Sale this morning I picked these up; Proto Impacts 3pc Set of 3/4dr and some 1/2dr's. Thin wrench, old-school Craftsman locking pliers, some side protectors for your glasses and a rusty old open head ratchet I'm going to try and save!

I just got back from an estate sale. Slim pickings, but I did find an almost brand-new Craftsman 19" Spiral Ratchet screwdriver in the original box with the original price tag still on it---$7.99. I bought it for $3, which is not too bad. The action is perfectly smooth, and I can almost see myself using this.:)

Estate sale today. Not many sales up to now, so it was very crowded despite being way out in the country.

First photo is Long-C Craftsman Circle-H 1/2" drive.

Second photo is Long-C Craftsman Circle-H 3.8" drive.

Third photo is other stuff, a stamped spark plug socket, older SK 15/16 deep 1/2 drive socket, Pexto wire forming pliers, Channellock side cutters, Proto Los Angeles 9/16 angle wrench, and a Challenger screwdriver.

Fourth photo is a set of Power-Kraft combination wrenches. 5/8 up to 1-1/8, missing the 3/4, which I already have. I may have to substitute a couple of Barcalo-branded wrenches to complete a set from 5/16 to 1-1/8, but not many.

They priced the wrenches higher because they were shiny, but I made up for that with the Craftsman!

I've been doing my best to get rid of things rather than acquire more, but I never learn. Got back into the swing of things last week and picked up some neat things for $30:

Norlund Hudson Bay Axe (been looking for one in the wild for years, about had kittens when I found one for $6 with most of the original sticker on the head)
Shapleigh hardware hewing / broad axe
Lot of ATF / motor / bar and chain oil
Large copper pot / container (couldn't pass it up for $2 as scrap, but now the wife wants to keep it)
Bunch of misc. hardware, electrical, and plumbing items

Had to work on Mardi Gras but took a long lunch to pick up a $200 truck load of fun. Highlights include:

Delta Milwaukee 6x48 belt sander (never seen one with a fence before, might have to keep that)
Delta Milwaukee Homecraft 10" bandsaw
NIB "Dynamic Nutcracker"
Arrow wood stove with piping
Harbor Freight dust collector
Jet dust collector
Baldor 1022w grinder
Small import drill press
Machinist box, rough bottom but had plenty of goodies inside
Bunch of other random goodies

I'm a little bummed that the big Baldor looks to be DOA but everything else is in working order so I can't complain.

I forgot about a Hobart meat slicer I picked up and still have to figure out what to do with. I bought it mostly for the base but am having second thoughts about splitting them up. Plenty of surface rust but seems to all be there and runs. It has a serial number but no model number. I can't find any information about this model anywhere online. Anybody know anything about these?

Also, pictures of the nut cracker and the tap set. I'm almost too scared to use taps this small.

Went back to the estate sale I hit Wed because it's about 10 min from my home. I dug thru 5 or 6 boxes of files, drivers, junk and in the bottom of the last box I found all 5 of these tools. And it was 25% off today. Snap-On 1/2" combo, Snap-On #34 pliers, Plomb WF-17 4" 3/8" ext, Hazet 300 chrome-vanadium DOE wrench, some kind (?) of nice brush, 1958 Farmer's Pocket Ledger, The Band Saw Handbook by Mark Duginske, Principles of Woodworking by Holtrop & Hjorth (1961) , Woodwork Visualized (For the woodshop teacher, 1950) & General Woodworking textbook (1950s). Set me back $11. The old woodworking books are really cool as is the Farmer's pocket ledger. Not a Hazet collector so any info you guys could provide would be cool. I don't suppose it was part of a set or were these also available individually? Trades welcomed.

Today I ventured out with two intended stops, a garage sale and estate sale. Both turned out to be a flop in the tool department, however, thanks to signs posted, I ran into two other yard sales in my travels that paid off.

One of the sales was yet another right around the corner. I could have walked over had I not already been in the car.

At the first stop I picked up 7 light bulbs, packing tape, 2 mini maglites, a Channellock, Irwin razor, and two unmarked body hammers. One has a Stanley handle.

The other chance stop took me way off course from where I was headed. There was a sign on the main route that read SALE SALE. I almost wrote it off but decided to turn the car around thinking you never know.

