I got these sockets from an estate back before there was an internet. In fact, before Al Gore even thought up the internet! It was about 35 years ago, and they have been in a drawer, confined in a Ziploc freezer bag ever since. I remembered them and dug them out to share with you folks. :)

Picked up these at the local ARC thrift store. Sockets/extension and butchers knife, each $4.99.

Craftsman USA made (-v- I think), 1/2in drive impact 10 piece shallow socket set. SAE 7/16 thru 1in, 6in impact extension and rail. Single S-K USA made deep 13/16 socket. Lightly used, no rust. I don't do much wrench turning, but I follow all you guys religiously...

I am actually more excited about the butchers knife. 10in blade, high carbon, straight blade and straight edge (bad cell phone pic makes it look serrated, LOL). Some pitting and a small crack in the wood handle. This one should clean up nicely and be a good user. Heck, the blade is pretty sharp just as it sits.

"I can't tell because the end has been grinded on, p, and the tip is broken off, but yeah, that made me think twice. The only Buck Bros stuff I have seen has been later, chisels, with integral handles. I dunno. EDIT: You tell me..."

Lugz, I have one too. Mine is made by "James Swan company". It's a reamer. I found a Swan catalog online.

Hit one garage sale yesterday and two estate sales today
The garage sale netted the following:

Two Armstrong tappet wrenches, P&C and SK sockets, Millers Falls push drill and a Proto LA wrench. $2

That's not just any Millers Falls push drill, that's a Buck Rogers-era Millers Falls push drill! Well found!

Thanks, Jeff - and pfaustus too. I would never have guessed that. So coarse/crude compared to the later vintage reamers I have!

EDIT:

I did find a bio online for my MOORE BROS auger file... Linked here.

Went with a friend to a garage sale that was advertised on Facebook marketplace. He didn’t have too much older stuff, though I suppose he probably sold a lot before I got there. Did a bit of digging and pulled this stuff. There is some S-K, wizard, gearwrench, craftsman, snap on, knipex, cornwell, P&C, xcelite, proto, an empty drill index (I need), and an unknown hammer. The head has a worn “made in USA” stamp, though I’m thinking after a bit of rust removal may reveal the maker. It probably Stanley though... Not a huge haul, but not bad for $25

Small haul today but interesting variety I think.

First is this interesting looking discharge meter measuring DC volts

Blackhawk-Armstrong DOE marked "HEXITE" no. 4039-B in 1-1/4" & 1-5/16"

Powr-Kraft USA no. 481500 ratchet, 3/8 drive, with dual ejector pin "quick release". This is a Thorsen rebrand.

small Whitman & Barnes S-wrench, don't see many V-gullet wrenches of this style.

Blackhawk no. 15613 shorty offset DBE, 1/2" & 9/16"

S-K no. 8816 metric flare wrench, 16 × 17

Craftsman long-C no. 1 tappet wrench, 3/8" & 7/16"

Came across a Plomb 5295 box at a garage sale today, but more than half the tools in it weren't Plomb.

Seller said it was okay to remove the non-Plomb items and we would make a deal on the Plomb 5295 box and Plomb tools.

Got the following Plomb tool items:

5280 5265 5249 4749 4785 5262 5260 5224 5222 5220 5218 5216

5214 5212 5270 4712 4710 4711 4708 4707 and a Plomb hammer

Mike

The set you ended up with looks kind of like my postwar set.

SWMBO and I hit a TOO estate sale on the way back from running errands this morning. It was the barn of a horse riding farm that had been donated to Habitat for Humanity years ago. The barn had a lot of bric a brac, some tools, and furniture. We fished thru it and came up with the following for $6:

glass plate for SWMBO's yard art projects

Stanley Phillips screwdriver

8mm Craftsman combo

Six spade bits--five are Irvin Speedbors, the largest one is a China-made infiltrator...5389dc934d4a191dbb11e6fdc5241c36.jpg

Edit: forgot to include this torpedo level, an Ace Hardware 27093

I am about a month behind from posting. So this may be broken up into a few different posts. First weekend, I grabbed a Oxy-Acetelyne set for $50 with small tanks (one oxy, two acetelyene), regulators, and a jeweler's torch for $50. Also grabbed a couple of small items, and some babbett bearing ingot-blocks for a friend. IT was fun asking them to price those, and when they looked confused, I asked if they even knew what they were for. Those were about $10. We stopped by a moving sale right near us on a whim. Wife found a hammock seat for $12, I got a bunch of wire (14ga and heavier, both NM and THHN) for about $5, and we got a full carport with a set of sidewalls, and a full enclosure kit (making two sets of sidewalls) for $50. Free from this one was a Snap-on deep socket, a Snap-on 1/4" torque wrench QJR117E (ratchets, but no torque setting, going to see about repair or just an extra-long 1/4" ratchet), and a folk-art sheet metal pig. Needs the wings welded back on.

