I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I am enjoying the pictures of Beemer's footwear! Yesterday he was wearing some kind of maroon plush funky earth shoes, today it's classic Converse, Chuck Taylors, lowquarters!
:lol_hitti
I am surprised you don't recognize Clarks Dessert Trekkers, a modern version of the footwear worn by British soldiers in North Africa during WWII!

Yorkshire Calling!
Decided I need to get back to something approaching "normal" (although is habitual tool buying normal????? :headscrat )
Popped over to my favourite Reclamation Yard yesterday and was meant to find old hardwood planks for a project....but...
DSC_1609.jpg

Picked up a pair of fairly modern red painted bentwood chairs for £5 each. A quick wipe with a damp rag and they are already in use.
DSC_1611.jpg

A rather odd ball pick was this quirky wooden violin case, it was tucked away behind a pile of signs the guy had forgotten about, £10. No idea on what I'll use it for...as I'm musically inept
20190615_115338-COLLAGE.jpg

Aaannnnnnnndddddd another vise!!!!
No.1 Paramo (made in England) mounted to a nice base plank, that has been sized to clamp perfectly into a B&D Workmate, or a Samsonian Vise. £10
20190616_084154-COLLAGE.jpg
After just a brief degrease most of the "rust" has cleared and the black finish is in amazing condition!. :bounce:
May post more pics in the vise thread.

And as I was awake at 5am this morning I dragged myself out of bed to have a poke around the Sunday fleamarket and spent a total of £10.....£3 of which was for a Bacon Butty .....and £1 for entry

DSC_1621.jpg
>New roll of "rag-towl" £2
>The sieve, tin cup, metal film tub and two screwdrivers came from one seller for £1. The cup, sieve and film tin were from a film developers dark room. The sieve has hooks on the side to hold onto the lip of a bucket...useful parts washer :)
>2 pairs of small "Made in Sheffield" scissors £1
>Long handle Knipex pincers £1- Made in Germany, jaws need a little work (nicks)
>Rabone "Tuflok" 3m aluminium tape measure £0.50p
>KING **** Metric DOE spanner £0.50p - Didn't need another spanner but it has an MOD Broadarrow and a 1985 stamp ...................the spanner and I are the same age!?!? :lol_hitti

From what I can determine, this is WWII vintage, missing the tub of "paint". Various sizes seem to be priced all over the map, including finding sold items for maybe 10-15 and also 150-200+? Is it based on the size of the stencil? I have gone through and found a full set of numbers/letters/punctuation in 1", haven't checked out the 1/2" yet. The person I purchased it from was the gentleman who was going to move into his RV. He told me it was his dad's before he passed away, and guess the seller was in his 60's(?).

Lugz, you are one of the resident WWII militaria experts. Ideas on worth, use, other cool facts?
Sorry, Cruzer, missed this my first time through. (Hosting really makes you pay better attention!)

I don't know much about it off the top of my head. Looks legit. I have never seen one before. I will look up Hanson in my 1945 dated Major War Supply Contracts books, and I will look for the actual Fed Spec in my 1939 copy of the Fed Specs. I do have a WWII stencil brush. I will see who made it.

I can tell you that it would be VERY popular with the Military Vehicle set. I doubt anyone would use them, but it would be cool to have out in a Living History Display at a MV show. In fact, if I were in the middle of a jeep resto project, I would be tempted to leave off half the white unit and jeep number marking on the front bumper, and set that out on the ground or on the bumper in front of the jeep, as if the unit and jeep number marking was just being applied in the field. (When the MBs and GPWs left the Willys and Ford plants, they were bare. No markings. No pioneer kit. No rope. Just the toolset. And the jeep number on the hood in blue.) The units would paint the front and rear bumpers with unit and truck number markings and re-do the blue DOD number in white. They would have used something like your kit, if not that very kit.

Butterfield catalog.
That is sweet cover.

Garage Sale on Saturday not too far away. I was at this sale a couple of months ago and spent a bunch of money. Guy said they combed through the garage and found enough stuff for another sale. Snap-on grease cup remover, couple of pickle forks, compression tester hoses & a couple of flat blade screwdrivers. Blue Point AC fitting kit, YA125A obstruction ratchet, 3/8 shorty wrench and a huge hose clamp pliers. Couple of Par-X wrenches, Matco scraper, Craftsman metric hex set, some metal markers and a GB wire stripper.

