Looks like another Barcalo to me.


Dang Joco, another drool worth old haul. can you tell us more about the speeder with the fixed socket. I never run into those.

It's marked Snap-on BO-64374. No size marking on it but looks like 9/16th to me. Neither of the knurled handles spin, unlike the other speeders in the lot. Don't know if they're actually fixed or just seized up. I'm on the road and haven't had a chance to hit it with a penetrant. I'm guessing they'll spin after a dose of PB Blaster. I'm pretty clueless about Snap On stuff but I have been reading up. I can't seem to find any of the infamous date codes on this thing but judging by the good condition of the chrome it doesn't look anywhere near old enough to be pre date code.

It was a bright but cold morning at 6am today and the first time I could get to the Leeds-Bradford Airport carboot, which opens early!

Picked up a few random things.
> Old wood and metal cash draw - £2.50
(Not sure if using this for parts storage ooorrrr use it to plant small alpines/succulents)

> Universal No.2 adjustable spanner - £2
(first time finding this style in the wild, and England made!)

> 6 x Superslim imperial spanners - £1
(little rusty and some repeats but serviceable and for a quid good enough)

> Woden 3" G-Clamp - £1
(battered but will end up as a hook above my workbench)

> Anglepoise Lamp - £3
(I seem to be having a lamp week!)

> Tiny claw hammer head - £0.50
(No markings but fun to have, need to find a tiny handle)

Thats a WW2 Army toolbox I converted last summer. The bottom was rotten out and was bought for the tools inside.

Love what you did with the old tool box. Beats scraping it out. I've got an old coal forge that's further gone than I want to mess with that's becoming a plant stand this summer.

Ls, they are probably Lufkin square pieces. A lot of their stuff came with an almost od enamel green paint. They might say Lufkin on one of the narrow machined edges.

^^ Beat me too it. I would suspect Lufkin as well. Looks like a 12in blade head and heads for 4 and 6 inch combo squares.

Cheers Bluebomber and JoCo, was a fun way to use some parts heading for the dump. (hand vice is a solid lump of fused rust at the hinge)

The box was easy to date as it has a signed message in the lid:
"Cpl. Whitney took his air drill key, 27. 10.43"

Outlaw..... Mosquitoes.... In Yorkshire? Unless made of wood and powered by twin Rolls Royce Merlins, I doubt anyone has seen one!!

Anther Thrilling Episode in the “Pickers Without Borders” Series

PART 1

General Delirium sent me on a dawn raid this morning. A Sensitive Site Exploitation (a “****** and grab”, in parlance) at a flea market in other pickers’ territory, across the river in Pennsyltucky. As a native northeast Keystoner, I guess he figgered I was the right man for the job. My orders were to infiltrate, blend in as a local, find a large white panel truck with a load of Plums & Firesticks, and grab as much of it as feasible for exfiltration. Weather report was iffy. Terrain easily navigable. Failure unacceptable.

I woke at o’dark thirty, donned my disguise (steel toes, greasy jeans, a vintage MACK truck hat, and a vintage Schaefer beer t-shirt), put a plug of chaw in the corner of my lip, practiced my local lingo (e.g., “yous guys”), and checked my reconnaissance photo, with the Target Area of Interest marked with a green circle.

I crossed the Delaware river less famously and several miles north of Good Old Georgie…

…where the bridge and the welcome sign on the other side of the bridge encouraging me to pursue my happiness almost made the mission seem too easy!

I didn’t need any tactical maps – the Area of Interest was well-marked.

Another Thrilling Episode in the “Pickers Without Borders” Series

PART 2

I found the truck as the guy was setting up his wares and hung back in my truck conducting some long range recon. I didn’t see him unload any Plums or Firesticks. Maybe I had the wrong large white panel truck? Maybe he didn’t bring it? I tried not to panic. Relying on my training, I decided to approach and surreptitiously interrogate the subject, an affable bearded fellow with a quick wit, who told me if didn't want my coffee spilled I had better move it, quickly ascertaining that the objectives were still on the truck. Due to the imminent threat of rain, he wasn’t going to get them out, preferring to unload only the easily re-loaded stuff.

After some small talk, where I won him over with my Pennsyltucky cred and natural charm, he let me climb in the back, and I had the whole lot to myself. It took all my willpower to ignore, for now, the bins marked BONNEY and DURO-CHROME also left on the truck.

Unfortunately, our pre-mission imagery analysis was faulty regarding one of the Plum objectives. Namely, the 3061. It turned out to be a 3055 instead.