Well, it took me in the wrong direction, easily 3 or 4 miles. I started saying where is this darn sale anyway.

When I got there I was quite happy to see some tools! First I hit the junk box, and found a good Dunlap scraper. Then went to the good table. Too bad I didn’t know about this sale and wasted time elsewhere first.

After a little negotiating, I wound up with the following.

Dunlap scraper
Snap On 3/8 spinner handle
Snap On 3/8 wobble extension
Snap On 10mm head bolt socket
Snap On vintage tiny saw
Blue Point line wrench
S-K snap ring pliers
Mac open end line wrench
Bonney slide bar
Bonney Alligator wrench

I added a couple pics of the Bonney wrench because there was some discussion about gator wrenches recently.

Nice! Thanks. And yup, that's a fit. A couple Marks newer than my tripod, but they were standard size for many, many years. Note that it's painted black over brass, just like the tripod hardware.

Large copper pot / container (couldn't pass it up for $2 as scrap, but now the wife wants to keep it)
Speaking of buckets, and wives... this one, spotted at my Thursday flea market, made me snort out loud!

We went to three sales today and found a few items at each one. The first sale was in Berkeley and had a few adjustable wrenches plus an amber handle S-K spinner I had been looking for. The second sale was in San Leandro and had a few tools including a spray bombed 1943 14” Ridgid pipe wrench. The last sale was in Martinez and had plenty of pliers and a partial Challenger set with a carry box. The last pictures are some of the tools cleaned up.

Story of my life brother. Nice find on the Snap-on 3/8s spinner. I have one and it is one of my most used tools.

Anyone know anything about the Snap-On pliers I found today? Got #34 on the inside of the handle, inside the other handle is the Snap-On name. They are 4-1/2" long. I can't find them via google. They are real nice. Just curious.

Vacuum-Grip. Not early. Probably 60's or so. In the beginning (1920's), Snap-on had a company called Forged Steel Products in Pennsylvania make their pliers. FPS made pliers trademarked "Vacuum-Grip" due to the suction cup looking knurling. Later (I can dig up the exact date if you really care...), 1940 or so, they merged. Literally. AA and others report that Snap-on bought FPS but that's not the case. Snap-on was actually in financial distress after the Crash. The founder and president of CEO of FPS became a VP at Snap-on and eventually the CEO and Pres of Snap-on.

Those are impeccable.

Thanks Lugz. 60's huh? Wow! That's a lot older than I expected and they look great to be that old. I'm surprised that a google search didn't show any of these. Do you know if there's a vintage GJ Snap-On thread?

It might be earlier. No earlier than 1953 though with that logo. And the really early ones say FPS and Vacuum Grip near the pivot. I have several. And yes, there is a Snap-on thread on the vintage board. It's active on page 1 right now. EDIT: Also, the Collecting Snap-on site has a fairly decent write-up on Vacuum-Grip.

Okay. Thanks for the info on Collecting Snap-on site. From what I can tell these are General Use Pliers 35 Series...No 34 General Use Pliers 4 ½ inch 1935 -1953. This info is from the Pliers section of the site. A general search of the site produced appx 7 catalog hits one of which was from 1978. The catalog drawing looks correct. I registered on the site and will try to get more specific info this weekend. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction Lugz. Makes them just a little cooler that they don't show up on the web much. :)

So a couple of estate sales risked the rain and opened anyway today, AND I manged to slip out for a bit to go to both.

First on the guy was an upholsterer, and I picked up a couple of CB Osborne, staple pullers - good ones! different angles for the pull. A True Temper lathe hatchet (going to my son), Wiss heavy scissors, a mini box cutter suitable for a key chain, A couple of Cheese boxes (SWMBO wanted one, but I kept the finger jointed one...)

attachment.php

I also picked up two small tents, one is a single pole Boy scout tent, and the other is a pair of shelter halves and the wood folding poles were with it. (I've only ever seen the 3 piece socketed poles...) Pics of the rest tomorrow, (work and rain...) the aluminum pole you see is I believe for the boy scout tent. sort of an early canvas tarp tent if I see the pic on the bag right... I would love to find an half dozen of these nesting, stacking aluminum poles!

