It's been many moons since my last vise purchase, and today i nearly tripped over this $5 Taskmaster 5. A dollar per inch? Not bad, eh? Of course while researching it the first hit was Mark in Indiana's rebuild from years ago....

attachment.php

Mine is Not as pretty as his though.

All:

Here's a Taskmaster 4" vise that I finished last night. The vise was manufactured in India. However, it seems to have high quality as far as the overall original design and build.
Here are some specifications:
`Jaw size info;
Jaw size = 4".
Opening >5"
Depth = 2-3/4"
`Swivel base with 360° rotation and wedge lock.
Weight = 35#.

In all of the Taskmaster pictures that I've seen on the web, I've never seen one with a dust cap on the back end, like the Wilton Bullets. I was able to find a suitable electrical knock-out cover to solve that problem.

Here are some pictures:
1st. Picture; Before the restoration.
2nd. Picture; The naked vise body. I was surprised that there was no Bondo.
The rest of the pictures are of the finished restoration.

One question: Does anyone have a catalogue page or any other information about this vise? Original manufacture? Date of manufacture? Anything would be appreciated.

I thought I had one, but Mine is a No. 32 also....

attachment.php

Picked this little guy up, has anyone seen one of these? It’s a Parker No. 30, I’ve seen 31 and 32 but never one of these.

It’s a real heavyweight coming in at 9.5 lbs with 2 5/8” jaw width. One of the pictures it is sitting next to a Wilton 4.5” vise just for scale! It’s in perfect condition, even the serrated jaws are still perfect. To be honest I’m not sure it’s ever been mounted to a bench.. I’ve never seen a smaller Parker in my travels so I had to ****** it up!

Since I'm in a posting mood, I figure I woud take the time to let CRSINMICH know that the lovely Versa Vise did make it past TSA snuggly in my checked bag. I have yet to mount it, but am reminded of your friendship everytime I see it. It wouldn't surprise me if you were prepping for a Tusday estate sale or some other mid-week deal-o-rama for tomorrow. I hope your recovery was speedy and you soon come back to The Vises of GJ to share your wealth of knowledge along with your quick patent research skills.

All,
Please pardon my lack of posting during my winter hibernation, but I am getting back into a groove along with this blissful weather.

DANG Rev! I'm happy getting Bs and you're definitely making a whole new grading scale. When you turn to woodwork the vise world will not be the same.

Smitty has been quiet, too quiet ... sorta makes me think that he's on the road and we are going to be seeing a new gem or two posted on here pretty shortly

I’ve been busy on two fronts. Preparing for out of town guests that are coming to visit the forge and googling purple Barracudas from back in the day in anticipation of your next release.

I just finished cleaning up my Perfect vise. In case you are still looking for your “Perfect” vise, here is a picture of one. :)

I’m still in the dark as to the manufacturer. As you can see, it’s a model with the dynamic in the back.

Before and after pics. It got a hot bath in Simple Green for about 6 hours. The old paint spatters and decades of crud just rinsed right off aided by a small brush. After thorough drying, I warmed it up with a propane torch and rubbed on some BLO. The warm iron seems to absorb the BLO more easily.

Jeff:. I think a guy would have to be plum crazy to paint a vise purple. :)

Pretty sure that guy is a buddy of Andrew / blacksmith tools guy (whom I believe is also on here). Adam Booth (abom79) has acquired a number of 8" reeds recently.

I messaged him to see if he would sell the 208, no luck, not for sale. Adam Booth is a lucky mofo, 3 8” Reeds..

Probably a bit big for jewelry making TJ, but the color is right! [emoji38]
Sadly, the one that would probably be perfect is staying put for now 704d12aeb42e7c1656051bab7cd4d633.jpg

I was being facetious about the 208.---Only someone like Matchless would put a prize like that up for auction.---And figuring the odds, not happening.---I feel the same way about my 208.---I've had several offers, and I know if I sell it, what's the odds of finding another nice one.---And if I do I won't get it as cheap as what I paid for the one I have now.---And the one featured on eBay looks to be a nice one.

Remember Outlaw's signature.--------("It never hurts to ask"), but probably a waste of time.

I recently picked up an amazing tool makers vise. The vise uses a cam system to operate the jaw clamping motion. The vise has a very nice lapped dovetail on which the moving jaw slides on.
The whole vise is parallel and square to within .0002. I’ve never used but have held the other screwless style but after fiddling with this design
I believe this to be a much more user friendly design. It’s really kind of disappointing the original creator didn’t mark his creation as he did a fabulous job on the design and execution.

I have tried my hand at making a precision vise and let’s say I believe it to be far harder then I first thought and takes a considerable amount of time.

