You see where OSHA is listing #10 in the thumbnail, right? And when you click on the OSHA fact sheet you linked to, it reads Minimum on the left, and recommended on the right. By that, SMAW over 1/4" and over 250A, CAC-A over 500A, PAW over 400A, and CAW are the only ones calling for over #10 at a minimum. Both the thumbnail and the OSHA link don't list ANSI as a minimum, but recommended.

And manufacturers don't recommend 13 at a minimum, as the link I posted was from Miller (a welding manufacturer), which lists them between 10-13. So again, not sure where you get 13 as a minimum.

Found where you got your link, which also says OSHA minimum, and ANSI recommends. Which the website is touting the advantage of an auto-darkening, so not sure it is the most unbiased. https://welditu.com/welding/tips-mig/what-shade-lens-mig/

Not trying to fight, but don't want mis-information going around because people don't read links.

The 13 as a safe minimum comes from the OSHA and ANSI requirements and recommendations in the links I provided. At lower currents a slightly lower shade can be safely used, but unless you are going to think carefully about that every time you adjust the power level or wire speed, I think it is better to go with the overall safe shade of 13.

The lower numbers you reference are the absolute minimum and are not recommended. If you read the ANSI spec (I understand why you may not have wanted to read the spec, since it only available for purchase), it explains in more detail. Basically start at least 3 shades higher than the minimum and reduce if absolutely necessary.

As a practical matter, when MIG welding at a shade below 13 most people will experience some redness and burning in the eyes.

Obviously people can choose to use whatever shade they like, and it's a little scary how many people chose to weld with no protection at all. I prefer to be safe and a little conservative, to use the higher recommended shade, and to have my eyes checked regularly to ensure there is no damage.

Do you need to have a welder to be able to use the welding helmet? I got one for a halloween costume since it was such a good deal.

Some Lowes clearancing Bosch gll3-300 laser levels for $255. Normally sell for $399.00. This is the 3 plane one. Pretty decent price if you need one.

Just a heads up on the sunscreen: it may already be expired. I saw this on clearance at my store about a month ago but all the stock was expired already.