Next week, my son and I hit up a couple of community yard sales around. First stop led me to a ton of tools. Owner was selling everything and going to move into an RV. Most of the sockets are Snap-on, as well as the red pliers. I don't recognize the maker of the DBE's or the bushing driver, ideas? The 1/4" craftsman box was empty, but I am going to measure the existing insert I have, and 3d print one in blue, and fill it with my metric =V= sockets. I already have a spare Flying-V ratchet and breaker bar, along with an extension. This makes the third or fourth Helicoil insert kit I have found in the last month or so. Keep grabbing them since they are under $1 each, and so far no duplicates. Cost was $25 for all of this.

After driving around for a bit, I saw a riding lawnmower with a Free sign on it. About 8 months ago, we moved to 8.5 acres from a suburban house, and had been trying to think about a cost effective way of keeping it under control. I asked the guy about what was wrong, and it turns out the only issue is with the PTO control, which turns on and off the mower blades. New PTO's are maybe $100, but there are a couple of other fixes I need to try first. Runs and drives great, maybe 10 years old if that.

We also hit up an estate sale, where we found a set of #5 welding googles (with a headband, and spring-loaded arms to move the googgles around) and a trailer wheel jack for $10. We also got some stacking LEGO bins for him to store various things in his room with.

I picked up these little socket sets for $4. The sets are complete but the 4 loose sockets have the same 1/2 hex openings on the bottom so I figured they were spares or something. Hopefully the pictures work, first time trying this out.

This last week, I found a couple of amazing finds. First, at a local online auction, I picked up two riding carts to attach to the lawnmower (free from the week before). One is a square sheet-metal design, and the other is a plastic dump version. Spent about $75 for both, and also found a stabilizing jack for my tilt trailer. Then as I was going down to grab them, I saw an ad for a benchtop drill press with a Vari-slow attached, $50. I messaged him, only to see he posted a baldor 1/2hp grinder also posted for $50, right before I messaged about the drill press. We made a time to meet on Sunday, and I headed over there. His brother had given him some tools that he didn't need, and wanted to get rid of them. He also had a Baldor sander that his wife had not even listed yet. He then proceeded to point out the flaws with them (Baldor missing glass eye-shields, took a while to run down, etc), so I helpfully pointed out the issues with the drill press (missing headband, tapped head for bad cover, no tilt table). In actual "bad" news, I did discover the Varislow was cracked, but it was a clean break on the very front of the arm. The sander has a wierd plastic cover that also (surprise) has a small crack. When I asked him how much he would want for all three machines, cash today, he told me $100 for all three. Loaded them up and brought them home. Sander is a 2x48, that apparently retails for north of $2k!

The Vari-slow will be going onto my '46 floor model, and going to sell off the benchtop. The Grinder will be replacing my 1/2hp Commercial block grinder.

Forgot to put this in the correct post, but I wanted more info on this anyway. From what I can determine, this is WWII vintage, missing the tub of "paint". Various sizes seem to be priced all over the map, including finding sold items for maybe 10-15 and also 150-200+? Is it based on the size of the stencil? I have gone through and found a full set of numbers/letters/punctuation in 1", haven't checked out the 1/2" yet. The person I purchased it from was the gentleman who was going to move into his RV. He told me it was his dad's before he passed away, and guess the seller was in his 60's(?).

Lugz, you are one of the resident WWII militaria experts. Ideas on worth, use, other cool facts?

You guys are doing far better than I this weekend! Decent AM YS cruise, but nothing earthshaking;

five planned stops no productive TOO's but I think I got something from all five stops:

First one claimed "tools, tools, tools," and was fair but not near as many as expected. I did get there 15 min early and STILL had guys ahead of me... He was still setting up. I was thinking as he priced everyone else, and looking at his printed list of prices for power and seeing "price new" and "price used" that I'd be telling him "you want these more than I"

When I finally got his attention and showed him the handful of tool, al ha asked was a handful! (five bucks!) :bounce:

A really nice condition Buck Knife (blades are unmolested, the grip needs cleanup, but that's all. - 1961-76- so early!) Thread File, Metric MAC DOE, SAE Wright, P&C, then Proto + Proto drivers...

attachment.php

Second stop: Stilletto 13 oz. hammer, small bronze brush, and a "giveaway" advertising pocket driver. I remember when most any parts store handed these out when you bought tuneup parts... A buck all!

attachment.php

next stop I bought a Daisy pump up BB gun (Next pic - needed oil but also needs new Oring(s)... ), The Tube Amp, (broken on delivery and supposedly replaced so I'l see if its something simple like a broke component or connection...) The water sprat fan (project Van A/C is still out so..), 7X35 Binocs, and some scout patches - $10 all!

attachment.php

Another stop for the aluminum roll up camp table and propane for $5

attachment.php

LAst stop I picked up 5 DVD's a couple I wanted to see but never did, and a couple just to see how modern westerns are... A buck each.

attachment.php

And from yesterday and a Freecycle stop, This "Folding" Chair that took my fancy - Not yet sure where it is heading - possibly replace my "work stuff" chair (where my Day pack/Laptop and light jacket lands...) and be handy for use as a ladder as that is in front of one of two 5X5 Ikea Expedite units (Kero lantern collection on top)

It may also go camping? its bulky, but also could be handy... Or I may use it as a model for something similar? :dunno:

Cruzan, you double **** n that Baldor haul. Sorry to hear the grinder takes so long to run down, lol.

