Made it to my first estate sale of the year, pretty decent one. Was advertised as Model A parts and lots of shop stuff and tools.

The estate co offered appointments before the sale, this just wasn’t listed on the one I’m subbed to, so I was able to go after work last night and had the place to myself. It was really sweet that I could take my time (was there 2-1/2 hours) and look around, through, under and make multiple sweeps.

Lots of older pliers and such, Herbrand tapered needle nose type pliers, etc.

Not in pictures, I bought 5 gallon can of rubbing alcohol.

Ok, first pic is Thomas & Betts crimper ,I just had to get two of them, Bernard wire cutters/plier, guess this the original side cutters?. A CM ring plier.

Look at the calibration decal for the crimper.
1964!

Next up is pliers, some I have no clue what there for, like the three on the bottom, but that’s the fun of this stuff.

A group of little cutters and needle nose, mostly Klein, bent needle is Proto.

Curved file, a USA drill bit holder, pin vise with debur bit? Or countersink? What looks like a file handle with a hex wrench ground to a stubby hook.015a96275e2d540ddcae706695e4890f.jpg
And some small C clamps, Cincinnati, brinks brands. Small font number and letter stamp set

Also picked up this CM machinist box for a member here. Great condition and with keys.

It’s was a blast, and remember, it’s the hunt that’s the real enjoyable part to me.
A lot of good conversation with the estate sale guy.

Nice haul, cb!

Those larger BERNARD pattern side-cutters probably have "Wm Schollhorn" around the pivot on the other side. If so, see if they have "LODI" (economy line) or "PARAGON" (premium line) marked on them somewhere. BERNARD is the name of the patent holder; the original manufacturer was Wm. Schollhorn. Sargent, the smaller pair to the left, bought Schollhorn out a few years after WWII. They are slightly newer. I have a small collection of Schollhorn BERNARD pliers, posted on a thread woody started on the subject, linked here, if you'd care to see other examples and read more.

I ran into a wooden toolbox today with a **** load of antique wrenches. At least 10 x more than what I pulled out. I stopped when my fingers got wooden (it was 22*F and worse with stiff wind chill!) and my sanity got the best of me. Typical story. Guy cleaned out an old barn.

- Most of these aren't even marked. There's a buggy wrench in there and a few that look like little toolpost wrenches for old machines. See the pressed steel DOE wrench above the hook spanner with different hex openings in the handle? That is the first tool I have ever found with my initials in it. I may frame it!

- The youngest wrench in this lot is probably the little Long C Craftsman "CI" N3 3/8 x 7/16 dwarfie 15* pattern DBE and that was made in the late 1930's through WWII!

- The S-wrench is a Kilborn & Bishop. I've got a "SAXON" brand K&B alligator wrench this will keep company.

- The looped handle wrench is a Walden-Worcester Ford Connecting Rod wrench.

- The two Auto-Kit style pressed steel wrenches with the tap hole in the middle for a screw to keep the whole set together are New Britain. These are the first NB I have ever seen in this style. Typically when I see these they are invariably Indestro.

- The lonely chisel is a STANLEY "Sweetheart", my third in 7 years. At this rate I'll have a full set by the time I am 75 years old!

Thanks for the info, I will certainly read up on the link you provided.

I'll look closer at them and report back.

I'm fortunate to finish at 13:00 on a Friday so went the long way home today.
First stop was a reclamation yard, brilliant place full of lots of wierd and wonderful items to repurpose. They also have bins of tools.... Unfortunately these bins sit outside all year and this time they were simply buckets of rusty water [emoji30]

Anyway went to another favourite in Leeds called "Scrap" based in an old mill. A charity that takes clean off cuts and waste from industry for art projects. (think miss printed Starbucks cups, foam off cuts, sample books)

Picked up six 7"x 32" planks of marine ply that had been cnc'd out for something for £3
A small scraper for £2

Ever wondered what happens to those sample blocks of Marble that salesmen use when your buying a new kitchen counter?..... Well at Scrap I just bought a fancy marble coaster for the workshop mug for £0.10 [emoji1] View attachment 85053120180908_175122-COLLAGE.jpgDSC_1119.jpg

If stinkdriver was in the dictionary, this little Xcelite set would be pictured alongside!
-Don

:lol_hitti Stinxcelite is what I call them. Been around enough of them, they’re in every nook and cranny around Buffalo and apparently everywhere else too! Of course, it’s easier to blame it on the Craftsman. We should hold a stink-off competition to determine the worst offender. I have a nice container of used Craftys that’ve been brewing for years, lol.

