So, the Portland Swapmeet and PIR swap were over the weekend. I know Provincial has mentioned it, but unless you go you can't understand how bid this is. To use the numbers supplied, the first one has approx. 3500 vendors, while the second covers over 5 miles. And this is mainly auto related. There might be something here or there that doesn't fit, but these are our people. I did the first one on Friday, wandering around with Rileysan and running into Mr.X and Smokeshadow. I used a three wheel bicycle on Saturday to cover the track and infield. So, here's what I found on the first day:

I Proto puller I am doing a deal with Rileysan for, P&C Proto and a Snap-on whitworth socket .50 each, Proto LA ratcheting adaptor $10, Armstrong and Proto 1/4 rats $5 each but both are oddities (odd part number for Armstrong, hole through ratchet head for Proto), Brass spokeshave $5, Proto hammer $5 and Klien telephone relay pliers $1.

Here is a shot of the hole in the Proto head.

A pristine set of Williams DOE's for $20 and a Williams torque wrench for $5.
To be cont.

That Proto ratchet with the hole is probably for installing Hy-lok rivets. The hole in the drive is for an allen wrench to hold the shank of the rivet from turning.

Link to video of power drive installation.

Nice finds!

I figured it was for something like that. Thanks, Provincial.

Not a whole lot of tools stuff there but I snagged a few things at the last auction I went to.

These 2 vices came in a lot with some fence post tops for $5 total. No markings on the unpainted one so if anyone recognizes it let me know, other is a colombian 63 1/2. Also snagged a tap & die set for $2.50, no brand name on it or other identifiers that I can tell other than made in japan. Figured for $2.50 I'd add it to the collection. No pictures of it but also picked up a Kennedy 520 box for $40. Not a great deal on the box but it's about 1/2 full of taps, dies and other machinist tools so it wasn't a terrible deal.

Can you get more pics on the vise in pic No. 2? that MAY be a Colton Patent vise, but I need more details to be sure. if it is, and it's as big as it looks, its the biggest one I've seen. How wide are the jaws?

I have a third similar style, but it's awaiting its resurrection from decay and abuse.

There is a hole about #10 size (might be tapped) in the front of the base an a couple more in the back maybe a bit larger for the one not for the cord. Pretty sure the were factory, but no clue what for.

Wall mounting.

DFA's looks like some of the Eagles metal gooseneck lamps I've seen. Not sure if i saw outlaw's.
Yeah. Found a NIB one on eBay a few years back, probably 1960s, with pen rests as part of the base.

With the weather finally warming up and the sun coming out I decided to skip the tag sales and go ride my bicycle yesterday. Of course I put a little backpack in my pocket "just in case"....

Sure enough I eventually rolled past a pile of stuff on a lawn with everyone's favorite FREE sign. The 1/2in socket rail is what got me to stop, and I'm glad I did. I got a big pile of taps with lots of GTD. One tap holder and a couple of ez outs. A Stanley pop rivet gun, Craftsman nut splitter and screwdriver, a little micrometer, die handle, and an adjustable wrench.

There was also an odd crimper? and an Irwin brace bit. Three leather punches- one Kraueter and two Osborns. A little welding clamp and a Brown and Sharp speed indicator in the original box. And since I was loading up the backpack I grabbed a box of screws and some miscellaneous hardware too.

Not bad for an afternoon of "not going picking.."

Again SoCal pricing here so they weren't $1 a wrench but other than some minor scratches from being in the wrench roll they don't appear used. I gave $50 for the set. The 1-1/4 is truly massive, check the clothes drier for scale. Not sure why all the USA Husky is showing up right now but no complaints here. Really happy I've finally got a complete USA SAE full polished set to use on my old AMCs.

If anyone needs a missing Husky USA wrench all the finds from my post a few weeks ago are going up for sale since I now have this complete set. IMG_20190408_080126559.jpeg

Those wrenches are beautiful! I'd say well worth the $50!!!

As mentioned already, this past weekend was the “Portland Swap Meet”. If you like old cars/trucks/tools, this is the place to be.

Here are the “gems” I found this year. Total spend $50:

An assortment of USA-made C-clamps.

40591096583_fcc6fdf72b_c.jpg

Two are Williams drop forged w/ ACME thread screws.
One is a Brink & Cotton and the other unbranded other than “52”

A Starrett 161-A Parallel clamp.

An Eclipse (Made in England) V-Block with two clamps

An Eclipse (made in England) “171” Automatic Center Punch

A nice little USA-made Palmgren #30 3-Sided Drill Press Vise

40591096283_0caf046707_c.jpg

A nice assortment of Grobet, Osberg, and USA-made Simonds files

A really old Maydole tiny (2oz) jewelers ball-peen hammer. I don’t know why, but I just love this thing!!!

Proto puller I am doing a deal with Rileysan

A proto puller was on my list of stuff to look for at the swapmeet this year. Looks like you beat me to it. I didn't see ANY... but I also don't have the keenest eye.

Very nice, Bill! And, it continues my theory that finding V-Blocks in the wild is like shoes in the middle of the road! You never seem to see them in pairs! There's always just one - making you wonder, 'Where is the other shoe/drill block?!'

BUT I did get the clamp from the missing v-block. I got excited at first because I saw two v-blocks next to each other from a distance. They ended up being different sizes and not a matched pair, though.
For my use purposes, the single one is sufficient... but it does make you wonder, where does the other go?

I think I found it last weekend. I'll post the latest tonight.

