Justin, I had seen that vise for sale too. It "mostly" looks like a Prentiss to me, except for the location of the swivel jaw pin. Edit: although that area looks repaired, so might be a user mod.

That lettering down on the side is very cool.

Well Shift's green is alot prettier especially against the awesome white background of his vise display shelves but in honor of St. Paddy's day I gathered my three green vises up for a pic.

The Rock Island is still in "as found" condition. The Parker 433 1/2A was restored by me and the Athol 614 was one of Crotalusatrox first restorations. He graciously gave it to me when I found and picked up a Reed 406 for him.ef31085e8e9a4dc27d1a7123a12f0023.jpg

I was waiting for you to show up with a green vise. I didn’t want to post this pic of one of yours that I archived until after you showed up. Your work is inspirational.

I would say your right, you can kind of make out a couple letters of Dawn and the numbers 130 or 150 (5" or 6"). It looks like a Dawn.
The Fortis offset which was the British made version was a left handed offset. So its not one of those.
Someone got a good deal on that.

Hello,

I am trying to research a vise I have that is in need of some new Jaws

The Vise is marked:

Sawyer Tool C

Oswego, NY

USA

on one flat and then

OSWEGO

26

I can get more info photos and then try to figure out how to post them. I have no hosting site.

The Jaw is a 6 in wide
The jaw face is 1 7/8 inch tall.
There is a positive step that is 7/8 tall with 1/2 inch above and below the step.
the step is 1/4 inch deep and holes are 3 3/4 inch center to center
The thickness of the jaws needs to be at least 1/4 thick at the thickness of the step and 1/2 inch thick top and bottom. There is a 1/2 in gap when the vise hits the stops

I do not know if I am restoring this vise to anything other than usable. It has been ground on and welded on so lots of work to restore the profile on the tops of the jaws. I do need to tear it down and clean it up and grease it good. Who knows maybe I can paint it to protect it.

I can email the photo I have and any future photos if anyone is interested.

Rml, after you have made 5 posts you can post pictures on this site.---The guys here can give you a lot better assessment of the abuse your vise has sustained and how to remedy it if they can see a pic of the vise, that way you won't have to email to every individual here.---Some of the fellows will be glad to walk you through the process of posting pics.---Welcome by the way.

Oh and a 6'' Sawyer is definitely worth repairing.---A big Sawyer garners a lot of intrest.

rml, too bad, I literally just sold one of those last week ... Sorry I don't have any measurements. Those Oswego 26s sure are beasts, though! Think it weighed more than the Rock Island 577 I also let go. I know someone else here has a 26, I think va.grouseman, so hopefully someone can get you specs.

Trijeff, I sure hope you're making some good money, cause you sure unloading some fine vises.---You had to of made a couple of people happy with those 2 units.
Not bad but not crazy ... both had issues, the 26 in particular. They both went to the same fellow that bought Honza's RI 597 the week before, so that gent has some big boys now for sure and in quick order. From my understanding they are all going to be users and kept unrestored. That it was one buyer, cash, came to my house for pickup in extremely quick fashion and the aforementioned issues plus being 100% completely unrestored all led to him getting a fairly good deal.

EDIT: oh, and the fact I had picked them both up locally for under $100 total didn't hurt, either

I'm a bit new to this. Is $300 a good deal for this 4" 1940's (according to the seller) No. 4 Wilton bullet?

Thanks Shift. Inspirational is not a word my wife associates with me at all, especially with respect to vises, so glad to have an audience of at least one!

I've done some searching and can't seem to find any info on that Yost vise. I'm still not quite sure exactly what it is called. The swivel base is not a tighten down but actually just a quick pull pin with return spring. If anyone happens to have any info or a possible age of it I'd be greatly appreciative.

Well...This is the moment, my tool collecting just grew to include vises.
:)

Thank you @va.grouseman the links are great and my Zee Co is having a soak for a bit while I decide how best to use and than mount it. It does have some good heft to it and I like the low profile.
That said, there are so many more out there I must find

I see that most people don't have their vices mounted (mine isn't either). Does everybody just mount them when needed? (that is my operating model).

I think most people have their "daily drivers" mounted and use them. The other vises that we all seem to accumulate after reading this site for awhile, usually sit around just about anywhere (or should I say everywhere). Some of us have to move them around all the time when we need more work space.

Justin, here is some Yost history sites and one history post by GJ member B100 that might interest you.

I have a 6'' Yost with a swivel jaw like yours, and it has G. M. YOST down on the swivel base where yours has the Yost Meadville P.A..---It is just my opinion but I think these are some of the earliest Yost vises.---Puts them around 1910.---Again, JMO.

B100 had 5 really good vintage Yost ADs on page 554 but they got arrested by Photobucket.

And the Yost timeline posted by B100 on page 731, post 14614

A couple of days late for green vise day but just finished this one yesterday. Columbian 605 M3 painted with Rustoleum 7538 Hunter Green. This one is a gift to a friend that is retiring after 40 years at the end of the month. He's handy and likes to work around the house, this should be a great addition to his shop.

I would think the ONLY reason not to permantly mount a bench vise would be due to real estate constraints....or if the vise is small and easy to manage. With the exception of my drill press vises, all three of my work benches have vises bolted to them.

That Columbian came out great! How did you get the slide so clean looking? Is that a bead blast finish or ???.
It’s a noble thing to do, gifting a vise to a friend on a special occasion. I hope your buddy doesn’t consider it so nice as to never put it to use. Even if he does, it will look great on ANY workbench!

Flashy:
Many of us have more vises than we could possibly use, but have our favorites or merely the most useful mounted for “daily driver” work. I find that a combination vise works the best for my purposes. I have a Wilton C1 mounted up on my main bench. I am planning to mount my 10 inch Abernathy undermount woodworkers vise on my smaller, roll around workbench. Often that kind of vise works best for holding chunks of wood or other objects.
Most of my 75 other vises sit up on shelves. :)

That with an undermount on the end stationary bench brings up all kinds of possibilities. Just another project to drill three more holes.

It started out in nice condition which helps greatly! Medium glass beads, wire wheel on the 4 1/2" grinder and than a coat of wax. This results in clean metal with a "satin" sheen to it.

I hope my friend does not find this vise too "big" to use! I was looking for a 3 1/2" or 4" bullet but this is what I found in time to get it to him. The seller also had another 605 M2 which I picked up. Much rougher shape.