Yeah, boy Rusty, the craftsmanship there is unbelieveable. So well thought out, created and assembled. Like Kevin, whoever made that is an artist as much as machinist. Looks like a good size, too. Super pick up in my book!

My favorite vise is not any bench vises but my Herman Schmidt. It is guarantied to .0002 squareness all over. I have two of them and when I bought them in the early 80's they were over $1000. I'd be curious how you checked your vise to find out it was that square Rusty, that is not easy to do. It does look very well made, nice pick up.

This is my first post, so please bear with me.

Long time lurker and recent vise addict. Picked up a Yost 33C and built a stand for it. The base is a 24” harrow disc from Agrisupply. Sealed that off on the bottom with some 1/4” plate and added a 5” x 3/16” wall square post and a 3/8” plate on top cut to match the base of the vise. Filled the stand with 120 pounds of steel shot and sand, for a total weight of just over 300 pounds. It’s absolutely rock solid and yet still somewhat easy to move - just tilt it about 30 degrees and roll it around the shop.

Can’t claim credit for the ideas as I borrowed parts of the design from various fellow garagejournal members. Thanks to all!

Crossing my fingers that the pics show up...

Kmscott on the square accuracy I just took the sellers word but I did check the parallelism on my granite plate and also the flatness using a test indicator. It’s definitely a well made piece it will for sure be more accurate then my abilities as I’m still a student in the trade. Those Herman Schmidt vises are most definitely some extremely beautiful pieces especially the nice wooden boxes they come in.

That is a clean stand. I like it, good job sir!

On a side note...when I see vises sitting unused tightened up, in makes my OCD alarm go off. Have to loosen them.

Nice first post Bill, just love how your stand came out. Looks like a new Yost, how you like it?

Thanks! The Yost 33C was an Amazon Warehouse deal so the price was definitely right and it arrived with zero damage. It’s really well finished and the jaws line up better than any other vise I’ve seen - which, admittedly isn’t that many.

I just finished the stand, so I haven’t used it for any projects yet. I’ve been using two other Yosts (also Amazon deals) for a while and they’ve done everything I’ve asked of them. One is an ADI-6 (ductile iron 6”) and the other is a 918-AS (all-steel with 12” jaw width x 18” jaw opening - borders on the ridiculous, but couldn’t pass it up- everyone laughs when they walk into the garage.)

“Little Red” ADI-6 bolted to my workbench and “Monster Red” 918-AS sitting next to a blue 6.5” cast Yost 465...

Dumb question...

Why is it important to keep the jaws unloaded when not using the vise?

Stumbled across this Wilton with the hydraulic PowRscrew on Craigslist in Valparaiso, IN. Too far away for me, but I thought someone closer may want to grab it. Needs a different base, but otherwise looks very clean. I had never heard of one of these before today, and found this thread with some great info.

Good catch! Picking it up in the morning. Thanks!

Edit: After further inspection, it’s not a PowerScrew but I think I’ll still pick it up.

Yeah it’s not the actual power screw model those particular models had a extremely small and skinny handle. I’ve actually seen one of the models in person at a local community college in the automotive area. I’ve actually been watching that vise for a while now just to far for me to drive.

Well, I talked to him and I’m driving down in the morning, it’s still a rare 67 lb Wilton. Quite stout for a 4.5” vise. Hoping autopts can get me a new base.

Honestly I’m surprised it’s made it this long. He also has a Wilton 935 in excellent condition for sale, might try and get a package deal on both.

Did you talk him down from his asking price? I mean, I know it's a Wilton, but it's a broken Wilton...

I still don't get it. How is storing something designed to clamp in its clamped state bad for the tool? Is the thinking that its unnecessary wear-and-tear on screw threads for no gain?

I use this one when working on AR's. Has a AR-15 lower vice block. Also have some soft plastic teeth hanging on it with magnets in case i use it on anything easy to scuff up.

Just a personal quirk I think that evolved from me being a machinist. I was always told to not store mics and calipers fully closed, the next step was vises. Lol

I don’t generally like to haggle until I can see something in person but now that I know it’s been listed for a year tells me that he’s not willing to budge off the price at all so I’m thinking that I’m going to pass, I never intended on paying his asking price so I don’t want to drive an hour for nothing.

Curious.. what is the bolt/hole in the bottom of the dynamic jaw for if it isn't the PowRscrew model? As mentioned, I just learned yesterday that they even made one of these so I'm still learning.

It's either their tool room vise (most likely) or a powrscrew that someone converted. Wilton used the same base castings for the powrscrew and the tool room version. They solve one of the major complaints that people have of wilton bullet style vises, the flat tops.
