I have a friend named Prentice whom I'm considering gifting with a big Prentiss vise. I just don't know if he would use it. Regardless, it gives me an excuse for keeping it around.

Yeah, these two were in my watch list and ending today. I was watching purely for entertainment but I have to say, these little buggers have gotten out of hand and barring a garage sale find, out of reach!

I snagged this little guy off of eBay the other day. It’s coming across country and I should have it on Thursday. I can’t wait.526355b5272f25f10bc22f65a7bf05a5.jpg

I've noticed lately that a lot of Prentice vises that I've looked at have that same hole in the rear or are cracked there. Is it me or is this common ? Is it from using it as an anvil ? Dropping it ?

I picked up this Cole Tool MFG of Chicago Hts , Ill No. 11 vise off FB yesterday. I thought it was too cool to pass up. When the weather ever warms up I think I'm going to give this a paint job. Any info on this vise would be helpful.

Does anyone know what the patent no. Is for this Bonney vise. I have a lot of patents downloaded, but have not been able to find this one. Any help would be much appreciated.

Nice one Smitty.

Here's a recent one from eBay for me, already in hand. An unmarked Boley style mini with 1" single screw jaws. Pictured with a Wilton baby for scale. Anybody watching this little unit?---I bid up in that stupid money and it blew by me like I was in reverse.

That Zoomie is setting on a gold mine.

It seems rather common for there to be a crack on the top of the slide. To me it looks like a knit line problem during the casting. From Wikipedia:

In manufacturing, the Weld line or Knit line or Meld line is the line where two flow fronts meet when there is the inability of two or more flow fronts to "knit" together, or "weld", during the molding process. These lines usually occur around holes or obstructions and cause locally weak areas in the molded part.[1] Knit lines are considered molding defects, and occur when the mold or/and material temperatures are set too low: thus the materials will be cold when they meet, so that they do not bond perfectly. This can cause a weak area in the part which can cause breakage when the part is under stress. Weld lines therefore occur during machine start-up, when equilibrium conditions have not been met. Mouldings made in this setting-up period must be rejected.

There are some Prentice vises without cracks (I have one), but there are more with cracks from my observations.

Mine brought the same kind of money a week or two ago. The Pow'rarm base seems to drive up the prices.

Nice little family you’ve got there sandman!
Is the big one a 2 1/2 or a 3?
I have both of those, a 2 and a 2 1/2, but only the “baby” is on a power arm. It’s quite a big jump in overall size between the 2 and the 2 1/2. Most people wouldn’t expect that.

I have a 3" Wilton I'd love to put on one of those bigger powerarms. I've saved a couple pics of that setup and it looks very usable.

Speaking of a 3" Wilton on a powerarm, check out this Offerup listing I just barely missed out on last year. $100 for all 4 vises. Worthy of a screenshot for sure!84e2a8f8d30f84bac6d703bc849f1ad3.jpg

Nice looking collection! What’s the date code on the one to the right of the shiny baby in the top left.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The date stamp on that one is 1-52. The one in the middle row far left is 6-15-64. The rest are not stamped. The one in the front row with the raised anvil is probably the oldest. It is marked on one side PAT PDG.

I found this beautiful Prentiss Bull Dog no. 50 today, it has 3 1/4 “ jaws and weighs in at 22 lbs. The vise is shown in as found condition and is in remarkable shape for 90+/- year old vise. The price tag said $48 so I asked him how much for cash and he said $40, needless to say I couldn’t get the wallet out of my back pocket fast enough.

Your wife’s reaction is probably normal for the wives of most of us as well. :)
That was a great find and an excellent price as well.

I don't know how you find them Smitty.

Up here in Norcal, that would be posted endlessly on CL for $350.

Thanks shift, she’s starting to get used to it.

Re Kenc184
This is a size I’ve always wanted, I really like the smaller vises. I fully expected to see at least $200 on the price tag. I was shocked.