The Bocce set is vintage. I've seen a few balls at a time now and again in the wild, never a complete set, and never the chaser. It's complete with a really nice old pattern engraved on it. I've been planning to put in a Bocce court in my side yard where a humongous wooden playset used to be. All my kids are grown and it's way past due to do something else with it. I have it all planned out with nice high wooden borders/seats. Going to roll in some clay, and it can double for ********. Guy wanted $30. I hesitated and he dropped it to $20. I said I would pay his first price if it included the old wooden carry box. Sold! My hunch is there was probably a set on the other side, too. Came out of an old beachhouse estate.

Anyone know (HINT: or remember!) what the thing on the corner is?!

Old school glasses case, but I've see those with a set of tools in them as well? (trying to remember what type...)
Blow the dust and cobwebs off those synapses. You're almost there. I'm dying to give a couple clever hints but it would give it away immediately.

I've seen a couple with micrometers in them.
It's funny what the oldtimers used to keep smalls in (e.g., Band-Aid tins, SUCRETS tins, etc). But this was an actual midget toolset packed and delivered, believe it or not, from the factory like that, with an eyeglass case for a case.

Hit a couple of garage sales on Sat, picked up three v series 1/2 inch drive metric sockets, 19,21,22 size and this Craftsman yankee style drill driver with 10 bits, quarter each for the sockets and 50 cents for the driver...used a little polish on the driver, works great..

Early Chapman set, ( or similar)
Ding ding ding! Yes!

Didn't you find a set of these before as well?
And yes, I sure did! But do you remember what happened to it? I sent it to Chapman for their museum because they had never seen one with the wartime decal before. They didn't even know they existed! Link to my Chapman thread here.

Cruzan80:

I can't find the wartime Fed Specs for the stenciling outfit, but I do have the wartime Fed Specs for the brush. (See Pics 1 through 4.) My brushes are all Osbornes. (See Pic 5.) I did find Hanson in the Major War Supply Contracts listings. They supplied "Marking Outfits" to the US QMC in 1942. Those may have been the punch and tap hammer sets, which also went by that name. (See Pic 6.) But it may cover the stencil outfits, too. Nice find!

10mm and 3/16th Nut Spinners in what appears unused condition.

Don't need them, paid more than I should have for a pair of nut spinners.... But then again when will I see Craftsman in the UK again???? [emoji848] DSC_1632.jpg

This last week, I found a couple of amazing finds. First, at a local online auction, I picked up two riding carts to attach to the lawnmower (free from the week before). One is a square sheet-metal design, and the other is a plastic dump version. Spent about $75 for both, and also found a stabilizing jack for my tilt trailer. Then as I was going down to grab them, I saw an ad for a benchtop drill press with a Vari-slow attached, $50. I messaged him, only to see he posted a baldor 1/2hp grinder also posted for $50, right before I messaged about the drill press. We made a time to meet on Sunday, and I headed over there. His brother had given him some tools that he didn't need, and wanted to get rid of them. He also had a Baldor sander that his wife had not even listed yet. He then proceeded to point out the flaws with them (Baldor missing glass eye-shields, took a while to run down, etc), so I helpfully pointed out the issues with the drill press (missing headband, tapped head for bad cover, no tilt table). In actual "bad" news, I did discover the Varislow was cracked, but it was a clean break on the very front of the arm. The sander has a wierd plastic cover that also (surprise) has a small crack. When I asked him how much he would want for all three machines, cash today, he told me $100 for all three. Loaded them up and brought them home. Sander is a 2x48, that apparently retails for north of $2k!

The Vari-slow will be going onto my '46 floor model, and going to sell off the benchtop. The Grinder will be replacing my 1/2hp Commercial block grinder.

Well the 3/16 will just be a sloppy fit on 4.5mm fasteners lol but I'm sure the 10 will find a home.

I made a quick trip to the Tahoe flea this morning. For the second time in two days I found a partial Walden 1/4” & 3/8” socket set. I’ll put the best pieces into one set. Quite a few Craftsman pieces, and an early Erie pipe wrench for research. The longnoses are Klein, the DOE wrench is Thorsen.

Went to one of my usual fleas with my dad and saw this 1/2 HP complete with quench tray calling to me. One corner is a bit bent near the foot, but otherwise the grinder is in great shape. I didn't haggle at $40.

Not pictured are a couple of army-navy store finds: Polish medical tin and US tri-fold e-tool with case.

