Unless you're 100 years old, I would expect so!

I've been doing a little light reading. Vintage rolling papers are collectibles, and apparently, the older ones like the one I have with the original stapled string are worth some bucks. Even the ones from fifty years later (fifty years ago) can go for $15 to $30 per! Who knew?!

The only thing I smoke is venison, turkey, and trout - and I don't inhale! :) (Alright, alright, the occasional cigar...)

First Estate Sale of the year! An odd mix of stuff and I got there late (missed the Craftsman block grinder), but I managed to pull together a solid pile.

Got a nice lot of tape measures- Lufkin, Stanley, one Starrett. A long C Craftsman angle measure (I don't know the correct name for it..)

I went a bit overboard on the screwdrivers, but there were lots of USA made ones so in the bag they went. Most were lower end Stanley, but a couple of Snap-On, a couple of MAC, some Xcelite and some well used S-K. One Blackhawk, one Rosco, and a Klein too.

The wrench selection was really picked over but I got some older unmarked ones, a couple of Indestro, Fairmount, S-K and some Williams. Keeping with the 'lots of Stanley' almost all of the nail sets were Stanley. Got a couple of Craftsman punches too.

Hammers from Billings and Eastwing, a Craftsman head, Taiwan hatchet, unmarked axe head. Also picked up an old replacement handle mostly because I like the label on it.

Got a nice pile of oilers- I left behind some really big Eagle ones- priced way too high unfortunately. A set of Armstrong pipe threading dies, some Jiffy Clamps and Hoppes oil. And I got the green metal tin (tobacco?) solely because it was the closest thing I could find to a jerrycan.

And probably because I was late there was not much in the way of sockets/ratchets. But I did get a couple of Craftsman, a 1/4" Oxwall and some random sockets. I did find some H Craftsman and 5 3/8" drive Snap-On sockets. All in rougher shape, but I guess that means I need to get to the next sale earlier :)

Something Crowntop and Madonna.
Crowntop RAS
Good guesses, gents. Outlaw nailed one out of three.

So I was perusing Facebook Marketplace this week and found a half dozen Craftsman radial arm saws under $100 within a 50 mile radius. For those who don't know, Craftsman RAS' 10" and smaller and without factory blade guards are under recall and you can get a hundred bucks for sending in the motor and carriage. They even pay your shipping costs. Anyway, one in particular caught my eye: a bronze era saw sitting on a cabinet WITH the key that activates the on/off switch. I bought a similar RAS last year that I decided to keep, but it was missing the key. The saw on FBMP had a bunch of other stuff (blades, etc), so I figured what the hey.

At the agreed-to time and place, I met an older gent who had the RAS out and set up. It was nice, ran well, and the accessories were impressive.

Craftsman 100 113.29001 RAS with Crowntop base cabinet and wheel kit, with keys for both!
A collection of period literature for Sears/Craftsman items.
Crafty moulding head blade kit, barely used
Crafty Kromedge dado blade kit, barely used
Crafty 9-3230 Hold down Kit, New In Box!
A dozen saw blades, minimally used
Four grinding wheels
All wrapped in 1981 vintage newspapers...it was neat to see some of the old comics.

I agreed to his $75 asking price, and then asked "What else are you trying to move along?"

Him: "Uh, well, I've got an arbor press over there," pointing to the other side of his tractor.

Me: hmmm, I've seen other guys on the GS thread score bench top arbor presses..."Yeah, let's take a look."

This one was a little bit bigger....

Me: "Wow. That's a biggun! What would you want for that?"
Him: " I'd like to see it go to someone who appreciates it. What's it worth to you?"
Me: "Well, I don't really need one that big. How about fifty bucks?"
Him : "Sure!"
Me: :-O

He even helped me load it and the RAS with his front end loader. As he was picking up the RAS, I glanced under one of his workbenches and saw a distinctive shape. After we finished loading, I yelled over the sound of the motor...

Me: "Before you put that away, what about the anvil back there."
Him: "......you like anvils?"
Me: "I do!"
After pulling it out, I see it's pretty deteriorated and the markings aren't clear at all. I ask him what he wants for it.
Him: "How about ten bucks?"
Me: :-O..."Sure!

After we get everything loaded, I owed him $135. I have $130 or $140. When I ask him if he can break a twenty and says to just give him the $130! So I got the anvil for $5!61b58d5941a549b461ca855a39dfa98a.jpg47e524937bed8661ac6ca7a81266a878.jpg5e3739c46740ca5073db04192ed0d24a.jpg69191e3dd827dedfcb11657c2a47c785.jpg46742ce195ee68b450999de4c6a5113e.jpgc72b50f999dd68390bb59616551d9197.jpg5380d745ed111fef459469e4af898a83.jpg27a58b1d775e589aefd3c0905dd87363.jpgc9216749c7a53a0e530fc16f5e9ad8af.jpg6ba8eebe6fd78c260fb924540e24e30a.jpg0775551917c4b4233bd43658be0dea07.jpg64115bb9be55117935c1f94c1d7bd759.jpg764404316526144c59135fa9d17d3340.jpg870c04d31764b06ad16f44e4fac4c4c9.jpg5481dad47c8f50b5f475249099b80f98.jpg