The orange stakes are aluminum, their are eight total of the wood stakes, (not sure of those go to the shelter halves or the tarp tent - I'm thinking the army shelter halves). The wire stakes aren't bad but I need to straighten three of them.

The second Sale was even better! I spotted this older Kennedy box an its pretty full of stuff, I had a handful of tools and looked through and noticed the $30 price for the box, and offered $20 including the tools I had in my hand - Accepted!

It's got the 30's style square corners on the lid, and its GREEN! War box? :dunno: the handle is metal however, NOT leather... :headscrat

the stuff inside was a mixed bag: some machinist, some junk, some entertaining (the guys first name was Herman, we have
the birth and death dates of presumably his wife or mother, from a prayer card, and an article for a son or nephew, or possibly brother becoming an ordained Franciscan priest...), and some just oddly out of place...

For a machinist box, this waa about the dirtiest tools I've ever seen... I got less grease on my hands changing the axle bearing and brake on one side of my DD last week...

Clamping and setup bars, A BEAT Starrett Mic, (one end ground - for clearance? :dunno: ), Union Square set and one part from another set, Lufkin and Craftsman calipers/dividers, some bars for the setup a Starrett speed indicator, A start dial indicator missing the pointer, (and the lens is yellowed and (heat?) curved), The disk in interesting:

I believe this to be the die that stamps the instructions into the top of a 1 lb Folgers coffee can! I think the countersunk hols were the mounting holes?

A box full of taps, tap handles, Allens, and other machine shop tooling, Lufkin folding ruler, a home made linkage, cheap calipers and compass, tooling brackets, etc.

More to come!

And continued:

From the red handled tool down was what I had in my hand that I added to the box. The red handled thing is an early jar opening handle. m Channelock needle nose, small plies, brass clip and old keys, and wood handled min driver.

From the box: Ancient safety glasses, cheap Slaymaker lock, some other keys, a couple of magnifiers in the middle. one I'm making a case for to replace the pocket magnifier I lost a couple of years ago, A box for a Williams ramp sight, (the replaced sight is in the box...), some drivers and picks, a pen for dykem, a bearing scraper, some stones and some watchmakers abrasive in a glass jar (yellow label), a tube of Yankee drill bits, three82 degree countersinks...

A couple of files, tree reamers, a stack of stamped but decent stamped wrenches, Starrett and Lufkin info cards, NOS ear plugs, an magnet stick

Taps and an extractor

Centering pattern punches, drills, mil cutters, and some parting cutters

And a bunch of Lathe cutters. I think he was mostly a lathe operator.

Outlaw, nice snag on the tool box full of stuff. The few that I've picked up have always been fascinating studies of their previous owners.

Out of curiosity: how do you record such finds in your tool tracker spreadsheet? Do you enter the big items individually, and then lump together "Tooling" as one entry and value?

Outlaw,
That is quite a haul. I have a couple of those green boxes but Kennedy used leather handles until around 1949 so they are postwar.

Rained out today at the flea market today. It started pouring as it opened and most sellers immediately started packing up. I checked out the 5 vendors that were sticking it out. Only tool I saw was an old and quite large Stahwille pipe cutter that had seen better days. Hopefully better luck in a few weeks.

Thanks Guys!

Yeah Don the handle threw me, coupled to the square top lid... I thought those lids went round much earlier.

BB My tool inventory is incomplete, lot of things won't hit it till I can sit and sort the details. (I STILL haven't done Screwdrivers for instance, but I DID do drill bits - but as consumables, that's an effort in futility...)

The buys get documented in my diary along with what I spent as the days finds. something like the contents of this tool box wasn't detailed, but I may specifically doc some of the more significant pieces like maybe say the Folger's die and the Williams sight box, but most of this one was consumables, - even the "precision" tools were not massively significant taking into consideration the condition of the mic and dial indicator

Both lists are in Excel, and I've searched the diary for a particular item, say when I bought a vise or something, and can from that use the date to find the pics, since those are all in dated folders.

All I track on the inventory is what I spent (or estimate for stuff I bought before I started the inventory) and estimated replacement value. This is how I know I'm sitting on about 10% cost to replacement value for my tools on average. Some are incredibly cheap and some I paid retail...