Went to a big Fleamarkt in another town we haven't been to in years. Lots of overpriced vendors, but some weekend warriors that were reasonable:

Every thing in the first pic was a buck or less:

From the top: SO and one wright, swivel sockets, Proto LA pebble DOE, Proto USA, + Combo, Barcallo DOE, SK 1/4 driver, Indestro Ext. Dunlap ratchet wrench, Hinsdale DBE, A Plvmb empire made driver marked "Chevron" Williams Open/Flair wrench, Armstrong DOE, Thorsen, DBE, and a Vise, clamp on base that MAY be for the Millers falls vise my son has that is missing the base! :headscrat

attachment.php

This pic has things I "overpaid" for (over a buck each...)

Fiskars gear drive loppers, -$3; Magnifier, $2; Fleet 3/8 Ratchet, (deperatly needed grease but no real wear inside so now works smooth as silk!) -$3; Stanley #60 edge drill guide, $3.

I had a garage sale at my house this past Saturday. About the only thing I sold was a 5 pc set of the older USA Craftsman SAE ratcheting wrenches with the plastic edges, a set of 6' aluminum ramps and a pair of nice exterior house lamps.

Nobody wanted any of the big Ridged pipe wrenches or the Estwing hammers at $5.00 each. Hell I couldn't give away the big Kennedy cantelever tool box for $20.00! Didn't even sell a single screwdriver for .25c each.

:headscrat Oh well, everything went back into the garage for another day.

Oh yeah, one more thing...doesn't anybody ask the seller if they could "do better on the price" or "would you take?" Worse garage sale we ever had.

Around here it's pretty much a given that the asking price has some wiggle room built in. If they ask $10, I'll counter with $5 and then we usually meet in the middle. Even though both parties know the dance and how it ends, we do it anyway.

I too had a yard sale this past Friday and Saturday. I did pretty well thanks to an Amish couple and a few other big spenders. I had probably 150 screwdrivers set out in a pile and asked the Amish couple if they needed some. He replied " we use power tools now" we both had a good laugh out of that. One guy showed up that my dad had met at an estate sale a few weeks back and he brought us a big 2" Armstrong wrench which was pretty cool. Today we hit 2 estate sales and found the following: 1 electricalc pro update able calculator. 1 construction master 5 calculator a craftsman power drive set with a couple pieces missing a hand grip strengthener for my rebuilt right arm and a fleet 8570 hammer all for under $3. Im not sure if the fleet hammer head belongs on that handle but couldn't beat the price. ARMSTRONG wrench has been chewed up pretty good by rust but for being free I'm not complaining. The gentleman that brought it is on GJ here somewhere so if your reading this Thank You.ddd5d7998605d70327e3d6b2dfa5198e.jpgab136d8add9f406539fed9b835fd25af.jpg4b0bbc40c585e4d0da70079783c3882a.jpg

I sometimes do that and sometimes just set the item back down - today some one asked $5 for a Fleet ratchet. I dropped it back on the tarp and turned to go, he immediately countered with dropping to $3. OK, deal...

I feel like a traitor to tools.
I'm in the process of doing my first Radial Arm Saw recall.

I went to this estate sale with other things in mind, but the lure of free money was just too much. I got the victim - I mean saw - for $50. Space demands that I choose between the RAS and table saw, and the TS won. Quick before I lost my resolve, I sent off for the shipping box. Now the waiting begins.
At the same sale, in the negotiations for the RAS I piled on some other tools which turned out to be a pretty good batch for $15. A pretty much worthless little tool box with about 15 lbs of miscellaneous stuff, most of which turned out to be good brands. Lots of Indestro flat wrenches, some branded, some not, a handful of =V= Craftsman and a nearly complete set of 1/2" drive Sparta sockets in really nice shape.

I'll make good use of the RAS's stand. It will become the new home to the Walker-Turner bandsaw I bought a week ago. It's probably bigger than necessary, but its bolt-together construction will make it easy to cut down.

And, I almost forgot about this little guy- a Bell System Proto 3/8" angled combo. Only 3 1/4" long. I recall there's at least one GJ member who likes Bell System tools - Jeff Moss maybe?? I could probably be persuaded to part with it.

