Most people don't particularly like a larger vise as a user but if it operates as smooth as a raw oyster, a big vise makes a very good user.---JMO.

Glad to see the Columbians finally get some respect by-the-way.

Columbian #608.---Rigid's first cousin.

Monster vises look great on the bench. That 608 looks like it’s in great condition btw.

Until I saw these photos, I was feeling pretty proud of myself - since I can push the rolling lift dolly (that I use to pick up heavy vises) across the work shop only using one arm.

Is that the 23? If so, just one left to round out the family, right?

Hi Jeff, it’s a 19 1/2 that’s in great condition. The 18 and 23 are still eluding me.

You're welcome buddy! It does look nice for sure. How was the drive? Might as well have been Mexico!

An extra hour with traffic but it was worth it. I’m going to do a light clean up on it tomorrow, I’ll post a couple of pics.

Finally got my $20 estate sale Prentiss 264 properly mounted, and took some new pictures to celebrate. Here it is in all its fully unrestored ~62-71 year old patina glory.

Has anyone ever determined when Parker stopped producing Prentiss vises? I remember reading that Parker bought Prentiss in 1948, but I could never find an answer as to how long they continued producing these Meriden Prentiss models. I would guess at the very latest they were discontinued when Parker got bought by Union.

The vise looks like it came out of a time capsule, very impressive.

Hi guys,
Long time lurker on this thread and after picking up an old vice today thought I'd best man up and post here. :D
I'd love a US vice but there really aren't that many here in the UK, might have to settle for a YORK rather than a WILTON and a RECORD over PARKER.

As I said picked up this old clamp-on hinged vice from a Carboot sale today, rusty and bent but functional for £4

Which had this strange mounting/backing plate wedged in (plus a nail!)
DSC_1152.jpg
Spent the afternoon stripping, straightening, electrolysis and wire brushing it down

She's come up rather sweet with just a bit of Danish oil on the metal.

As to the rest of my vices, well they are all kind of small with that blue modern IRWIN as my daily and a couple of small modelling vices used as hanging points above my work bench....FYI if you ever have a small pot metal China model vice and are about to bin it...drill a hole in the jaw and use it as a lamp holder :lol_hitti

Wow Gerard, Is there a mark on that Prentiss? Well Done!

Thanks everyone. There are some shallow cut marks on top that couldn't be seen from that angle, but that looks like about the hardest use it saw, and importantly the slide seems to have been spared from any makeshift anvil duty.

Stripped my Millers Falls York vise to repaint it and also to see if it was made in Romania as was stated in another post. This vise does not appear to have been made in Romania as there was no bondo under the Millers Falls sticker. The vise is completely cast iron with no bondo anywhere. The only marking is the 80 on the one side. The vise is new old stock and is in very good condition. I will make a few adjustments so it will have smoother movement, but other than that all it needs is some paint. The first two pictures are the little York. The last picture is a Wilton C1 that I am restoring. It is ready for paint too.

Ok, back to square 1. Been searching the net quite frequently, i.e.: eBay, Amazon, Vice Replacement Parts, etc.. The vice I have is a fluke, meaning there is no one that has seen or heard of my vice let alone replacement jaws.
Measurements are 4" Long, 3/4" Thick, 1" High with Mounting Screw Holes at 2" spread. I am considering cobbling a set that I can get the closest to the 2" spread and drill to make that measurement. Ideally, I would like to have hardened steel and serrated.
What would be the charge to make a set? I understand pricing, but may be my only option.

The final resting place for dad’s Morgan. I even made a bolt on mount for the welding trailer. 322e47cd58cd7d50de1cb0f68b8b4c1f.jpg9ecd6ec425e5b960409cac741dd29762.jpg

My apologies KMScott. I made a mistake.

Willie, I accept your apology. Let me suggest that you get someone to measure your vise that understands decimal numbers and to measure your vise and not the beat up jaws, you need to know the center to center to be more accurate on that critical dimension. I got around 2.08 Center to center by memory and that could be incorrect, I know it is more then 2". Then check to see if the threaded holes are centered to the outside of your vise. Check to see what the dimension is of the threaded hole center to the jaw shelf, then you can create a set of jaws that will bolt on without hand fitting. Someone with a Bridgeport can tilt the head 30 degrees and cut serrations, I like to use .125 pitch from center to center on serrations around .03 deep. Make them out of A2 toolsteel about .004 over size and mail them to me and I will heat treat them and surface grind them for free. Kevin

I’ve been looking for one of these for awhile and finally found one this weekend.

It’s missing the base but for $5 I couldn’t complain one bit.

For $5 its a steal! A Base is easy and if to were me I'd for build the retractable version that recesses into the bench! (If I ever get back to my little loading/workbench in my garage work room I'll do just that.)

One of the members here Shift has been conducting a very interesting and informative survey of the number of vises that each member owns. As seen from this survey some members have one or two and some have over 200 vises.

But at the end of day personally for me, it is not the number of vises or their size etc that matters but rather it is the love of quality vises that brings us here together and that is iregardless of who (us or another member) owns them.

IMHO, if there was a membership requirement (which there is none) for this vise club it would be the level of enthusiasm rather a vise head count

Anyway, nice restoration job. I really like the bare metal look of your interesting vise!

Taumac,
you won't regret that versa vise, especially for that price. A base is not hard to fab up. I have found them to be super for all kind of moderate shop work. As the name implies, they are unequaled for versatility and speed of positioning

Vise and stand for $75

I was first to respond to a C/L ad for a Reed 406r with stand.
A great big thank you to JZiggy for the tip.
Yeah, I had to drive 60 miles each way but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
This is how it looks after a quick wash down with my little electric pressure washer.
