Finally picked up my Parker 60X from the freight terminal, this thing is a monster. It makes my Reed 108R feel small. It needs some work for sure but the vise is sound and the nut / threads are good. Just gotta fix up the meatball, new handle, have a friend cast me a Parker collar and machine some jaws which will be easy since they are replaceable.

Definitely worth it for a vise this big.

That is either a big vise or a small car!

Just finished the cleanup on the Prentiss no.18. I’m surprised at how small the vise is. I put a swivel jaw from a 22 in one of the photos for perspective.e3295c935fd270b726ea43d468131c24.jpg227e3317c96758c19cfb5184ea201e57.jpge0d8de6ec37cb1c9b9c43eb4136ab2d7.jpga7977a2556d4afd25061c95613c2d8c5.jpg

Well, I hope to prove you wrong with my dog of a Prentiss 56, that Reed vise should be easily repaired and be totally useable.

Of course the price would have to be right, I wouldn't pay collector price for a repairable user.

I did not mean to imply that there was any reason not to fix a vise. I realize and admire that there are people on here than can repair or fix just about anything. I just do not have the knowledge, time and machines to do that. I am all for Americans building and repairing items here as opposed to throwing ithem away or depending on foreign junk.

Drove 2.5 hours at 5am today to buy a Reed 108 with “no cracks or repairs.” I think they misunderstood what a crack is...

Needless to say I passed. What a waste of time.

Sorry Vise; time, money and effort wasted. not to mention the disappointment and frustration of lining up a good vise that turns out not so good. Had similar thing happen on Friday except the seller drove it over to me. Reed 106, great condition, etc. Pull it out to look it over and there's a dime size hole in the side of the static. Me-What's this? Him-Don't know, never seen that before. Me- can I pick it at? Him-sure but it's nothing to worry about. 30 seconds later the hole was the size of a quarter, 3/4" deep and still growing. Him-wow, I've never seen that before but I'll drop the price by $150. Me-sorry you wasted your time driving this over but we aren't gonna make a deal on this one.

There’s a good karma make up deal just on the horizon.

Thanks man. Appreciate that.

Thanks. That sounds frustrating too. It’s never fun when you get your hopes up for something and it falls through. On to the next one.

That’s another little jewel to add to your collection! Great work cleaning that one up.
Andrew:
Just a little surface rust...that’ll clean up very nicely. Good score!

Thanks for dropping in on the vise pages.

Except I missed throwback thursday. Oh well. Finally ended another quest about a year ago, for one of these Stanley clamp-on vises styled like a larger machinist vise.

Found this rusty diamond for $5 in a milk crate full of other clamp-on vises, all the exposed screw/guide rod type. So this was the pick of the rusty litter.

This vise was also the guinea pig for my dad's e-tank v2.0, which did a great job (that's his 5" Columbian holding the vise). Electrolysis made the stamping on the tail end of the slide legible once more, and got a nice surprise that it's a Stanley Rule & Level no. 743, so around 100 years or more old.

The cast clamp wing nut is *not* broken! The clamp foot is there as well, and handle isn't bent. Usually seems these little guys have 1 or more of those 3 issues, I got lucky here.

Let me be the first to say you ****! I can just picture the look on your face whe you spotted it in the crate. Finding one without any issues make the find that much sweeter. I often see these vises beat to death but yours looks really clean.

Another one too late for the Throwback Thursday of tiny vices, but here is a new (to me) Record 00 that I picked up this week for a tenner. Don't think there is anything wrong with it, will be bathed in white vinegar then cleaned up.

I fancy trying to keep this one 'bare metal' look, and I see the Johnson paste recommended regularly on these threads but it isn't available on these shores. Anyone know of an equivalent or can any fellow Brits advise?

p.s. sorry I couldn't find one of those baby cans that you guys drink, this is all I had going.

Prentiss vise no’s 18 19 19 1/2 20 21 22. Inching ever closer to the full set. The 23 is the last piece of the puzzle.9d0a4e275b9758cf5ca65e8021bbb6d1.jpg18362cc4df8c08a51a2f3db46e93f432.jpgd0c53874075be65395d6ebfc5a969ca4.jpg6b35e0cf648dfd9a795446a2cd9c343c.jpg

OK, that was a lot fun! You definitely saved the hardest for last. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the elusive Prentiss No.23 for you.

Thanks all for the kind words, it was a lot of fun getting to this point. It’s hard to photograph six vises at once so I put them on the bench for one last photo. Nice avi Jeppen.6ea7b06f6619d528c71e1c6c3b003624.jpg

Wow! This is advertised close to me in Florida. How much does he want for it? Do you know?

This is the same vise that is for sale in Alabama, he basically took it apart and primed it. This vise was originally blue and was pictured sitting in a tractor bucket. If you look at the last four photos it pretty much tips his hand.

Smitty- very nice Prentiss collection. Disregard my PM, as I see you’re already acquainted with our friend in Alabama.

As expected your Prentiss swivel jaw family pics are awesome! I saved them all. Thanks for taking the time to pose them for us.

I have a no. 21 and a portion of a no. 22 and it's your newly acquired little 18 that is my favorite. Now that you got yours I think I'll try to snag the next reasonably priced example.

Picked up this heavy duty vise stand today. Will eventually make some time to mount a big vise on it.

Hallo from sunny Yorkshire!

Whilst I might lust after some of the largest of USA iron shown on here (I'm looking at you Smitty) I unfortunately live in a small UK terrace house with a workshop in the basement so I go for the smaller things in vice life...

Picked up these on Saturday

DSC_1489.jpg

A clamp on 2.5" jawed vice from HOBBIES with a tiny horned anvil out back.
Its basically a handvice with a clamp/anvil cast on it.
DSC_1504.jpg

Kinda small when clamped into my Samsonia bench vice :headscrat
DSC_1505.jpg

But perfect on it's intended workplace, my workmate :)
DSC_1503.jpg

And a dainty hand vice with no markings, pictured here next to my Bridgeport hand vice picked up a couple of weeks ago.

Definately a bunch of back breakers up there...those big ones are nice to talk about but not so nice to move around.

Mr. Smitty, congrats on the No.18 Prentiss..cute little guy right?

My nephew picked up this 505 M2 for me for...lets just say less than $20.

Best,
Rob