I tried not to let my disappointment and my sympathy for Major Olson's future disappointment to deter me from the rest of the mission. In short order, I had sorted the lot into piles of good and unique here, and duplicates or too incomplete there, and quickly used all my negotiation skills, absconding with a sufficient supply of a few other objective Plums & Firesticks, with plenty of resources for a follow-on raid.

And, more importantly, I also managed to ****** a key document (redacted here for INFOSEC purposes!)

It was too early for a celebratory milkshake at Babushkas, but I did manage to snap a photo of a local landmark before returning to base...

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Great report, Lugz!
I had a different objective this morning: an annual flea market in Glenside, on the campus of Arcadia University (formerly known as Beaver College). I have far less exciting news to report from my circuit. Didn’t spend a cent, though I got my hands completely blackened unwrapping three layers of electrical tape from a Craftsman 3/4” combo wrench to confirm that was not an underline (there was an underline DBE in the same bin). Mostly used clothing, student pottery, etc.
The 2” clamp-on vise is model NoV-22, listed in the 1935 Luther Grinder & Tool Co catalog as “Warren” Brand. The catalog address is 112 S Second Street Milwaukee Wis. but a 1937 buyers guide listing on Google Books agrees with the label address - Fond Du Lac Wis. It was missing both cold-rolled steel guide rods, so not much of a vise, as is.
Another guy had what looked to me like a NIB Craftsman “geometric” longC “Yankee” style drill driver including extra bits in a heritage pouch for $10. The metal had an interesting champagne-toned finish. It was, sadly, entirely crusty from prolonged water damage, resulting in rust globs, ruined lacquer on the wood handle, and the beginnings of pot metal swelling and resulting blue paint chipping where the wood handle joins the body.
Finally, a Herbrand 1/4dr set in 1970s faux walnut metal box, missing a socket.

Snags for the weekend. A couple of Plomb (first Plomb I've found in weeks), 1 Tru-Fit Lectrolite DBE, a couple of None Better wrenches, a ratcheting 50s Craftsman that completes a set for me, box of Long C that I bought for the box and some odds and ends of Snap On.

I need to start hanging out with you. That snappy ratchet adapter is really rare. It appears to be the first edition that would be late 1920s. Also could post a couple pics of that Plomb Spud wrench on the Plomb forum.
All in all amazing finds.

Well, I'm hanging in Dayton, Ohio, waiting for my meetings to start tomorrow. I was only planning on going out for lunch when I read Lugz' posts on his flea market sortie into PA. So I switched over to Google maps and found a big one "near" me 45 minutes away. Ah, well, a good excuse to drive the Impala some more and join in the fun.

Caesar Creek in Wilmington, Ohio, is a big flea market, but it only took me an hour to walk it. No really noteworthy finds, just a handful of DBEs, one a Snap-on. I spent $23...and another $5 for a 32oz southern sweet tea and $2 to park the car.

Went to a barn sale advertised as "lots of tools", today was first day I got there 15 min after starting. There were lots of garage supplies- hardware, extension cords, lighting, chemicals, and garden tools. Not much in the way of other tools.

Still managed to find this stuff for $8.

So, I mentioned going to a swap that many versions of something I wanted for my wife birthday, well, I wasn't able to take any pics until she was gone, but here is what I bought her:


A handmade, all hardwood, jewelry box. And it was the craziest estate sale I have been too in a long time. The guy had more money than brains, and he wasn't stupid. There was a live steam railroad out back, restored replica of a Wells Fargo stagecoach, many restored tractors, and I overheard that they pulled over 20 restored cars out of there. And surprisingly, the tools were ****. I am guessing the family pulled them out, but whatever. Here is a poor quality shot of the inside of this place:

I was planning a relaxing day of cleaning up my recent finds when my wife called from her car. On the way to the store she spotted an estate sale a few blocks away. What could I do? I jumped in the Truckasaurus and headed over. There wasn’t much to see but I found a few pieces. The Proto wood handle screwdriver missed the first picture. I’ve found Visegrips at every sale recently. I think the Ridgid pipe wrench had been maybe used once. While I was cleaning it up I found that the jaw clip was the same as the prewar wrenches. There was an extremely broken drill index in the box so I just grabbed the box since I have a few of that brand. The Diamond pliers were a nice medium size.

My first real flea of 2019. Bought this Kennedy box (with tray!) and SK-Wayne 1/4" drive socket set at a swap meet today. Lots of duplicate sockets and later SK sockets inside. I'll add a modern fine tooth ratchet I have to the set.