BB: i haven't bought or even wanted to touch a RAS cause about 3.5 years ago (just before I started the GET HEALTHY THREAD) i carried an old Delta about 200 feet and ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK. hence my diet and losing 30 pounds.

so yep i'd buy the press and i need one just like that.

your $5 anvil is only a Peter Wright English one and with the 1 1 8 on the side i'll let you do the math in stones or sheckles or however they weigh them. I rarely see an anvil for sale anymore up here so i forgot what all the weights are, but I think the first 1 is 112 pounds, second 1 is 24 pounds and the last 8 is just 8 pounds. so maybe a 144 pound PETER WRIGHT ANVIL for $5. you best go back and tune that old guys car up or something.

nice finds!!

BB: Three great scores! Are you sure you are going to have time to host the thread while the deals are popping like this?

Macduf: I wondered where that other sock went! Also that cash!

Picked up some flip sockets off Facebook marketplace today. 30 bucks, a little surface rust, but they should clean up.9ae47d2f08ba3efb3eafc454f43854dc.jpg4c9247c408a77ee4317cb1d1757c2b08.jpgcb79eb0f227d7d239977a2657081794a.jpg

Hit up an estate sale today and maybe made a good find, maybe got taken. It's pretty obviously an S-K box, though I couldn't find any markings on it. It caught my attention because it's a BOX and ya gotta open the drawers. (Nearly empty) then I spied the front cover standing behind it. Doubly remarkable because it's a detaching cover. Then I picked it up. HEAVY. It's on the small side, 16 X 8 1/2 X 11 tall, but weighs 27 1/2 lbs.
Looking at some of the details, like the overly sturdy catch for the cover, and beefy handle, it made me wonder if it might be military--maybe Lugz is watching and can weigh in. I can envision it riding around strapped to a WWII Jeep carrying one of the tool kits he's so fond of.
Fingers crossed.
Though its in very good shape overall, several of the drawer stops are broken. There are a couple of pieces of spring steel stock the right size in it, but I'm not so sure of going through the anneal/bend/temper process with any great success. Is there a source for replacements?
Thanks, All

Estate sale, pretty much against my religion to buy first day, but the prices were good, so I bit. 13 Cman combos bundled so I couldn't see all, but the 22 and 24mm made it a good deal. Has 3/8-1" less 13/16, and 19mm. The Crafty sockets - a full set in the tray, 1/2" drive 12 point deepwell, several unused: 1/2-1-1/8" plus 25/32". WTF is 25/32 for?? 19.8mm equivalent makes no sense.
Clamps, of course NSTATM. All 3" Craftsman, same model number, but three slightly different variations. Got it all for $35, not a screamin' deal, but sure to be gone before half price tomorrow.

Close Drivesitfar, 1 1 8 would be 112 + 28 (1/4 of 112) + 8 for 148 pounds.

After we get everything loaded, I owed him $135. I have $130 or $140. When I ask him if he can break a twenty and says to just give him the $130! So I got the anvil for $5!

Only the first week of the year, and already in the running for the score of the year. ;)

Breaking the ice in 2019 with my first post. The tray for this set is colored appropriately. I think they were only used a few times if at all. Clean set, tiny bit of surface rust. Made in USA.

Cornwell STI324LMS 1/2 drive metric deep 6 point impact socket set including:
PM-3230-L 30mm
PM-3232-L 32mm
PM-3234-L 34mm
PM-3236-L 36mm
ST60, tray

NOT a you **** price @ $75 but my metric impacts used to stop at 27mm and I'm a sucker for metal trays.

Glad to see you guys are still finding deals!

The dry spell continues here; even the HS Flea didn't stir. I think they skip Jan. as I've never seen it open then, but the weather is brewing even though the rain is late... 3 sales listed in CL, none worth getting in the car for.

I have picked up some parts from a couple of guys on line, and I just made a deal for a KampLight single mantle lantern (Made by American Gas Machine or AGM). and I have a Freecycle PU for an 18V drill I need to go do.

I had almost given up hope since there was nothing promising on the internet but an estate sale a few blocks away popped up this morning so I checked it out. Had to go through two full garbage cans of miscellaneous stuff but found a few interesting items. The first picture is everything, the second is a pair of Lucas NOS tail light assemblies that look to me like maybe MGA. The next three are Craftsman, Crescent and Snap on. The incomplete set increased the size of my King **** collection by 1/3 and the last shot is a complete Duro Indestro hex key set.

Nice score on the anvil!
I’ve got a good handful of US and Swedish vintage anvils, but my first English one is still eluding me. I doubt it will be five bucks when it comes home.

First sale this year, really interesting with lots of old medical stuff in original packaging, tonics and such. I picked this Plomb wrench and two little Wedge Lock clamps. I've never seen them before. I made the rookie mistake of only taking two, leaving the other 6 and some nice little C clamps to look at another table- when I turned around they were gone!

Return to post, just found they are ceiling clamps meant to hold crossbars for installing suspended ceilings. I'll find some other use for them, I'm sure....

