. I took a dna analysis and found out information that snapped me into reality. Plus, I hated feeling gross most days.

* The house was the main project focus this year... roof, windows, restoring the wood sills, gable siding, the entryway needed repair, and paint. The garage got painted to match, too, AND I got a gutter along the roof where I walk to the back door at the same time we got some for the house.

*The hot rod started becoming a focus, too. The family and I brought the body out to a pal in Vallejo, toward the end of the summer, he'll be starting it soon to get the metalwork finished.

*I've done some more work on the garage, too, mostly little stuff. I did put in an opener and as mentioned a gutter and paint.

*My department was cut, where I worked and so at the end of the summer, I lost my employment.

*During that time my 90k mile Tundra decided it no longer wanted to live. Haha. That was a curveball. Things were pretty crazy for me, at that time, so I didn't get all that bothered. It sucked and was going to be a huge expense so I posted it for sale. The dealer took a look at it and all I could connect the failure to was maybe the service I had done to it prior to leaving for Cali. I think they may have run the wrong oil in it but that's speculation.

*The Tundra sold fairly fast and I picked up a little 2wd Tacoma, which got hit 30 minutes after leaving the dealership - right in the cab corner. It was in and out of the bodyshop since then and I've just gotten it back. I drove it once since I got it back and got it stuck at the end of my driveway this AM. Haha! My son has never been stuck and was confused on how this could happen. I was just like, welcome to the old days, son!

*The Taco getting hit was a turning point for me. I believe that negative thoughts do attract negative results and I was struggling with trying to figure out exactly who I am and what I want to do for employment. I wasn't even driving the truck when it got hit and I lost my cool on the gentleman who hit the truck. It was like an out-of-body experience watching me interact with that guy. He was so visibly shaken that I felt shame/embarrassment. I grew up in that moment. What's crazy is, I'm a pretty level-headed person. I may be thinking about tearing someone's head off but 99.9% of the time, my brain is in control of my emotions. From that moment, I dug back into being positive and developing myself. No job (or lack thereof), blown-up truck, stockmarket shift (seriously, lost major $$$ there), accident, dealing with an autobody shop for two months, and so on will shake me.

*Tools365.net is actually a thing, now. I've failed and learned so much over the year. For a while I gave up on it. However, after losing my job and getting back into writing, things have been steadily improving. I have a lot of content coming. It's a ton of work for one person and I have a love-hate relationship with the back-ends of websites. Really, I just hate not knowing how to do something.

*This year has been a lot of not knowing how to do things... many things... this year.

*We bought a rental property and have another in process.

*My wife and I are closer than ever. I have a renewed appreciation for our relationship.

*I missed the GJ and my pals on here.

I'll post some shop updates, soon. There's not a ton but, believe it or not, I still have a few unfinished items that were on my original list, which need to be completed. So, I'll get to those, as well.

To those who've reached out while the thread sat dormant, thanks. It's always nice to hear people are thinking about you.

All right, all right, that's all I can think of, for now.

Glad to be back!

WOW Brent! Sounds like you've had hell of a year.

I wish I could control my emotions better as well. My wife tells me I have a short fuse and it is always half lit. I have to force myself to be positive as negativity seems to grab ahold of me much easier so I can really appreciate where you are coming from.

I hope things turn around for you and glad to see you back on the forum my friend, we've missed ya.

Holy cow, what a ride. But it sounds like it was just the kick in the pants you needed. Way to stay positive.

Wow Brent, helluva year. Glad to see you back. I have been thinking about you.

What, no concrete? :wtf:

:lol_hitti I figured there wasn't any left! I mean, it's been a year, you've probably installed a runway, parking garage, a pool or too and maybe, for giggles, a little bird bath.

I hope you're well, my friend!

You know what? The good news is, how we handle life is all our control. I look at 2018 and I don't think it's been bad. I'm glad to be out of that job, actually. It was nearly 10 years on the nose and guess what, my boss called me the wrong name when he let me go! I looked at that like, I'd done myself a pretty big disservice. I'm better than being mistaken or forgotten.

Holy cow, what a ride. But it sounds like it was just the kick in the pants you needed. Way to stay positive.

Truly! Things are looking up. I read over 20 personal development books in 18 and not one of them mentioned feeling sorry for yourself. :lol_hitti Just keep moving forward and getting better.

I feel like I came out of that year with a lot of valuable knowledge about myself. I relied on this saying I heard a long time ago and would relay to my students when I taught, "You know what you get when you don't get what you want? Experience."

I hope you're all well and making neat things like I know you all are. I've been out of the loop, what's up with you guys?

So, are you staying self-employed with the rental properties, or are you looking for a new gig?

How far are you from Clearfield?

You know, I'm not sure. I am looking. I'm being picky. I don't want to get back into a place with terrible culture and micromanagement.

