It looks like it was squished by a press, pretty cool though!

Yeah, they're a bit of a trip - check out the shape of the slide!

It's funny how those are so specific to Australia, wonder why they never caught on here in the states? Wilton sold them for a while. Very practical for working on the end of longer stock.

The Hollands is one of the most eye appealing vises ever made, at least to my eye it is.
Hear is the the one that I was lucky enough to get.
I never miss a chance to post it's picture!!!!

That's probably because the auction doesn't start for another 1 day 3 hours ;)

Here is a mystery for you guys...

I just picked up this “Perfect” vise. Model No.1
3 1/4 inch wide jaws, 7 1/2 pounds
Might this be from the same English company (Parkinson’s) that made mostly woodworking vises marked “Perfect”? The Parkinson’s machinist vises that I found online were enclosed screw models that were similiar to the other English vises, Record and Paramo.

I can’t see any country of origin markings. Maybe some “counterfeiter” just latched onto the “perfect” moniker. :dunno:

Have any of you seen one of these before?

What is the back story on your Hollands, Royce?

It was procured from a auction site, before vises became such a hot commodity.
It was not listed as a offset vise and the pics were so dark, I was not even sure it was a offset vise.
I was and still are plumb tickled when I opened the box to see what a gem it is.
Golly, I'm lucky, every now and again.

You know a Hollands and a Fortis would look real novel setting on each end of a long bench, or a set of book ends, left and right, Yin and Yang.---Kind of look like they were dancing.:D

I looked through the Parkinson’s 1940 catalog and didn’t see a model like this one, their lower end ones resemble Records.

Thanks for looking at your old catalog Thrumcap.
Mine is much lower quality. Lots of slack and wiggle in the slide. The surface “patina” seems to indicate age.

The mystery continues...

It seems like a good time to give these Columbians their day in the sun. The 206 weighs in at 156lbs and the 204 1/2 at 58lbs.

So I see a 4” Wilton listed on Facebook in my area, for under $300 so I make them an offer, they accept and I go pick it up on my way to work. I walked into the garage and immediately I’m thinking to myself “that’s the biggest 4” vise I’ve ever seen”! Well it’s not a 4” Wilton, it’s a 5” Wilton!

So I thought I was getting a good deal on a 4”, but in reality I got a great deal on a 5”! 😁😁

Smitty, nice Columbians.---You're just 6 pipe jaws shy of awsome.

Nice Wilton, Andrew.---5'' is a perfect working size all around.
Thanks VA. I must admit, pipe jaws are my Bermuda Triangle when it comes to vises. They always seem to go missing.

I spent the afternoon restoring an old cast iron Baldor grinder stand. I paired it up with the 206 and it’s remarkably stable. The 31” high stand lowered the vise to a great working height.86c5d47c13c503d82873c1bc06353626.jpg5d3c6814cb99082f86e9af48731a2653.jpg

While back I picked up this American Scale Red Seal 6" bench vise. Oddly it has no number in the casting. I think it is a model 66 from the vise spreadsheet linked photo. The weight is 124 lbs.

It looked like it had potential but the leadscrew nut mating dovetail in the main casting had damage. I wonder if the leadscrew was tightened too much and the resulting force bending the nut mount broke the cast iron. Has anyone seen this before? Sorry I did not get a photo of that part. Usually the handle is designed to bend before this occurs. But on close examination I did see some porosity in the cast iron at the break so it makes be wonder if it was a poor casting.

I guess you could bolt the leadscrew nut in place from the bottom presuming you had it aligned correctly. Has anyone tried this?

My nice neighbor across the street want it bad, even with the damage pointed out to him. So I sold it to him for what I paid for it - $40. I only picked it up figuring someone here could use the parts.

tool_scrounge, I have seen a dove tail broken in the back side because the slider was opened where it was inside the Static then pressure is applied on the Dynamic and with no support on the square slider the nut takes all the stress. Adding a cap screw underneath is one way to fix it. It is what you are comfortable with on what kind of repair you do. Here is a way I fixed a 6-1/2" Parker with broken out dove-tails. Maybe someone else has another method.

Here is the Morgan 160 in its final form. I am pretty happy with how it came out. I am going to be sad to see it go but it needs a new home. Its come along way from the few pounds of blue paint the previous owner was so proud of.

I'm the proud new owner of this beauty and couldn't be happier. Big thanks to Mr Wonderful for making my dream a reality.........john

I think American Scale was producing their stationary vises in the same molds as the swivelers, at least it looks that way in this ad. Both yours and Outlaws may in fact be No. 56's and therefore may not be actually missing their swivel base.

Can't remember 100% but I'm thinking credit for this ad goes to Fierljeppen.2e2b73a04787ecee98a5b70f523fe418.jpg

Nice fix. I'll mention it to my neighbor as he is capable of the repair (and that is one less I need to do).

You are correct- it must be a model 56. I need to find a hanging scale and confirm the weight as I worry my scale might be off

Congratulations on your new vise. Looks to be a very early Morgan Chicago. I'd be afraid to use that one! Welcome to the Morgan club (Morgan 150 is my regular user).