I can see why they'd be very popular with fishermen, Marlyn, not only because of their dual plying and side-cutting utilities, but for their light weight (they are not forged, but famously made of formed sheet metal), but I can assure you that from the first to the last and every variant in between that he patented (and they were all pretty much based on his first patent - 427,220, in 1890 - for the parallel jaw action), including these 1892 side-cutters, were originated for industrial applications, including textile, upholstery, electrical, and light manufacturing. All the early patents, ads, and brochures will attest to that. EDIT: I don't know anything about Sargent past 1948, when they bought Wm. Schollhorn out. Sargent may very well have marketed them for the fishing industry in later years.

We hit a couple marginal sales this morning. The first sale had some non tool items along with my regular tool pickups. The second sale netted only a few tools. At least the rain mostly held off until we arrived home. The first picture is the haul from the first sale. The next four shots are closeups of tools from that sale. The sixth picture is items from the second sale with a shot of the NBLB auto wrench. No Rolls Royce tools this week, unfortunately.

CB- Nice Craftsman box.. They had a number of machinist boxes there. A middle box, I think it was a Kennedy, caught my eye. They certainly had some odd pliers. Oh, and all the great vintage wrenches, I was drooling, but afraid of going overboard on spending.

I appreciate you tipping me off on that sale (kinda wish I didn’t know about it,lol), it was awesome, one of the best I’ve been to in a long time, but the prices the estate guy was quoting were high. It’s tough to buy when nothing is priced and the estate guy pretty much knows everything’s worth. Still was great to see all the old (remaining) parts and tools, as they did presale as CB said. I think many of the high dollar items were gone, including the cars. The hard to find specialty tooling went beforehand too.

One guy wanted a box full of small files and offered $70. The buyer was obnoxious though, and he and an estate worker kept battling over that and other items for a half hour and he wound up with a big box of stuff and the worker yelling “here take it!”. I would have taken the 70 and ran on the files. I even told the worker I don’t think anyone else is going to step up with an offer like that. I think he just wanted to win the battle, but 80 or 90 bucks for some used files including some rusty ones is too much.

I think I came out okay.

- Some old used and nos light badges. Sportlite, some Chevy and GM in there. It helped to negotiate a package deal with some hand tools to ease the pain when buying these.

-Proto chest! I spotted it in the photos and thought maybe it was a Plomb. Contents came with. Looks like odds and ends, not much for keepers or sellable items.

- K-D sign! Maybe off a display rack. Had to negotiate for that as well.

That is a nice Proto LA box. My Plomb top box came packed with misc. like that. You take the good with the bad sometimes. And I hear you about estate sales guys. I have seen some just completely overwhelmed within hours, others are hard as nails on prices.

Good to hear I'm not the only person that all too often does 3 or more times in a garage or shop st a sale trying to figure what treasures I missed on my previous go-arounds. Nice work RagTop! :)

Nothin wrong with an F6.5 in a tight spot.

We hit a couple marginal sales this morning. The first sale had some non tool items along with my regular tool pickups.
I put in some of that bug wash...the fumes in through the cowl vent in my truck are really bad.

I have a side gig at my friends salsa company where I deal with the machines, mechanization and streamlining. 2 weeks ago, Our Hobart VCM-40 (40 qt 7hp blender) puffed some smoke. I decided to tear it down before it got worse. To get the stator out, you have to remove the wires from the switch, but that's in a big aluminum housing, You have to remove the switch handle before it will come out. Switch shaft is steel, 1/2" square into the aluminum handle, corroding for a couple decades. It was a no-go, so I left it soaking in blaster for 2 weeks. Today I bought a couple sacrificial putty knives to shim between the switch handle and housing, and used a longer retainer bolt to drive the switch shaft down out of the handle. Only slightly broke the $600 switch:mad: Maybe it doesn't matter, because it looks like $2300 to rewind the smoked armature anyway, and that's new used machine price. Anyway, while I was buying crappy putty knives at the used tool store, I also found these;

Snappy KRA-15 wrench rails, and an H.H.Sticht reed tach. I had never even heard of these, but you push it up against a thing, and it gives an RPM reading. New list is $330, but the minty wrinkle coat has me thinking this one is vintage. You can see my fan is vibrating away at 4750 RPM and a harmonic about half that.