So I went to a moving sale this past Saturday and didn't find much in the tool department. As I was going through the stuff I was talking to the man in charge and he was telling me about his future move and so on. Then I saw a guy come in and started grabbing all kinds of stuff and making a pile. So I am looking and the man in charge asked if I was interested in electronics, and i said depends on what it is. So we go in the house and I saw the turntable! I've been looking for a turntable and he had it marked for $10 so I grabbed it before the other man that was piling stuff grabbed it. Needless to say the guy that was making a pile was mad cause I grabbed it before he did. While I was standing there i shifted through the records and grabbed some for my daughter. Went back to the garage and we started talking about prices and the guy in charge said I saw you were interested in the little stuff on the bench and so we added it and he goes $20 for all of it? I said add the washer fluid and you got a deal, and he goes deal!

Hit a 70 year accumulation dusty dirty garage only sale on Saturday. Made a big pile and thought I would share this Snap On set I got for $5. I think it is missing a few pieces but the label makes up for that. I don't know why it was packed with grease but glad it was as it kept all inside in great shape. I cleaned the ratchet up just to see what was hiding under all the grease.

My hunch is it was a wartime military repack (often put away for long term storage in preservative), then surplus, and never used since then. I've found several tools and midget socket sets in that condition. If the pieces have wartime codes, I'd put money on it. And yeah, that decal makes that a very special set. Nice find, Marty!

That is a 9/32” drive set in great condition. I couldn’t make out the date codes but probably made between ‘42 and ‘45. Here is my completed set.

Nice shape, has lamp, water tray and nice eye shields. SCORE!!!

I had a busy weekend. I had to work mornings Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I missed the sales on Thursday, and didn't get started Friday until 11:00 AM.

Bernard Parallel-Jaw pliers
Screw starter
Craftsman WF screwdriver
Wire crimping tool. Navy?
Craftsman big brake spoon
Chainsaw wrench
Kraeuter Battery Pliers

Photos 3 and 4: Details of the crimpers

Photo 5: Sale 3 $4.00 total.
Milwaukee Hole Hawg
Spool of magnet wire

The Hole Hawg was priced at $1.00. I asked if it worked, and the seller said it did before his kids borrowed it, and it came back with the cord cut off. He hadn't tried to test it. The chuck worked freely, so I felt I couldn't lose. At home I checked it for shorts and opens, and all looked good. I spliced in a plug and it tested perfectly, forward, reverse, low and high speeds, and it didn't trip the GFCI! All it needs is a good cord and probably add some oil to the gearbox.

More to come.

Continuing Friday's sales -

As I drove to the next sale, I passed one that I wasn't aware of. Sighting a large drill press vise on a table, I stopped. The vise turned out to be a 4" Palmgren 400, and it had two other castings with it that appeared to be related. The only price marked was on the angle plate with the double legs ($10.00) so I asked the lady what the prices were on the other items. She yelled at her husband, who was in the house, and came back with $5.00 for each other piece. So I paid $20.00 for the whole thing. After I got home, I figured out how it fit together, and it turns out to be a milling attachment for lathes of about 14 to 15 inch swing. It is missing the gib that adjusts the slide dovetail, but I can make that from a piece of 1/8" cold rolled steel.

Photos 1 and 2: Palmgren 400 Milling attachment, first as found, then assembled.

Photo 3: Sale #5, $7.00 total.
Tire inflator, I had to free up the guage rod, but works great.
Drain plugs (stoppers) 3/8", 5/8", and 7/8" diameter.
Collins "Offical Boy Scout Ax" with logo. Needs a new handle.

Photos 4 and 5: Details of the Boy Scout Ax.

Saturday, I had to work until noon, then hit the sales again. The first was a farm where the owner had sold and was moving to town. The sale had started Thursday and he was trying to move stuff out. I bought the planes mostly because my wife has several she got from her grandfather that haven't been stored well, and need some refinish. These show me what they need to look like. I paid $45.00 for everything.

Photo 1:
Baker Scaffold caster set
3" drain elbow (for a project I have going)
Winch fairlead
wire brush (needed for a current project)
Assorted drain grates (also needed)
3/8-24 toggle nuts for drywall

Photo 2:
Imported hose reel, damaged, but transfer axle is useable.

Photo 3:
Auger bits
Scissors
3 wooden planes
round plane blade
Knife (for leatherwork?)
Slugger cutter, 11/16"
Taps (new) 1/4-20 and #10-32

Photo 4:
Clamp on vise with 3-1/4" jaws

More to follow.
