Most locals have companies that do nothing but reclaim refrigerant. Mostly do big companies that can't be bothered buying/maintaining the equipment and paying their guys to stand around and let the machine extract the freon. So, they "hire out" the reclaim portion to a separate company. Check the yellow pages.
I'd refrain from calling the BBB or registrar of contractors for recommends, as they'll get your info and could open you up to liabilities down the line if there's any problems with the final disposal.

Almost any HVAC contractor can handle it, are we talking portable units or split systems? If portable and you can take to them it will be cheaper.

commercial portable (super heavy)... those are the ones with quality goodies..

Is there anything I needed to talk to them... how much they usually charge if I bring it to them ?

Any decent HVAC service company should be able to recover your R22, but if you had a burnout they may not want to touch it.

Burnout wouldn't matter to us, mixed refrigerant would be a big deal however.
We sell our recovered r-22 to a company that will remanufacture it, last time I think we got 5 or 6$ a pound, if there is any other refrigerant mixed with it it will cost us something like 8 or 10$ a pound to get rid of, I know this because we had a 100 pound tank of r-22 that somehow got 4-5 ounces of r-410a and we had to pay to get rid of it. Now if we have anything suspect it goes in a small tank by itself until the reclaim company comes.

Yeah, it's like my auto mechanic and used motor oil. They won't let me drop off my oil after I change it myself, because "we got burned once with contamiated oil and had to pay to destroy the whole drum".
The local AC warehouse also refused to take my jug of used refrigerant because it might have leak dye in it, which they said contaminates it. How do you confirm it's dye free? I have to pay to have it analyzed and then pay for burning it if it is. :wtf: Then why do you sell the leak check dye if it's going to contaminate the freon in every system it's used in? Scumballs. I stopped buying from them.
