It's no secret that the flea market business in my area has tanked. On top of that, I have to race Twertsy to all the good stuff that appears online. Given these tough times, I've been forced to travel to the large fleas that are 45 minutes or more away whenever I get a break from Mrs. Horsey's list of home improvement projects. Needless to say, I don't get out to the large fleas very often.

I have been going to the local indoor flea, which traditionally has yielded nothing. The good news about the place is that it's less than 5 minutes away and they are now doing outdoor tables.

All of that said, once the weather is nice, you get a constant flow of new vendors, many of which have embraced the 1 dollar table concept. These people usually go to auctions and buy mystery lots, final hour bulk purchases at garage sales, and any other wholesale situation they may find.

After some thought, I figured it would be fun to post things that I find from this sort of vendor, and thus my new thread of 1 dollar or less pick ups.

During my lunch break from Mrs. Horsey's deck resurfacing project, I did a quick sneak over to the flea. All five of these wrenches were caked in rust so I soaked them in WD-40 rust eater and then gave them a quick wipe with a rag. The stubby Craftsman is the star in this lot.

Friends would often ask me if there was anything particular I might want them to pick up when they were leaving on vacation. My response was "The best thing you can find for under a buck."

I like this thread already.

Free certainly qualifies as a dollar or less. With that, here is the story on this 1/2 inch drive Plomb ratchet.

A guy at work is cleaning out the estate of his late parents. While going through the kitchen junk drawer, he came across this ratchet.

"I know that you like to fool around with old tools and junk so I figured you might want this...".

Are you kidding me? Of Course!

This ratchet saw little to no use and was stored inside its entire life. I've never come across a cleaner Plomb ratchet before.

I found myself with a small break from Mrs. Horsey's home improvement work camp so I snuck down to the closest decent flea this morning.

I dug all of this stuff from the bottom of a filthy dry rotted duffel bag and the seller set the price of 50 cents a piece for whatever I pulled out.

As you can see, very early SnapOn sockets, Blackhawk and Bonney came out of the magic bag. Upon closer inspection, I found all of the tiny Plomb stuff including the 9/32 extension, tiny ignition wrenches and the awesome set of mini channel locks.

The Dunlap hand block sander and the 50s Craftsman hammer were thrown in for free. Looks like I have to find a new set of bumper ends though.

Never saw a Dunlap block sander before. Please post up a pic of it in the Dunlap thread so it'll add to the archives over there.

Alot of nice pieces in there. Can't pass on some early stuff for 50cents each. Hope the supervisor didn't notice your absence from the home improvement workcamp.

Mrs. Horsey can teach a certain 3 letter agency some lessons in proper intelligence gathering. She knows things before I even get the bad idea in my head. lol

In this case, the quick run to the flea was overlooked due to recent progress on 4 of her home improvement projects. Plus my spend was well under the amount that would trigger an immediate investigation.

Now, if I could just beat Twertsy to some of the high dollar rare stuff...lol.

The patent comes back to 1940/41. I've never seen one before but it cleaned up nicely. The patent mentions that this block sander takes a roll cartridge that you load up like you would an old school cap gun. I just fit it with a piece of paper and it works like a champ.

I will post some pics in the Dunlap thread.

Haha. I know the feeling. My wife I think baits me from time to time asking if I want to stop at a place as we drive by. Always feels like a trap.

That's why I throw Mrs. Bonney an unexpected or odd reference every so often so I'm not entirely predictable! :lol_hitti

My dad had one when I was a kid. I think it was branded Stanley, so the design was licensed out.

Nice finds TH! Looking at those mini channel locks I had to go out and check the pair I found last year. Mine are Indestro.

Hi Sonny,
I know this is going back a few months, but I'm only seeing this post for the first time when the thread got bumped, sorry.

You are actually missing one (1) wrench - an E68 (3/8"-15* angle x 11/32"-60* angle), to go with that E67 (11/32"-15* angle x 3/8"-60* angle) you already have. The E69 did not have a partner. They also made a smaller 7-wrench set, in which the E67 did not have a partner.

If that roll-up has eleven (11) pockets, it's a No. 1711 set, and the 11th pocket was for a miniature screwdriver, a DuroLite No. 182. A very hard screwdriver to find. Hens teeth.

The nine-wrench (no other tools) set was No. 1709 and the seven-wrench (no other tools) set was No. 1707.

The other interesting thing about your set is that it seems to be transitional in the mid- to late 30's. Around 1939 they added an "E" in front of the 61 through 69 model numbers. Your 61 through 66 wrenches came out of an earlier production batch than your E67 and E69 wrenches. Kind of neat.

Oh, and your roll-up is in fabulous condition.

I would send you an E68 if I had an extra, but right now the E68 is a gap for me, as is the E66 (see orphans in pic below).

It is indeed an 11 pocket set. I can see the imprint of where the small screwdriver is supposed to go.

Like all of the other sets that I have that are missing one or two items, I've cataloged this set with the missing wrench you've mentioned along with the hens teeth screwdriver. Maybe one day I will stumble over the missing items.

In the mean time, Mrs. Horsey has all of my spare time devoted to home improvement projects so my dollar or less finds thread will be pretty much dormant over the winter months.

A good shot of Kroil and this one dollar “broken” ratchet works perfectly. 3/8ths Blackhawk stuff is hard to come by these days.

You ****. And you are proud of it. And we are proud of you!!!
I tell Mrs Dumber to get some practice on negotiating when she is in the “antique”. Take an item marked $50 and tell them you’ll give them $7. See what happens. Can’t get her to learn the game.
$1 and under - wow. You set the low bar pretty high.

Yep. One American dollar was all it took to drag home a seized up ratchet. A common issue with these free wheel Blackhawks when you leave them sit for a loooong time without oil.

It's been a while since I found anything for a dollar or less but today I got both of these gems for a dollar.

A Plomb 4515 stud remover with 4516 and 4517 wedges that are neatly stored inside the socket with a lock pin. The way this works is pretty cool. You place one of the wedges through the large hole and then as you apply force the wedge tightens on the stud for grip.

This old air gauge was made by Syracuse Gauge Manufacturing, Corp. I tested it out and it works perfectly. The meter is made of metal as well.

Today I found my favorite kind of seller at the flea market.

“Just make a pile.”

Less than a dollar a piece later, a healthy mix of SK, SnapOn, P&C, Craftsman, Fleet and of course the green handle Diamond adjustable.