Dave, that's the same metal glasses case the old safety glasses were in! no Snap on decal on mine, and yours in in much better shape.

Hit that local estate sale again this morning (3rd time in 4 days). Picked up a Stanley No 3 plane that will clean up nicely, vintage Jorgenson clamps - an f-style and two 3" C-clamps and a funnel with a screen which I'm going to use when putting my Evapo-rust back after use.

Can someone tell me about this old burner? It's still available and I'm thinking about going back for it. Do these have any resell value? What were they used for and does anyone recognize the brand.

Outlaw There's a 200A but it isn't pristine shape. I'm just not a lantern guy. What's it worth?

Thanks guys!

I'm putting stuff from yesterday away and sorted through the flat box of bits and pieces so it went from this:

attachment.php

to this:

attachment.php

Mostly consumables. The long punch and tapered pin will go into my "lantern" tools for repairing lanterns and stoves. I don't thing the pin is technically a tool, but pin stock for tapered pins, but it will be handy for taking dings out of small tube ends.

The rest is getting properly "stocked"

TX, both the fire pot and the Lantern are worth getting if you can keep the prices out of stupid range. The yellow framed decal indicates older ( 60's? not up on decal nuances per year...)

Anywhere close to $20 and I'm buying them (can use condition to negotiate - check the pump and if its not making pressure, mention it. chips in the enameled vent are not repairable short of sending then in to be re-porcelainized, and that's not cheap...

If they ARE making pressure, are they holding it (loosen the cap if you can after pumping if it hisses that's a good sign) and lastly, check the bottom and inside the tank for major rust, if its bad, and the glass is original its still worth getting as a parts lantern

The fire pot would likely be worth more if it were a name brand like Coleman or AGM. Those were used for melting lead back when sewer pile runs were cast iron and they used oakum and lead to seal them with.

Still VERY useful for cooking with (ever had deep fried turkey? ), and fairly easy to get or make pump leathers and he like if needed.

Coleman lanterns on Eprey are getting to stupid money generally, and while 200a's are not at the top of the list, they are FAR from the bottom.

I like the single mantle lanterns better than the doubles personally, and don't see much if any difference in the light produced. my 82 year old 242 single is almost always the brightest in the camp. More fuel efficient too.

I keep Two 200's in a closet ready to go for emergency lighting. This is besides my 4, no 5 now, main camping lanterns and the collection...

Outlaw, saw two red lanterns in a box at a rummage sale today. Thought of you instantly. Sadly they looked good from far but were far from good. Big China stamp on the top of each!

Went back to that sale around the corner as they said they might be bringing more tools today. Only new things were a Snap On steering wheel puller with Thorsen socket stuck to it, and Stanley Rule and Level box scraper that CRSINMICH identified in the hand plane thread.

Hit up another yard sale with tools. Found what’s left of a Newbould wood chisel, an Irwin Bell Sytem Phillips, tiny Channellock pliers, Utica cutters, Proto nut driver, 8 inch Bemis & Call curved adjustable.

Finally made my way to a rummage sale that I’d forgotten about. Found a brand new shadow box for 2 bucks. Not sure which way to go with it, endless possibilities.
Also a set of five Proto 1/2” deep wells, Tiger adjustable in rough shape, a Pexto adjustable, and decent Buck chisel.

Finally no rain and a sale worth going to. My adult son has gotten the used tool bug and wanted to go to his first estate sale. It was two small outbuildings from a hotrodder. All tools and garage wall art/signs (mostly repros but some original).

We got there about two hours early and were numbers 2 & 3 on the list. He wanted to buy one of the two craftsman stacks in the photos but got distracted by a table of wrenches just inside the door and both tool chests got scooped from under him, lol.

I ended up with a couple of vintage NE drag race flyers, a repro but nice metal Ford clock that was half price because it didn't work (until I got home and put a battery in it), a 1 1/2" Snap On combo, couple of pullers, etc. and my first CM stainless ratchet. I've never seen one in the wild before. I actually missed it but my son handed it to me and asked, "Do you want this?" For $3? Heck yeah.

Last week I made a final stop at my local Sears before it closes and brought home this two tier "Z rack" for $20. For the last twenty years it's held garments. Now it will hang parts for painting.
