Nope, and if VA doesn't have one, it may not exist.

<s>Picked this Porter-Cable FR350 framing nailer up off CL today. I've been wanting a framing nailer for a while but the only ones I've seen were priced too high or beat to hell. Also, came with two half-boxes of 3" & 3-1/4" nails. Set me back a Grant and I'm happy to have it at that price.</s>

EDIT: My bad...Sorry guys!

That is indeed a nice looking nailer but are you sure you wanted to post it on the vise thread or may be on the "Show your new tool arrivals" thread? :headscrat

Nope, never seen one.---Would like to.---Looks shaped kinda like one of these except, that one is a clamp-on.

Yes they are very similar and are very nice, BUT do they have warp drive? :headscrat:lol_hitti

PS
These vises were made by Romulans :bounce:

I’m pretty sure you violated the prime directive by disclosing that information.

Here is the finished product. This is the Reed 31 I mentioned earlier. I’m still looking for the big cast iron wing nut for the underbench post mount. It’s a 3/4-10 thread size. I could buy a new one that would fit but I d like to find vintage if possible. They look COOL!
I could also use a hardware store hex nut of that size. I have a couple of those in a parts drawer right now. Too easy. :)

There is a pile of vise parts listed now on eBay that includes the part I need (with a lot that I don’t.)
I don’t feel like paying over $60 to get a wing nut.
Here is a portion of the eBay seller’s photo so you know what I’m looking for.

Do you have anymore pictures of the round table the vise is sitting on?

sure, I made it out of 2 foot across 1/2 plate. 3" square tubing, and a pulley off a pump jack.36" tall. Works great for just about everything. Can clamp all the way around it. Its pretty cluttered with clamps and stuff atm.

Shift and RagTop, hat's off to both of you.---Fine work fellows.

Thanks... I agree with RagTop and I’d guess just about everybody who contributes to these pages. It’s oddly satisfying to acquire a hunk of iron all rusted up and even sometimes seized and then through the use of various tools and techniques learned here on GJ, bring it to life as a handsome and very useable tool that opens and closes with one finger.

Nice job!

To be clear, is the seller asking $60 for the parts which you do not need plus the wing nut that you need? If so why don’t you contact the seller and see if he would just sell the wing nut alone for a reduced price?

That’s exactly what I did a couple of days ago. Seller is thinking about it. Things will look better for my case after the listing expires without a bidder.

Va, did you see the Iron City post vise that Matchless Antiques put on the board? The post vise is nice but what’s up with that hulk lurking in the background?

Outlaw et al
The "tail fin" is the puzzle I was hoping to solve. My first thought was some sort of quick adjust rack/ratchet mechanism. As it is a design patent there is no requirement to explain how it functions, so a working model is needed. The patent is classed only under D8/74 - From USPTO:
"This class provides for design patents claiming ornamental designs for:
1. Tools and implements for agriculture forestry and horticulture
2. Other tools and implements
3. Handle, knob and pull
4. Hinge
5. Locking and closing device
6. Fastener, support and mount not elsewhere specified
7. Fitting for door, window and furniture not elsewhere specified
8. Miscellaneous
9. Digests for Handle Configurations"

As of yet I have not found any references to prior work or any patents referencing it as prior work. No related patents either.

In any case, I want one.

Not a unicorn, but a chimera, is my guess.
Possibly the designer had some varied examples of functional vises at hand, but did not know how they worked.
But...Assuming that object could function at all, then the “tail fin” might house the spindle nut. Perhaps it rocks on a spring below it. The teeth on the upper surface could possibly engage/interface with a lip on the back of the static. The upper rod is exposed as it vanishes into the static, implying that the spindle and lower rod also pass into an open cavity in the static, rather than separate bores, allowing the entire dynamic to lift up. So maybe it IS a quick-adjust mechanism.
But I favor my first thought: an illustrator that mashed up several vises with different operating mechanisms. Probably nonviable.

But mine is a 5160.

All: What's the difference in the 516x vises versus the 519x vises?

Here are photos of two Craftsman vises that I own - a 5163 versus a 5197. You can see a number of differences between them. But they were both made for Craftsman by Rock Island.

Here’s something for all of us to consider about those awesome 519x vises...
(I have 2 of ‘em...a 5191 and a 5197)

Here is a screenshot of a 2013 auction result where a NEW IN THE BOX 5197 sold for $71.00
Yeah, I know that all of wish we had that vise but the real interesting piece of my message is the country of origin marked on that cardboard box...

So maybe Rock Island had some vises made in Japan (immediate post war) ?
Or are there other possible explanations?

MADE IN JAPAN, still higher quality than China I guess?

Do these craftsman vises have made in USA cast on the body anywhere?

Shiftless, that NIB Craftsman vise is very different in design from the one that I posted. I think that it is much newer.

Oh no!
You’re absolutely right, Maui. Thanks for straightening me out.
Sorry to cause undo excitement. “My Bad”

The Craftsman 391.5197 is sometimes advertised on C/L as simply a 5197
I remember getting excited about seeing that number in a C/L ad once a long time ago.
The 391 series Craftsman vises were all made in Japan. They were pretty good quality. Maybe 1970’s vintage right?
I used to have one but traded it away to a guy who hauled off about half a ton of dirt for me.

I think so. It looks like it is a Columbian vise that was made for Craftsman in the early 1970s.

yuck!

MADE IN JAPAN, still higher quality than China I guess?

Do these craftsman vises have made in USA cast on the body anywhere?

After Rock Island, Columbian made vises for Craftsman with the vendor code 506. When Warren Mfg bought Columbian, the number vendor code (or whatever you call the preceding number) was switched to 391. Production of the vises was sent to Japan...but the castings were mostly the same. The later 391 vises started indicating the jaw width on the bottom front of the dynamic slide.

You'll see the 506 vises marked "Made in USA". The 391 vises were not marked at all, or marked japan on the bottom of the swivel I think.

I think Warren bought Columbian in '72/'73.

I've personally found the Japanese vises to be of good quality....I have one of the Japanese Morgan-ish knock off Hexagram vises, and it appears to be a very stout unit.

Yes, the Japanese ones are good quality.
Here are some pictures of my Craftsman 391.5188. It has been repainted a brighter red.
Clearly marked on the bottom of the base JAPAN
The BF is a foundry code indicating where it was cast.