3bay: great finds today!! you gave me a great idea. when I find old cool stuff that maybe i'm going to pass on or give away, but I like the badges maybe i'll start saving the badges especially on stuff that can't be saved.

I'd love to find an old PROTO or PLVMB box in the wild some day. I passed on one about 4 years ago cause the guy wanted $150 and i still wish I'd bought it cause it was like new.

ALL: sorry I forgot to take pictures, but I managed to meet one of our old GJ members who lives about an hour from me to pick up a 6 foot tall 3 foot tall and a foot deep that is 2 sections bolted together and its a bolt bin on a stand that he couldn't find a spot for. a picture of Mt. Rainier that I had to stop and take a picture of that is almost in his backyard and damn it still is fun to just look at after 60 years of seeing it. he also had saved me a plvmb ratchet that i'm adding to my small collection.

I also picked up an almost new 3 foot tall 3 foot wide 4 bin with dividers Lyon Rotobin off of Craigslist and i'll get pictures of both as I get them both set up. I usually only find vintage ones of these that i'm able to find funds for cause these are spendy new, but this one looks like it was barely used and he needed it to find a good home and I obliged.

hope you all have a great weekend!!

Bubba strikes again.

EDIT: BTW, nice haul, 3b!

Thanks. Yeah Bubba certainly did. It’s fun to think how in 1928 (not necessarily) it was no holds barred on that ratchet.

That is a nice Proto LA box. My Plomb top box came packed with misc. like that. You take the good with the bad sometimes. And I hear you about estate sales guys. I have seen some just completely overwhelmed within hours, others are hard as nails on prices.

Thanks, it’s a cool little box. I’m not sure if the white lettering wore off, I see some remnants of white. I thought it was repainted, because the under coat is pure red, but the maroon is crinkle finish. Will have to keep an eye out for a tray.

A cut F7. That is like defacing the Monalisa. Nice find on the proto chest.
Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3061, 3070,

:lol_hitti thanks. It saw it on the bottom of an old wood crate under all 20’s wrenches and said what the heck is that short ratchet. I paid up for everything else and it was the only real deal of the day, at $1 (a Snappy main bearing wrench with it he wanted 35 for). I’m happy because I didn’t have one at all.

Edit: Drives- we were posting at the same time. Thanks, and great photos.

Mt Rainier is looking grand! Wife and I went to Seattle for the first time a few years ago. Spent almost a week there, even made it inside the national park but never got to see the mountain. She was hiding in the clouds. Great view your friend has. I'd never tire of that view either! Thanks for sharing!

I had nothing special to do on Friday, so I hit a few estate sales and the restore. The first two sales weren't that special, either overpriced new Craftsman or super low-end woodworking tools. Managed to get the two toolboxes and a couple 3/4 Pony bar clamps that were never used (still in the back of my truck.) Then I hit the restore, picking up the Proto and Craftsman drivers, an SK Wayne sparkplug socket along with an MT1 drill bit. The third sale was a TOO but it was the best (aren't they always?) The sellers new Proto and Snap-on but everything else was dirt cheap. There was a Kennedy triple stack that I thought long and hard about, but I have too many boxes as it is:

Penens socket set (made by SK), misc Proto and Craftsman, a cool box that had been for Dremel bits, a WF extension and a heavy duty sander guide.
The tool boxes:

The red box will become the new home for my Hinsdale 1/2 set.

EDIT: Not Penens but Penncraft. I have Proto empire on the brain.

We're down in Buzzards Bay, MA today to see our daughter off for her last winter cruise on the school's training ship. With some time to kill before the ship departs, we stopped into a local flea market. I dug through some rusty tubs of tools and found the following for eight bucks:

Danco No 1 rawhide faced hammer. Needs new faces, but will be a good companion to the big Defense hammer I found last year.

