Went to one sale on Friday, got there and was told about the guy that used to live there. He was a Vietnam veteran, passed away earlier this year. He was big into civil war reenactment and had the full union uniform. I was looking through his collection and found this unopened bottle of wild turkey, it has a bottled for export from USA. I later dated it to 1965 and it got me to thinking that the guy must of bought it during his service, brought it home and never drank it. It made me think about life and how I should just enjoy things instead of putting it off.

So how did it taste?

Teaser photo of what's to come! I didn't even know the box itself was Snap On when I bought it, it is loaded with tools and it was VERY heavy!

Checked CL before going to bed last night and spotted a "tool assortment must buy all" deal. I texted this morning and then headed over to have a look. There were 2 draw knives, didn't even know there was any vises in the deal but there are 2 of those, 2 crappy tack hammers, 2 rusted leather punches (one is P Lowentraut, Newark NJ), 2 braces, a pair of ice tongs, lead plumb bob and a few other "things". I paid his $20 asking price.

The back story is that I've been looking to buy a good old drawknife for a few months. I've come close to pulling the trigger for some on ebay even one here on GJ. The way things were looking it was going to end up costing me $40 or more to get a decent one. Now, I've got two and for only $20. Need a bit of cleaning up and should work great. The 10" drawknife is a Fulton. The 8" drawknife was made by Ohio Tool Co. The lower brace in the pic is a Victor No 966 8". Didn't have a brace but now I do. Just gravy for me. I'm glad I was patient on buying a drawknife. Happy camper here.

Anyone recognize that little vise? How about the Kristee tool? I'd bet someone here has one of these stashed away. ??

Wow I picked up the same small vise this weekend and was hoping to get some info on it here. The other small vise looks like a minature leg vise. Both are in very good condition. The single axe is a Tru Temper and the double bit is a Craftsman. If anyone knows the years of this double oval logo I'd love to know.

Another “found” item. Knives can be handy tools, for cutting and such.

Found this one in a parking lot. My friend was driving, and cutting through parking spaces (which I do not approve of). The parking lot was empty, and I spotted this. I said “Stop, Stop. Back up!” Which he did, but had a questioning look on his face, like “You’re crazy!!”

Not a high value item, but cool none the less!

More pictures of my Snap On tool box finds, there was also 6 ammo cans with various amounts of stuff.

Edit with description of pictures.

Pic 1: 6 ammo cans and a broken Fuller vise he threw in for free. I have a broken Craftsman vise of this style and I hope I can make one good one out of the two.

Pic 2: OTC axle nut sockets and a truck axle seal installer.

Pic 3: Miscellaneous stuff, Fairmount, Enderes, OTC and others.

Pic 4: Barcalo, Armstrong big allen socket, Bonney, Petersen Vise Grip, Channelock, Husky and that long pointy thing on top is I think for enlarging tubes on old steam engines.

Pic 5: General Motors Locomotive gasket punch kit, Klein Linesman pliers, Mack truck Bulldog hood ornament, DuroChrome screwdriver, Matco wobble socket and screwdriver and a small pile of Proto.

Pic 6: Sears, Dunlap and Craftsman tools.

Pic 7: Close up of the General Motors Locomotive Electro-Motive Division gasket punch set, notice the springs to eject the "chad"

Plomb carbon scraper.
Nice find. What logo does it have on it? Wartime?

Found two holsters...
It must be holster day. :)

Here is my flea market small haul.

Mine is for a .45, a 1942 FINK.

Other items are an Osborne upholsterer's punch, another Schollhorn for the Schollhorn collection (my first St Bernard logo - finally!), and a one-off vintage utility knife for my vintage utility knife collection.

OK enough teasing. Here is the reason I bought the Snap On box, the Snap On and Bluepoint tools! The NS4C speed handle was in the picture of the FB Marketplace ad. Notice the bent black DBE wrench? That is made that way by Snap On, it is a railroad left hand water pump wrench. Anyone have any more info on it's usage? Paid $80 for everything including this new made in USA attic fan and the other tools, ammo cans and hatchets previously posted. . Going to go back and dig some more, lots more stuff there!