Picked up some flip sockets off Facebook marketplace today. 30 bucks, a little surface rust, but they should clean up.4c9247c408a77ee4317cb1d1757c2b08.jpg

No need to clean those. Just use them.

ST60, tray

NOT a you **** price @ $75 but my metric impacts used to stop at 27mm and I'm a sucker for metal trays.

http://www.cornwelltools.com/webcat...-Metric-Power-Impact-Socket-Set,-6-Point.html

Those are all good (useful) sizes. And surface rust on impact sockets is nothing. It just means they've been used. If you're worried, hit them with a quick spray of some WD40.

So, I have been jonesing like a fiend for a good sale lately, and yesterday one came up. One good enough that I went back today!
First day:

Highlight include a Stanley SweetHeart plane, two P&C ratchets, Craftsman flying V socket set, MAC spinner, Cresent socket box, long SK ratchet (needs kit) and Proto wire strippers.
Second day:

Highlights include a complete set of ratcheting wrenches, Pony clamp, Proto line wrench, misc. Proto LA, a Cresent wrench I needed to fix a double ender and a Plomb ignition wrench. Misc. sockets on both days include SK, Craftsman, Snap-on, MAC, Proto and Armstrong. Proto wrenches include a DBE chevron. I paid $45 altogether, and that was a story in its own self. The first day the guy (stepson) priced me and called to his mom to make change. OK. Next day he tells me to go ask his mom for a price. OK, so I go in the house. She looks at me and says "why did he send you inside?" She had a price list he made but she didn't even know half the tools and just cut me a price. Much better.

There was just a ton of stuff in sheds all over. If they had just spent a day or two getting the whole thing organized they would have done much better. But that is family run estate sales. I just missed getting a couple Stanley router planes, kinda bummed about that.

Here is are additional pics of the socket boxes:

Does anyone know a good way to clean paper labels? I don't see the old Cresent lables very often.

Thanks, Drives. However, I think you have the anvil mis-id'd. After doing some research, it is definitely an English anvil, given the weight markings, but the deep divots between the numbers seem to be distinctive of the Mousehole brand. The feet are also different than Peter Wright anvils are described. Still, for five bucks, I'm thrilled.

Went to the local pawn shop and picked up a 1/2” drive ratchet for my roadside emergency box, 5/8” USA craftsman spark plug socket for the same roadside box (mine walked away, dunno when), and a Wright USA 24mm (dunno why)

$16 and some change after tax... Dunno if I did good or not. Still trying to do research on the ratchet...

Only one sale today and not much in the way of tools. I did come across some cool old printing press plates. They were in a box marked $3 each. I only grabbed the Coffin one and when I went to pay the guy said I could grab another for free so I picked up the White King. I’m a sucker for old advertisements, and I love the oddity of the Coffin Roofing Company.

“Death to roof leaks!”

First pick ups of 2019! Hit a local Habitat Restore today and dug through some socket piles. Almost all SK sockets, with the two sockets on the left being Snap-On. The screwdriver is an SK, but it is in pretty rough shape. Picked it all up for $10!

If this source is correct, my anvil could date from between 1820 and 1835, based on what I can parse from the lettering. I see an "H" in the top line, "USE" on the third line, and part of an "O" and an "LE" on the fourth line before the weight numbers.d9def3783a7a5159b02019c0df91f923.jpg

Nice find!

BF - that has to be another Art Steel Company (Asco) box.
Yup. You nailed it. It is.

BFBOB:

My Art Steel Co armorer's box has a leather handle, otherwise almost exactly the same as yours. The only other major difference I notice in comparison is that your drop front lid has a sort of taper in it across the top that mine doesn't have. Although there are anomalies to this, as a general rule of thumb, leather handles are 30's and WWII, and steel handles are late 40's and 50's. So I suspect your is postwar or KW. I posted several photos of mine in the GJ Toolboxes thread a few years ago... Instead of re-posting here, click here to view that post.

Here is the Art Steel WWII contracts list, just for some historic perspective...

And here is an ASCO logo from the 40's..

A lot of the logos (water transfer decal) do NOT survive, but yours is an ASCO without a doubt.

I am curious to know if your drop front lid/tray has the small parts trough in it like mine does?

Does anyone know a good way to clean paper labels? I don't see the old Cresent lables very often.
Good? No. But I have had some okay results with a dishrag sopped up in warm water and soap, then wrung out a little, and wiped carefully across the label. I repeated several times between letting it dry out in between. It will never return it to the original, and tends to give the whole thing a stained sepia look (especially whites and light colors), but it looks better than dirt! I’ve got some before and after pics of an Indestro ignition set label here and here.

Macduf: I wondered where that other sock went! Also that cash!
Snerk.

I did pick up one other thing this week:

An adult tricycle! I have been having a few balance issues lately but I love riding a bike when it is nice out. So, I stumbled across this bad boy. A Tristar, or Torker depending on who sells it this one is missing some of the decals. Raleigh sells them so I might pick up some of their stuff. But anyway, it will also be used by the wife for heading to the farmers market and there is a swap meet up here once or twice a year on a road race track that is 2.4 miles of auto parts. This will be perfect!