I've been studying and working on eCommerce. It's been a lot of work. In the long game, I want to be making money while I sleep rather than trade time for money.

However, I love helping people 1:1 so I keep looking for a company to work with and do my thing on the side.

I'm not too far from Clearfield. What's going on there???

And, thanks for popping in! I hope all is well with you!

Brent,
Glad to hear you're moving into 2019 with a renewed sense of purpose; congratulations on the self-discovery and the appreciation for what lies ahead!
Best,
PD

Hey PD,

Thank you! Me working on reinventing myself is one of the best things that could have happened to our family. Sure, I get some negativity from folks outside my wife and kids but it doesn't bother me anymore. I know who I am and what I'd like for me and my loved ones.

All the rest of what it takes is simple in theory and hard in practice.

I hope all is well with you, my friend! What projects do you have going on???

Brent, been in a bit of a holding pattern here. Working on getting my in-laws moved to assisted living in AZ; when that finally happens it's going trigger a flurry of related activity...

Brent, first, glad to see you back on the forum! In reading all that has happened it sounded like last year was quite the roller coaster ride. In the end you survived and learned what many of us have to be reminded of many times over the course of our lives that family in the end is most important. I wish you a Happy New year and hope that you and your family have a great 2019!

Man, I need to update this thread!

Here are some of what's happening in the workshop:

I've gone another round of organizing since my project parts were sitting on a table. It was a really disorganized and a waste of floorspace. I went into my storage and took something I already owned and made it work. I'll share that, soon - it's pretty neat.

I cleaned the floor. It hadn't been done since I finished the shop. Those floor scrubbers are awesome. I've got to share that process because not only did my floor come back to the way it was when finished but my shop smelled fresh for a month after, at least.

I found a new item to hang up on the shelf. It's a vintage quarter midget body. That's all I have from the car. I'm too busy, at the moment, with a surprise kitchen remodel... no, I'm not surprising my wife - the surprise was on me.

My compressor died, well not fully, but its on it's way. I was running it at freezing temps (running airlines into the house) and from the house I could hear a racket coming from the garage. I ran out there and saw the air pressure over 200 and the pump is now leaking oil from the seal. It's still holding air pressure but it makes a racket while running. Fix or replace is now where I'm at. I'd love something smaller, quieter, but with lots of volume. That sounds expensive to me.

Tools365 is growing slowly and there's a company wanting to swap out my beloved Craftsman boxes for some custom built units. We're still working on the deal. If they can make my idea happen, that would be a really neat addition to the shop. We'll see.

Projects: everything (except my coupe) has not changed, lately because of this kitchen nightmare. I've go some decent phones of that debacle on my phone. Old houses are fun... terrible contractors are... well... terrible! :lol_hitti

Pics and details soon.

Keep me in the loop on the new boxes. They sound pretty interesting. As I mentioned last we chatted, I'll be leveraging local (and this bulletin board) for knowledge in my new space, whatever that turns out to be.

Hope the kitchen works out well!

Hello Brent, sorry to hear you're having contractor issues. Seems like these days it's more the rule than the exception.

Hope the air compressor is an easy fix.

Glad to see you still kickin' Brent but sorry to hear about the contractors. I thought I was done with having to deal with them when my shop was completed but I find myself in my current job now having to deal with contractors more and more, almost on a daily basis. The fact that I haven't been on the news is a testimony to my self control.:lol_hitti

Any updates? FYI I used your loft area as inspiration for my new shop. Did you use pallet lumber and use a mix of colored pallets, or did you stain them? Sorry, if you already covered this, but I didn’t see it when I went back and read.

I used mostly pallet wood. However, I did use some random reclaimed wood here and there. That's some of the longer pieces that I trimmed out the ends. And there are some other longer pieces that I found when picking through a pile at the same place I got the reclaimed boards.

If you can find a place, like a commercial laundry company or another business that deals with big items, you can find some long pallets. They love giving them away, too, because they're hard to dispose of whole.

I used to keep some tools in my truck so I could cut pallets that I'd find. Out here, there are lots of places that put them out for people to take.

As far as updates on the shop, not too much. I sold my compressor a while ago to replace it with something smaller and quieter and of course, since there was no compressor in the corner... a few boxes of hot rod parts sit in its place. Haha.

In 2020, it's been a gym, mostly. Now the workout space is gone because the hot rod is now a roller and much closer to completion.

The shop (especially the attic) really needs to be gone over and deep cleaned.

Actually, come to think of it, over the summer, I finally painted the shed (which keeps so much stuff out of the garage) to matched.

It's not much but it's one of those things that I should've just included when we had the house & garage painted but we were being cheap and it bothered me since.

Agree it looks much better! Does the shed have a door to access the garage, or is it just the one at the front?

Thanks! It matched the old, 1940's colors of the house but, man, what a clash after the change.

It's just the front door. Actually, I sealed up a window that the shed blocked.