I am out of town right now Lugz but will take a pic when I get back.
To save you time and effort, only if the marking is something other than 2337 PLOMB TOOL CO LOS ANGELES. These vintage 10-steel spring style carbon scrapers are WWII GMTK tools (the fed spec actually calls out Blue-Point CS-1 as a model), I have found a Blue-Point, a Wilde, a Decker, and a few unbranded examples, and I have seen the Plomb version with the above marking (a few colleagues have one, including Don/d42jeep), but I have yet to see an example with a wartime PLVMB marking, so it remains a small open question for GMTK guys - as far as I know - whether they had any made with the wartime marking, or whether the prewar marking was used.

Here you go.

It's actually not all that different from a beam-type torque wrench. It just has a different way of giving a read-out. My understanding is that beam-type wrenches are inherently accurate and stay that way.

I have an MHH Engineering (now, Gedore-MHH) dial-type torque wrench. It uses a calibrated coil spring which then works against a rack and pinion.

As mentioned already, this past weekend was the “Portland Swap Meet”. If you like old cars/trucks/tools, this is the place to be.

Here are the “gems” I found this year. Total spend $50:

An Eclipse (Made in England) V-Block with two clamps

All-in-all, Id call it a success!

I have 3 Eclipse V-blocks and only one clamp LOL.

And then..... Today... I went to the HUGE PAte swap meet at the Texas Motor Speedway. There was soo much stuff I only got about a 1/4 of the way through it. About midday I came across a vendor with some vises and just all around stuff that we all look for. I talked to this guy for a bit and we made a deal on a really neat jewelers vise. Afterwards, I mention Garage journal to him.. "OH yea Im on there.. BlueBolt.... " WHAT!?!?! Out of a half billion people there I stumble upon another GJ'er! I told him I was RagtopTA haha we chatted a while and I went on my way. Super cool dude. Nice to meet ya Brian! My very first GJ'er find in the wild!

Pictured are some Bay and Sale finds. Plomb box, 1/2 sockets even a Plomb LA, DBE, Chisel and punch, and a really nice Paschall hammer head I will re-handle. Blackhawk, SnapOn, and Duro sockets, A snappy pick, various wrenches, Bell Systems cutters, Odd ball wrench with the number 27-T-350 and one of those gearless ratchets to match my little one. Also a Mosssberg speedster.

also pictures is a Firestick set I spied for a bit more then I wanted to pay.

Good to meet you too RagtopTA! And for those of you who were wondering that vise is a Bellows, made in Dallas Texas back in the 1950's.

Lugz,
My first scraper was a round O but these are currently the ones in my keeper sets.

I found an estate sale in St. Helena which is about an hour away but we mostly went for the ride through the heart of wine country. This formerly rusty 3/8” drive Walden box was the only thing there reasonably priced at $1.00. I knew I had a bunch of extra Walden sockets and a ratchet so I sanded and painted it. The top and bottom are both embossed Stevens Walden which I had never seen before. We stopped at a Winery and spent around $80.00 for two bottles of wine and two pieces of cheese. I’m not sure the bargain box was such a bargain especially with CA gas being close to $4.00 a gallon.

Couple cool box cutters,Yankee push drill, extensions by Cman ,Williams Proto, and Wright. Adjustable by Proto and Bonney0

We hit three sales today and blew off two others with lines that were too long. The first sale had quite a few Thorsen screwdrivers and some other tools along with a couple of items for the granddaughter. She probably needed a plastic Stillson wrench and another Jeep.
The tools at the second sale were mostly gone but what was left was at least inexpensive. The third sale had a vertical belt sander that may replace my first one which is on it’s last legs.

Need to catch up! Have about a month of sales to post, will try and hit everything.

One of the biggest scores was at a guys house back at the end of March. Had to drop off my parents at the airport, so managed to be first in line, and waited around for a LONG time. Finally got in, and the thing that originally drew me in turned out to be a dud. However, I started looking around the other boxes, and found a magnetic socket holder set with stuff in it. Pulled out a couple, and immediately stuffed them back inside. Grabbed the whole thing, and then started to find other stuff. Put back some large Armstrong impacts (1+" sizes) but got all of this for $20. When he told me the price, I couldn't pull my wallet out fast enough!

Inside the holder was a full set of Snap-on Hex bits, along with a few extras. First photo is them lined up. Also got the set of precision screwdrivers, an XL Armstrong 1/2" drive ratchet, a Circle H extension, and a cool flashlight. I always try and grab led lights, as my son loves them. This one is magnetic on both ends, and the front extends and swivels on a gooseneck! Also got a hex flex adapter from that sale. The random hex sockets by the holder are other usa brands, a 9mm Armstrong wrench, and a Proto universal impact.

