It's so cold they asked us to turn our heat down to 65, they had a breakdown at a natural gas distribution station, and are afraid we are going to run out of gas in my area... -13 and dropping.

The current situation. I'll still take this over a Florida summer.

You must have received the same alert on your cell phone from Consumers Enegry that I got. I was really surprised as I thought only Federal government as well amber alert for missing children had access to send such an alert.

gman --- I've been following the "Polar Vortex" on the Weather Channel...

I have a question, only someone with firsthand knowledge, can answer...

Ready???

Wait for it...

WHAT IS SNOW???

Those of us, living on the Emerald Coast of the Gulf of Mexico, aren't familiar with that word...

What does it do???...:lol_hitti

What is it for???...:bounce:

Why do you need it???...:headscrat

Please answer these questions, because someone of my advanced state of decrepitude, has little empty spots in my grey matter, that need filling...

Thanks for your help...:evil::lol:

RB already summarized the answer nicely before I saw your post. But since you asked me, I will more or less give you the same answer and add some more to it.

It seems everyone no matter where they live, one way or another, have to pay their dues to Mother Nature! Now personally despite of all of this I still take the snow over hurricanes, floods, fires, mudslides, droughts, excessive heat, earthquakes, bad air quality, tornados! So it seems over all Mother Nature is in fact too kind to those of us living in the snow belt! :bounce:

Now on a more serious note, yesterday when Smitty expresses his concern and prayers for us, the first thought after my obvious gratitude to him that came to my mind was the recollection that how many times I have had concerns and prayers for my brothers and sisters who live elsewhere in US and who are unfortunately often affected by above natural disasters.

But despite all of this all of us are better off in life in general than 99.9% if not more of the rest of the world.

God Bless America

I know it will probably not effect natural gas, but after reading these energy alerts were happening to a couple of you guys, I lowered my heat. Just in case our grid can send some energy to another grid that can send extra energy to your grid etc.

One other thing I thought of. A lot of your guys are basically stuck because of the brutal cold and not going out and getting those $20 vise deals every couple of days the rest of the country seems to have. Now you can fill up your "war chest" with some extra money you did not spend on cheaper deals and get a lot closer to one of those bucket list vises you want.

At least in this area, we see cold, high winds, and heavy snow pretty frequently from Oct - May, so it's not really much of a change. Business goes on as usual.

It hardens you after a while...I got out gloves and a jacket for the first time this year.

:+1::+1::+1: Jrob.---We got down to 11 above here and that's not bad.---I love the cold, I'm hot natured to my own detriment.---It's hot and humid here in the summer and I'm held hostage in my house because of it.---In the winter I can put on as much as needed to be comfortable, but if I lived in Florida I would have to live life in the buff.---And unless they have relaxed their standards, I'm thinking that Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc. all still frown a little when one shows up at Walmart or Home Depot or Golden Corral purely in the buff.---But that's just the way it would have to be.

You can all come to California if you can stomach the politics and the taxes:

13.3% state income tax
9.75% sales tax
$12,000 per year property tax(and only because I bought in 1992)
$3300 per month medical insurance (for three)

But the weather is mild right now.

Holy ****! Kenc you have my sympathy. Here in Florida:

No state taxes

7.5% sales tax

$375 a year property tax (2 acres and 1400 sq. Ft. Home bought in 1986). In the country, not a mansion but I like it

$180 a month BCBS for me and my two kids

Well that hurts. I can't imagine it'll get any better with companies leaving CA for greener (business friendly) pastures. I would assume that the taxes are likely to just increase for private citizens to compensate for those losses. :(

WOW, no wonder everyone lives in Florida. Property taxes in Central Texas are also ridiculous. Not to mention everything else. I am surprised because it seems so many people retire to Florida that I expected the same problems that happened around here - way overcrowding brought way higher prices for everything. *I do not live in an exclusive area but our ENTIRE town has a homeowner/land owner fee they keep raising (this is in addition to the property tax). Lots of people move here after everyone keeps telling them how great it is, but a lot of people leave when $$$ reality sets in. *They disguise a lot of the costs to make it appear not so expensive I guess.

One other thing worth mentioning - we do not get the value break other areas get for things being under valued tax wise. The last two houses I sold, I could not get the listed HIGH tax value for the house that I had been paying taxes on for years. If a house in this area, no matter how much nicer it is, sells for more money then yours, they raise your tax to the same square foot price? Around here, buying one of the lesser houses in the area is pretty stupid. My property taxes have almost doubled in the last 5 years.