Crescent LS70 1/2" ratchet

South wire SA822 wire stripper

Mac TBH700 tubing bender

Along the "cool thing I didn't buy" was this big vintage portable fan. Neat lines, but no need.a4da59c3addd607cd1d9ce476020a0ce.jpgd50e49ee29ee7802908448a838056e7f.jpg0083cc3c650d4844bd50ec463a86344a.jpg

Picked up this nice used Snap On KRA4800 Roll Cab and matching top and mid box for $1000 from my Snap On dealer. Needs a couple slides but they are on their way already. Have been looking for some thing like this for a while for my home garage.

wow.
you really DO ****.
:tantrum2:
Good guesses, gents. Outlaw nailed one out of three.

So I was perusing Facebook Marketplace this week and found a half dozen Craftsman radial arm saws under $100 within a 50 mile radius. For those who don't know, Craftsman RAS' 10" and smaller and without factory blade guards are under recall and you can get a hundred bucks for sending in the motor and carriage. They even pay your shipping costs. Anyway, one in particular caught my eye: a bronze era saw sitting on a cabinet WITH the key that activates the on/off switch. I bought a similar RAS last year that I decided to keep, but it was missing the key. The saw on FBMP had a bunch of other stuff (blades, etc), so I figured what the hey.

At the agreed-to time and place, I met an older gent who had the RAS out and set up. It was nice, ran well, and the accessories were impressive.

Craftsman 100 113.29001 RAS with Crowntop base cabinet and wheel kit, with keys for both!
A collection of period literature for Sears/Craftsman items.
Crafty moulding head blade kit, barely used
Crafty Kromedge dado blade kit, barely used
Crafty 9-3230 Hold down Kit, New In Box!
A dozen saw blades, minimally used
Four grinding wheels
All wrapped in 1981 vintage newspapers...it was neat to see some of the old comics.

I agreed to his $75 asking price, and then asked "What else are you trying to move along?"

Him: "Uh, well, I've got an arbor press over there," pointing to the other side of his tractor.

Me: hmmm, I've seen other guys on the GS thread score bench top arbor presses..."Yeah, let's take a look."

This one was a little bit bigger....

Me: "Wow. That's a biggun! What would you want for that?"
Him: " I'd like to see it go to someone who appreciates it. What's it worth to you?"
Me: "Well, I don't really need one that big. How about fifty bucks?"
Him : "Sure!"
Me: :-O

He even helped me load it and the RAS with his front end loader. As he was picking up the RAS, I glanced under one of his workbenches and saw a distinctive shape. After we finished loading, I yelled over the sound of the motor...

Me: "Before you put that away, what about the anvil back there."
Him: "......you like anvils?"
Me: "I do!"
After pulling it out, I see it's pretty deteriorated and the markings aren't clear at all. I ask him what he wants for it.
Him: "How about ten bucks?"
Me: :-O..."Sure!

After we get everything loaded, I owed him $135. I have $130 or $140. When I ask him if he can break a twenty and says to just give him the $130! So I got the anvil for $5!61b58d5941a549b461ca855a39dfa98a.jpg47e524937bed8661ac6ca7a81266a878.jpg5e3739c46740ca5073db04192ed0d24a.jpg69191e3dd827dedfcb11657c2a47c785.jpg46742ce195ee68b450999de4c6a5113e.jpgc72b50f999dd68390bb59616551d9197.jpg5380d745ed111fef459469e4af898a83.jpg27a58b1d775e589aefd3c0905dd87363.jpgc9216749c7a53a0e530fc16f5e9ad8af.jpg6ba8eebe6fd78c260fb924540e24e30a.jpg0775551917c4b4233bd43658be0dea07.jpg64115bb9be55117935c1f94c1d7bd759.jpg764404316526144c59135fa9d17d3340.jpg870c04d31764b06ad16f44e4fac4c4c9.jpg5481dad47c8f50b5f475249099b80f98.jpg