The next weekend turned out to be a complete bust. My wife said I could only go to one sale, and it was between a machine shop closing, or possibly scoring one of my unicorns! My buddy went to the machine shop, and cleaned up. Craftsman X-Y table, 10" milling attachment, and smalls were $50 combined. He got a Huot and Kennedy 4-drawer bit cabinets and two smaller cabinets, all fully loaded with bits for $150. Also got a 15-16 and 16-17 Starrett Micrometers for $200 (new they are each over 1K).

Meanwhile I head out to BFE, in search of a blurry picture of what looks like a 103.0304. The King Seeley Craftsman Mohawk drill press in a floor model. Only made for one year before WWII, and never in catalogs. I finally get thru tons of dirt and mud to a place that has Deliverance soundtrack playing in my head. Guy pulls it out and my heart sinks. Someone had taken a benchtop model, and attached it to a second column in the center. Bottom was some kind of square shape, not from a drill press.

Just goes to show, sometimes you score, and sometimes you miss.

I have one older find, but I have to dig through my shop to find all the things to take pictures of.

This week, I went 1 for 4. First miss was a 200+# vise on CL. Listed at 14" tall, and from pictures was at least 6" jaws, possibly bigger. Only $200, but got a voicemail and then deleted before I got a call back. Second was another CL posting, listing indicators and micrometers at $5-10 each. Starrett, Mitutoyo, Brown & Sharpe, etc. Emailed only to have him respond 10min later that the first person grabbed them all. Big surprise. Third was an estate sale with an old Heritage Craftsman roller in what looked like great condition. Had the drawers in the bottom toolchest and everything. Ran out during my planning hours (teacher), and got there an hour after the sale started. Toolbox sold in the first 5 min. Did find a couple of small pieces that I could use (CM Metric Allen set, hard arkansas stone, diamond needlenose, 50pc Masks). Was about $8 all together.

Was debating about trying my luck again on Thursday (the first three being Mon/Tues/Wed) but figured at some point my luck had to turn. Glad I did, because the sale on Thursday finally hit some paydirt. What drew my eye in the listing was the air pistol (I have a .22 Benjamin air rifle) and I have been looking for a match. Unfortunately, it was .177 instead of .22 but the good part of that is that there are still parts available for .177 versions. There was also a low-slung Craftsman Crowntop box, and a grey square box that looked like my 1/4" set with CM embossed on the lid. Turns out both were there as well, the crowntop being a 1/2" set box, and the 3/8 box being an oops, as it looks to have two top lids (see empty pics). Got a full set of metric =V= DOE's, 3/8dr SAE and Metric =V=, a Flying V 3/8 ratchet, extensions and other small bits, a random snap-on wrench, Hand impact, and a ratty Flying Lady tool roll. In the basement, I ran across the Crafty dremel-pistol, with a $10 price tag on it. Found it in the 1940 catalog at 17.95, still works great, and even includes new brushes in a tube! The hand planes are for a buddy of mine. The 1/2" box, 3/8" box and all the random small hand tools were about $20, the pistol was $75, the Crafty was $10 and the hand planes were $15 for both.

Did Craftsman also use Cad plating during WWII? The 8" adjustable looks very dull compared to any others I have. Is a Circle Y model.

Pics from Wed Sale, as well as the last of the Thursday cleanup. Forgot to mention the box of small nutdrivers/screwdrivers. They actually don't smell that bad, especially considering what the outside of that box looks like.

The hand planes, and a small precision screwdriver set I thought was too "cute" to leave behind.

I found proof of some postwar cad plated =v= Craftsman tools but I haven’t seen very many. I don’t know the vintage of your adjustable wrench.

BMW, to access the piston for servicing, is it the set screw by the front of the barrel, or the two screws by the back? Not holding much air right now. Edit: Nevermind, I found a guide where someone stripped the whole thing down. Thanks.

Missed out on one a few months ago, and kept beating myself up over it. This was a 35min trip each way, with a 2hr total window to shop, so kept debating. Glad I went. Guy running the sale said that 2min after I put it on the hold table, another person came asking him about if it had sold.