I hate to brag, but we have a 1 bedroom house on two acres and are paying a LOT more per MONTH property tax than Mike W is paying for a whole YEAR in Florida. I am not going to write the amount in case a tax person in this area reads this and decides they need to raise my taxes even more...

It was zero degrees F this morning when I left for work, and I had left my work boots out in the (unheated) garage all night. I was thinking that it might be a good time to finally put on some wool socks. This thought crossed my mind after I had already left the house of course...

I'm dying to get out of here myself. I just paid registration for my 12 yr old dual sport motorcycle and it was $128 this year. When I bought the bike in 2008 (i bought it used, its a 2006 model) it was $84. Vehicle registration usually decreases as time goes on; however, mine has increased more than 50%. My 12 yr old Ram 3500 truck is $494 each year! It's nice out here, but one can only pay so much in taxes and fees before the burden becomes too much to take.

This is a great time to chime in and mention how much I love AZ. I grew up in The People's Republic of California but have lived in AZ for 25 years now.

No hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, snow (where I live in AZ), blizzards or digging myself out of my driveway.

I'll take the dry heat in summer all day long in lieu of even the chance of one of the above. Now yes it does get to 128 degrees here on occasion in July and August and sometimes it doesn't drop below 100 degrees all night plus we are generally the hottest spot in the country for those months as well, but we have air conditioning and a beautiful lake to use and enjoy every day.

I've been in Texas and Oklahoma when it's been 90-100 degrees there and with the humidity it is beyond miserable. You can go outside here when it's 110-120 degrees and it's just hot. You need lots of water and a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops but it's not that bad. The only thing I complain about a bit are dry skin and how hot my garage gets. Someday I'll be glad to pay more on my electric bill to have an air conditioned garage and I'll be able to work out there year round. Of course lotion and skin moisturizing products sell well here in the desert southwest.

IMHO, it's paradise here and the lesser of all other evils. Probably the reason that our population doubles between November and April with "snowbirds" from everywhere from Alaska to Canada to Minnesota.

Well, I had a near-Smitty level lunchtime score today! 4" Wilton Bullet for $40!

Check out these jaws! Based on the digs in the static jaw tower though I have to assume these are replacements?

Wow, great deal on that Wilton. Smitty would be proud.

Regarding Arizona, the thing that worries me about AZ is the same thing I worry about Southern NV - where's the water coming from long term? Not sure about Az, but in So NV lake mead is 40ft low and the Colorado river is getting lower and lower.

FINALLY someone else has noticed that the temperature numbers might be similar, but it is the Humidity that makes it miserable here in the summer. I keep smiling when I hear people up north talk about hot weather. Just like most of us down here not understanding the cold, most people up north do not really understand the humid heat. We affectionately call it "the oven" . Next time in the month of August when you just walk from your air conditioned house to the air conditioned car, ask yourself - do I need to take another shower? If the answer is no you are probably not in Texas. :FIREdevil

Hard to tell much about it, the image is so small. You might post a higher resolution photo if you have it. It is Chicago or Shiller Park?

Looks like a 3.5" version to me. Shorter jaw towers but still "fat". The 3" Wilton I have looks decidedly more lean than the 3.5".

Hard to tell from that pic but could it be the 4" that Mayer scored this afternoon for $40?

Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk

Definitely not. The ad I found had much different photos.

Hello again from the UK!

So... On the left is a perfectly suitable 4" modern vice from IRWIN, does everything I could need!

On the right is what £40, a well timed visit to the salvage yard and being a member of GJ gets you......

Samsonia model J, with quick release.

Made this fine county of Yorkshire, England. [emoji38]

Nice Samsonia, decent size, looks not too worn out, made of ductile cast so pretty much as strong as any British vice bar a few very rare ones and for a decent price.

Don't know Russell on where it was made. It wasn't what was being advertised so just in the background. I'll email you with details. I'm not going to pursue it.

While to be honest I know near zero about most British vices, you have three good things going here
1- Your Samsonia appears to be in very good shape
2- It even says so on the vice that this vise is PERFECT , so it must be good :bounce:
3- Most importantly it has the stamp of approval from Dutch, who is one of the GJ's British resident vise experts.

If you do choose to restore it, please post some after restoration photos.

Nice score!

Wasn’t me.
On the scale of suckage, a 450SJ for $45 outscores my 406r for $75 by a long shot. :)

I wonder how many calls that guy got before he yanked the ad from C/L ?
Keep your eyes open on that deal. It might be re listed soon for a much higher price. That’s a super desirable model so it might go for 10X the money.