YouInReverse - You **** on that massive score. :shocking: I know most on this thread are more interested in the old and unusual but as someone looking for users and not cabinet queens, that haul for $300 really activates my almonds. Just the specialty kits alone would be a good deal at that price.

Those belt buckles show up by the bucket load in about every bizarre in Afghanistan so they were definitely issue items in the 70s. As far as the span of issue who knows. The Soviets weren't big on updating minor items so I'd say it has a broad range.

Seriously! Clamps are hard to get too! I probably have a dozen or so Vee Blocks, and probably half or more were singles, and only a few have clamps, and I think I have a couple of orphan clamps that I don't have the blocks for...

This is small, but it's from the free pile at a recent yard sale - a little vial with drill points for a Millers Falls push drill. The label says:

ONE SET NO. 401
NEW STYLE DRILL POINTS
Made in U.S.A. by
MILLERS FALLS CO., GREENFIELD, MASS.

attachment.php

I have a Millers Falls push drill that's missing the points, so I was happy to find this.

Report back on a find from a few weeks ago where I picked up a nice Coleman 242 with the original globe from 1947. Unfortunately the tank was heavily rusted and just shaking the loose crud out a hole opened up in the bottom.

I had a brass fount from a Canadian mod 200 (1961) leftover from another project I went a different way on, and I Frankensteined the two together. the brass fount holds 4 more oz. of fuel, so add at least an hour to the run time.

Outlaw, Nice mod! That is one great looking lantern. I have been looking for one of the brass fount models for a while. I hope to find the coveted seafoam colored one.

Thanks!

Most/all of the brass ones were painted, ir plated, and it's easier to find them "Made in Canada" post WWII. This fount is Canadian from 1961

I’ve been lurking on this thread for awhile - always in awe of the deals you guys seem to turn up. Last Saturday an estate sale sign spotted on the way to work was underwhelming except for a low table scattered with (mostly) ****. I was able to pluck out a few gems however... 84e5f8aa654e39b5ae8c61ad9874fefe.jpg
$5 for the lot and I didn’t try to haggle. Not sure what was the best of the lot between the near new B&S thread pitch gage and the incomplete Indestro 1/4 drive socket “set”. The little Trimo was also in great condition.

I'll try to get more pictures tomorrow night after work. It's not very big, about the same size as the columbian 63 1/2

bmwrd0 - thanks for the vintage info. Given that - and the fact it was kept in its box, it looked almost new. A little carmalized oil on most of the leaves came off readily with a liberal shot of LPS1 and five minutes of elbow grease. The layout tool intrigues me - a quick web search came up empty. Oddly enough, it looks fairly well used.

Combination bevel. Starrett makes one, the no. 49

I wanted one of those B&S thread gages but I found a screaming deal on a General Tool USA model that looks similar. Sure, why not? Except when you opened it you couldn't pull just one leaf. They all came out.

Took it apart, stoned every leaf on both sides (burr on threads causing them to stick to one another), and some leaves needing file/pencil grinder work as well. Probably 2-3 hours of work. I should have got the B&S. :lol_hitti

Right you are. I have one exactly like it (minus the holes drilled in the "anvil" and base!). it's supposed to be secured by a bolt with its head running in a T-slot in the base - not visible from this angle.

Yep it's a giant among Coltons - 3" jaws, weighs a staggering 6 lbs!!

Well, JM, we say we want ALL finds, big and small! I think it helps to manage expectations. Most folks don't find huge You-**** hauls or deals. Many times, it's just basic base hits.

Found on Facebook Marketplace a cheap Craftsman two drawer toolbox with tools for $70. I knew I didn't want the toolbox and most of the visible tools appeared to be store brands and maybe Harbor Freight type stuff, but there were a few that looked interesting so after the box was listed for a few weeks I offered $35 and a few days later they accepted, "just want it gone". It was a hour drive round-trip in city traffic.

I'm not even sure the two-drawer toolbox is really a Craftsman since it light metal and only has a vinyl sticker for the Craftsman logo. It was so stuffed with tools the drawers didn't work and the little 18" wide box weighed a ton, so I decided to weigh it when I got home and it was 68 pounds!

After getting the tools out, sorted, and a basic cleaning there were well over 200 piece, a lot of junk as expected but quite a lot of USA Craftsman and other USA brands, and just a few rusty vintage tools that I soaked in vinegar for a couple of days

Detailed full size pictures here

All in all I'm not sure the work involved in the cleaning and sorting was worth it but you win some you lose some.

Pictures attached here in the post are the USA Craftsman Sockets and Wrenches, some oddball items, and a few vintage items including a 1/2 drive Bonney Ratchet, Dearborn-Malott wrench, JH Williams adjustable, and maybe an Indestro (Drop Forged Select Steel) and one DOE labeled Made in West Germany.

This was a lot of work, might pass on the next "box of old tools" I come across! :headscrat

To make it easier, here are the rest of the pictures of the less interesting contents, just to see the scale of number of items!

I thought the impact sockets were going to be a good item, they were covered in rust so they got a two day soak in vinegar and light brushing.

Turns out one was a 32mm NAPA but the rest were Performance Tools (PT) brand. There is an O2 sensor removal tool and in there and on the baking sheet with the deep sockets there is a game token marked "no cash value" like most of the tools. ;-)

I snagged this Bonney roll cab from the local recycling yard today. Straight as an arrow, with key. It baffles the mind to think about why someone would scrap a box like this. Apparently, if I had been a day or two sooner, I could have had the top box as well... :(