I picked up a similar but less complete bushing driver set at the flea market this morning.

e2256d7db22aa8e53ebd53d5c2c2d798.jpg

Mine is unmarked too, but some quick research shows it's most likely from the L.O. Beard Tool co. in Lancaster PA, later bought out by KD tool. Looks like they also made them for SO and BluePoint as well.

Three bucks for the bushing driver set, Cman ignition pliers and Cman impact driver.

This afternoon I hit the estate sale I went to on Tue (before it started). Today was the last day. Picked up the Ridgid pipe threader (1", 3/4" & 1/2") for $5. The rest of the stuff was $2 in total. Whiteside roundover router bit; De-Sta-Co clamp (missing the stop); Yankee screwdriver No. 41 by North Bros, Phil. PA; Stanley HandyMan Yankee screwdriver No 133H; microplane by Grace Manu; Proto 1/2" ratchet, Klein rebar pliers (missing spring); Plomb wire cutters; Bell System Klein wire cutters; small Lloyd pliers (stamped England). I've never seen any Lloyd tools. Anyone know anything about them? Solid and cool small size.

I made a quick trip to the Tahoe flea this morning. For the second time in two days I found a partial Walden 1/4” & 3/8” socket set. I’ll put the best pieces into one set. Quite a few Craftsman pieces, and an early Erie pipe wrench for research. The longnoses are Klein, the DOE wrench is Thorsen.

Round trip to Lancaster today. Along the way, stopped at two yard sales in my own neighborhood, where I got everything in the picture for $18. About half is made in USA. The Kraeuter 3/8dr set is missing the 1/4 and 1/2 short sockets, which was a nice bonus, because I actually bought the tote it was in for the sandpaper and the Stanley 100-plus 2’ level. The unopened 10” 60-tooth Diablo blade, which will fit my table-saw or miter-saw, came from the other sale.
I stopped in Robesonia PA for a community yard sale, but other than a few climbing stands, did not see anything of interest. In Lancaster, picked up a 3-shelf office unit for FREE.
All in all, a good day.

Went back to the two estate sales I hit yesterday, looking for scraps and bargains. This is what I got at the first:

Proto brake spoon, Snap-on angle wrench, Par-X extension, MAC saltus and Proto Pro bit socket. They had a couple of really nice wood case T&D sets but wanted way too much for them. $2
The big sale was half price today, and getting there in the PM is even better, but not as much good stuff. But I found a few things:

Imperial refrigeration wrenches, box of 1/4-20 taps, Opinel tree saw, The heaviest offset screwdriver I have ever seen which is a Snap-on 050, SK bit driver, Proto bit socket, Proto Phillips screw starter, bits for push drill, Snap-on scale, Hallowell bit driver with bits in the handle, P&C driver and a screw gauge. There was a ton more, most of it stuff I wasn't remotely interested in. But they were making deals so I only paid $6 for all that. But I forgot to mention the thing I pulled out of the free/trash pile there yesterday.

Snap-on KRA 412 side shelf. Rusty on the side, but still very serviceable. Can't beat that for free.

Not a garage sale find but this came in today. Can’t wait to clean it and add it to the other 1/4” Craftsman sets!

I was able to make day 3 of this sale .Prices were at 50% off. House was crowded, full of stuff so it was a tough traverse. Lots of elec. gizmos, telegraphs and such. The tools were pretty picked over,and/or just common junk drawer stuff which I need less of not more. Anyhow picked up 2 Proto screwdrivers,a stash/snuff box with cool inlay, and an empty Remington ammo box. I couldn't leave it behind, 60 miles round trip and a $1 got me the handful.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I am enjoying the pictures of Beemer's footwear! Yesterday he was wearing some kind of maroon plush funky earth shoes, today it's classic Converse, Chuck Taylors, lowquarters!

The discharge tester was used to test automotive battery cells back in the "dark ages."
Then, batteries had a hard rubber case and were sealed with tar on top.
You poked the tips of the tester into the tar to make contact on the seperate cells.
Batteries could be rebuilt, cleaned, cells replaced.

Actually often the cells connection bars were exposed above the tar, so using a tester like that made checking the individual cells easy...

here is a 6V battery:

Just an addendum to my previous post..

I thought the hammer was USA. Hit it with the wire wheel and sho ‘nuff, “Stanley Made In USA”...

The handle looks salvageable, though there is a split on the shaft, just under the head. Not sure if I want to glue it or what... I actually want to put this one into common use and get rid of some of the others/down size a bit...