Finally in the 2019 game, been slim pickings around here lately. Went to 2 sales today, little further out than I like, but it was worth it. Sale started at 8AM, I didn't see it till 9:30, got there about 10:15. Was told it was insane at 8:00, so you can imagine my surprise to find the 2 vises and the Snap On tool box. Box was the first thing I saw, opened it up, no tray, walked about 10 FT. and found the tray. Then I found the Columbian 5-1/2" vise, lot of the smalls, and then stumbled across the Craftsman vise on my second or third pass thru. It was a warehouse of sorts for a clean out co., tons of stuff just piled up everywhere, had to do lots of digging but it was worth it, prices were very fair. Found the empty Craftsman crown 3/4 drive case and the brand new needle scaler on my fifth or sixth pass thru, after I had moved the vises and tool box out to my truck.

On my way home stopped at an estate sale which got me these for $7. Bag of galvy screws, starting fluid, cool old C-clamp, long tow chain, at least 15 ft., and a shaft collar. Lastly there is that weird contraption for sealing packages or something shown in the last 2 pics. It caught my eye, when I went to put it back down seller told me to take it for free, he didn't know anything about it either and was going to end up throwing it away.

Not many sales this weekend, managed to stop by the last estate sale at 25% off before heading home. Found a 3 pack of Stanley no 180 18in auger bit extensions in mint condition all three for $4 and a Mephisto 3in adjustable auger bit for $6. 2 of the 3 extensions look like theyre barely used if at all and 1 has only a very light amount of wear on it. The auger bit still has a very nice polish on it with no rust.

454 - That is a packing tape dispenser. The tape itself has water soluble glue and is pulled over a wet sponge and cut.

I used one at a warehouse job YEARS ago.

We had one at another job that was electrically driven and had buttons that corresponded to different lengths of tape.

If you seal a lot of shipping boxes it's pretty cool.

Froze my *** off at the flea this morning but found a few things.

3/8" Snap On F-71-C and a 1/2" Bonney 4098. Both were frozen solid but for a buck each...
1e04822dbf815bdd8cdd8c1757c36a74.jpg

The Snappy cleaned up fairly well. According to the internet it's a 1953 model. The Bonney is working now after a soak in ATF, but is otherwise non-serviceable.
936e8c18bddb4c75a12c4f4c7bb58c64.jpg

4.5" 6amp Hitachi for $10
756cd303d7b3120b218befef7bb701f4.jpg

My biggest buy was 10 of these brand new "Roundtrip" boxes. About $20 ea on the internet, but I got them for $4ea. Been wanting some of these for awhile.
eaed29927bec3fc44ac5647b1a59e92a.jpg

Hit a monster ReStore on the other side of town that I'd never been to before. Oddly, the only real tools they had were brand new, like this wall of Gearwrench sets, all SAE.
259cc7ddc52b4d47d0c5c4002ed9e0fe.jpg

Saw another rack of dozens of individually packaged Armstrong impact sockets for .50 each + discount and got super excited.

Until I realized they were ALL 17mm, lol.

I did managed to snag this pretty nice still-in-the-wrapper GW ratcheting driver set that included 3 lengths each of magnetic shafts and 1/4" socket shafts, plus a flexy shaft for $14.

Boofer, it warmed up at the flea around 1....I was pretty amazed how few vendors were there today, compared to last week.

Here's my haul for today:
- Barcalo 731A DOE
- Craftsman (H) 1" deep socket and 10" 1/2" dr. extension
- Plvmb WF-128 9/16" deep, 1/2" dr. socket
- 6" pliers. Interesting with the 45 forged into both pieces.
- Stanley wide mouth thermos, dated 1978 (with No. 15 stopper)
- c. 1962 copy of Robert Ruark Uhuru
- Vietnam-era memo book (FSN, not NSN)
- C Ration container, "Ham, Pineapple" made by Kern Foods Inc. Industry, CA 29749. So I'm guessing 70s/80s production? Not sure when Industry renamed to City of Industry
- And the Girl Scouts got me for 2 packages of cookies...

Found a nice 1/4 cman ratchet set, a 3/8 power Kraft ratchet, and an interesting socket set. Thought it was a Chinese cheapo set by the name. Then I saw the USA markings. Any idea who made the ratchet? Also is the black cman case earlier or later than the grey cases?