Stopped at an antique shop on the way back, picking up a cute metal funnel (marked "Pat Applied For") as well as a rusty J N M & Co chain tool that has a vinegar bath in its future.

5 left lower -snap On G(missed it in the first group), left upper: Craftsman. Mostly =V=, but few-V-, and BE (including the breaker bar), right upper - Mustang, right lower - some old hexagonals (does anybody know whi made it). Middle - who knows, but looks nice

6 Left lower: some older US non-named; left upper Globemaster from Kapan, middle - random, taiwan, no name, right upper - no name old, rigt lower and front: randoms: williams, vintage husky, IndestroOTC, blackhawk, etc

7 wrenches: front piece is SO L-62 extension, then couple of SO wrenches, well - take a look - I made a big picture

8 - made a separate picture. Got a Barcalo Buffalo - I think this is the first one I see in this size (will disappoint somebody in the thread of BB - we thought we had it all ...)

9. A lot of random tools: including
Impact driver is HK Porter, Boston MA, pat pend; Big yellow screwdriver is Bonney, large vintage piece is Brownbili, etc

... There were another 6-7 wrenches which I found later after getting this lot and coming back. Mostly small and rusty - barcalo, tiny SO, indestro and large Herbrand 23/3 (one sided, ? for hub caps of the trucks?). The owner wanter $10, then slightly less. I guy who decided to buy everything with his crew (seemed like experienced estate buyer) how much it is worth. He said he will pay $4. I offered this to the owner, but he wanted higher price...Still thinking - may be I should have payed, but couple of them were with rust through the chrome... Damn, still thinking about them (I guess the bug bit me : )


Well, the final cost of everything pictured including gas to get there: $31.50

I dont think you have much to worry about--GJers are mostly a friendly crowd. I think it far better to repurpose a piece of history rather than throw away something others would consider ruined.

Or even to let it just sit in an attic or basement where nobody can interact with it on any level. Agreed.

Not everyone would agree though. There are self-proclaimed purists out there, especially in the WWII militaria realm, who treat every item, no matter how common, like the Shroud of Turin.

Quick anecdote, with pictures...

Last year a guy came on a very well-known WWII site with a line of brilliantly conceived and executed laptop bags, made by hand, completely from re-purposed WWII materials. He was resoundingly ridiculed and hounded off the site for desecrating WWII artifacts.

I contacted him and asked him if he would make a custom laptop bag for me. I sent him all the raw materials, all from WWII except for my nametag and insignia from my service (see Pic 1) and my design (see Pic 2), and Pics 3, 4, 5 & 6 is what I got back! Needless to say, "the Old Crow" as I call it (reference to EW operators), gets a lot of attention and questions at airports and conferences and the like, and my colleagues, all Old Crows, like me, are jealous!

The wooden handle is from a soldering iron. The shoulder strap is a lineman's belt. The lining is from a sleeping bag. Most of the heavy duck is a coal bag and a transport bag. The leather is from the radio bag. The pocket is a rubberized radio bag.

That bag is F-ing Awesome, Lugz.
I usually disparage the consumption of antique handsaws slopped over with “rustic” amateur acrylics or (more destructive) plasma-cutout “Pop-pop’s Shoppe” signs, or the welded-up milk canister swine, wrench & horseshoe centipedes, etc. Aesthetically uninspired. But that object, in its utility and style, is worth the expenditure of materials.

If I ever build a set of drawers for the garage, I intend to use the ubiquitous s-curve wrenches that one finds by the dozen at every tool-guy estate sale as drawer pulls. As Lugs said, better to be out and appreciated in another form than to languish away out of sight in the name of preservation. Especially with something so widely mass produced.

Extremely valid point, BB. I’m not too worried about those S-wrenches, particularly the unmarked ones. I’ve seen those attractive drawer pulls, and had an idea of how to achieve the same effect without welding, if you did want a reversible process.
You could fabricate the stand-offs from solid metal rod, if you didn’t care about a hex head. The OD just has to be larger than the gullets of the wrenches.
Edit: Or even better, hex bar.

Thanks. That is the salient point exactly. It does the original items proud, not shame. Well-done wrench pulls on hand-made drawers would do the same.

More elegantly designed than what I had in mind, but a very similar idea. Construction adhesive on correctly sized bolt heads might work well too.

The pulls I have seen made out of wrenches are attached at the shank with the heads freely extended. But that design is kind of neat.
