Boy Lugz, they missed stamping the D jaw on that one!

Those are nice little DP vises. I have a 993 with 2-3/4" wide jaws, what is the width on that one?

I haven't been without a Versa-vise or Gyro-Vise since I first used them in a shop decades ago and think they are about the most versatile utility vise that has been made. Gyro-Vise has 3.5 x 2.25 jaws. Versa-Vise has 2.5 x 3.5 jaws.

This popped up on the board in my area today at a really low price. It’s a 7” jaw post vise made by Iron City. It appears to be complete and in great condition. I’m guessing it’s about 160 lbs. I got tongs and some hardy tools with it.b0b9a4f3330b8166c8ec0c12ce48a489.jpg1bbbb37b75d468e927932073b9971515.jpg783647a58dea9641cb8b97d57faa207f.jpg

The vise really does give one an idea of the gigantic size of the beer can :bounce:

Who was that masked man who grabbed another vise? Zorro of the vises strikes again, very nice

I think you already have a nice anvil. Now that you have the blacksmith vise, tongs, hardy tools, the question is do you have a forge? If so I am placing the first order for a Bowie knife !

BTW nice score  but what is with that tiny beer can ? :bounce:

Thanks gman you’re too kind. There’s a bit of a line but I’ll see what I can do to bump you to the front of it for that Bowie. The chargers kept me on the edge of my seat towards the end but they’re moving on and that’s all that matters.

A friend of mine from Taiwan sent me some photos of giant clamps that are used for positioning the earthquake-resistant bridge sections in the mountains. He said they basically clamp onto the pillars and are held in place with long threaded rods.

Thought I'd share....they kinda look like giant Irwin speed clamps ^_^

Rock Island 574 Vice in outstanding condition. What should I ask for it?
The brass plate reads: Manufactured by
Birman Electrical Company
Rock Island Division
Rock Island Illinois
Made in the United States of America

I hope the photos attach correctly.
I have dissembled the vice so I can take close ups in case others wish them.
Thank you...

So I've had this Masterforce (Wilton rebrand) for a little over 2 years now.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/5WNJM6ruWxustqM1A

It has it's positives, but on the whole I can't recommend it.

First the good.

The fucker is big and cheap. It can be had for only $89 doll hairs from the Menards right now: https://www.menards.com/main/tools-...107-c-9135.htm?tid=6601975682285911432&ipos=6

It opens up real wide, here it is next to a little 4.5" chinesium Craftyman: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Sez1YDrhgpuuSDNk9

And even wider still if you swap the dynamic jaw around: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7mnhwwSykE3xTU1g7

Second, the swivel base locks down nice and tight. No problems there.

So it's useful for holding big ****, and it's cheap...now for the downsides.

1. The static jaw does not overhand the work surface. This means if you're clamping something long in the vise, you can't clamp it straight up and down, because the workbench is in the way. The static jaw should be an inch or so out away from the work top so long items can be clamped properly.

2. All show, no go. If you really crank down on this thing, especially if you put a pipe over the handle, it's gonna **** the screw. Mine is gritty and has some issues already with only light, occassional use. To quote AvE, she's not skookum partner.

3. Jaws are not particularly durable, nor are they aligned that great. Plenty of slop and back/forth movement as the dynamic jaw goes in and out.

4. The rubber bumpers for the handle are a great idea, but they're too big and they fucked off right away, never to be seen again.

On the whole, I would recommend this vise as a specialty item for guys who need to hold big **** now and again, but wouldn't recommend as a daily driver, just not strong enough.

Hey have any of you seen a Wilton vise with brass swivel locks like these? They look factory and it’s definitely not just a plating. They are solid. This is a Chicago USA 4.5” vise made 12/46 if that matters. Thanks.

Assuming the vise is indeed in good condition and going by the prices for a typical 4 1/2" American bench vise with swivel base on eBay may be $200-$300.

Generally for local deals price will be lower (depending on the demand in your geographic location.)

I've seen some out there and they were all from the 1940's like your example. I'd agree that they look OEM.

This jaw face doesn’t exactly match the description of outstanding condition, does it?

The Captain is probably comparing the 574 to something like these, which would make his seem exceptional.:D

I did a mock up to get the post vise off of the ground and check the height as originally made. At 39” it seems like a good height for striking as well as working in general. It’s a 7” Iron City and is stamped 150 on the front lip, it’s a beast. I gave is a much deserved WD-40 bath before I do a mild clean up on it next weekend.
