I have to ask if the person that lives in Vancouver, Washington that slaps a coat of paint on an entire vise and resells them is on here?

Driving me nuts as the person has good vises I'd be interested in, but does crappy paint jobs and doesn't tape off the slide areas or jaw faces. Stripping off paint is messier and far more time consuming than just cleaning a dirty or rusty vise in my opinion.

Wow, that s too funny. Not one of my vises is worth more than $300 probably and I wouldn't trade hardly any of them for that Craftsman. $2025 with $155 shipping. LMAO......... I wouldn't even pay the shipping price for the vise + shipping!

Didn't that guy with the 5198 from ebay just post it here recently?

I'd say he did well.

I agree tho, I guess I didn't drink the kool aid for these vises. I know these vises have a lot of fan boys here, but 2k?? And it's only a 5" vise!!!

Bob- that’s a sweet (130lb) pickup! Great find!

KMS - can’t believe they wouldn’t let you see the shop. There is a railroad museum near me in CT that I keep meaning to check out.

Can’t believe the price on that 5198. Will be interesting to see where it goes.

I made an offer on a Reed 1C on eBay and the guy accepted it. Looks pretty close to mint, with a lot of the original finishing. Dated October 1946. Any idea if the Factory did the lettering in white or if that was done by a PO?

Whatever happened to the guy with a large # of cool vises? He was getting a monster vise shipped from Germany. I want to see pics of it! I think he was from the northwest or maybe Texas or Oklahoma. I really narrowed it down to only a few hundred GJ members.

VISE: I was sorely tempted by that 1C or "10" as he had it, how much of a discount did you get? I don't remember it having a "best offer" on it? You're right, it's minty!

Vise gurus, iron whisperers, fellow garage dwellers, I beseech you. https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/images/smilies/bowdown.gif

Please help me get some info on this Prentiss woodworking/carpenter's vise. I picked this vise up, along with a Richards Wilcox woodworking vise several months ago and in that time I have learned nothing about the Prentiss. It appears to be a model 336. It has a quick release screw. You can see part of the threads are absent to allow the user to reverse the handle about a half turn and then simply pull the jaw open. Extensive google-ing and some deep digging on other forums have turned up no info on this or any other Prentiss wood vise.

If you know anything about these, please let me know! When were these made, are they rare, or do I just **** at Google? Any idea what this might be worth? Did Prentiss make many other woodworking vises? Tell me all the things!

Thanks. Was about a 25% discount. Not cheap, but I’m willing to pay fair prices for mint vises.

Dave, I don't think it was him.---He was entertaining any bid over $250.00.---but he got some flack for posting so he rescinded his post.---And the vise was a different color too.---That was Jreb10.---Here's the links.

I know that I am dumb as a rock and I ain't ashamed to admit it, so that's why I ask questions.---Would someone tell me why some items up for bid on eBay, present the bidders as l***5, 2***r, s***8, and so on, and so on, etc. etc., and then some bidder listings are like that of the 5198, where every listing says, "private listing - bidders' identities protected".---Or is that just the way it's coming across on my computer only.

If it's not just my computer, then it looks like to me like someone is trying to run up the bid on their own item, or as they say, Pump and Dump.

Jmhinkle, like Ecotec said, I'd be very warry of any vise that was 100% painted.---That throws up a flag for me immediately.---It might be as innocent as a new born but I don't like the gamble.---I always come up looser in those deals.

Va, wasn't jreb. Hopefully someone's happy with that new vise!

Speaking of new vises...here is today's pickup.
Don't see hardly any American Scale vises in my neck of the woods, it's my first.

No. 23A, 4-1/2" combo pipe/bench vise. Everything is intact, including pipe jaws, and in good shape. Looks like it has about 6 or 7 coats of house paint on it.

Weighs 87 lbs. and opens 6.5", kinda a beast for a 4.5"

I found an old cast iron kick press stand today. It weighs about 200 lbs so it could hold a pretty big vise. The angle grinder made quick work of the rust.8cf31446e4dff1b0b215c1582e137df6.jpgbdda665cb1d61f1a8e703f816aac0ecc.jpg73d392e68bb7896cd3b5d654f73c16dd.jpg

Hey guys, haven’t posted many of my finds here recently as I have just been posting them to the FB groups. But I figured I would post this weeks deliveries:

6” Holland’s Offset
8” Reed 108
2.5” Reed 102 1/2

I’m down to only needing an 8” Holland’s and an 8” Yost to have acquired at least one 8” vise from all of the major manufacturers so if anyone out there has one they want to part with, let me know! :D

sorry about the suspect basement quality picture but didn't want to carry the Athol upstairs and then back downstairs. got the starrett 926 cleaned up enough to bring in the house and set it opposite the 626. I thought they would be comparable but the 926 is definitely a bit heftier.

Awesome pic Bob! I'm probably in the minority here but my choice of the two would be the 626. What I'd love to own someday is a 628! I love the look of the Athol's. There's just something so handsome about how ridiculously stout they are built.

Now that's not any discredit to the latter Starretts. I know most here would probably drive hundreds of miles and drain their mad money acct to own a 926 but I've just never been a fan of the shape of them. Anyone else like the older Athols better?

Va, smitty, productbob...thanks for the kind words. I'm proud of this vise. Been looking at pics of it on local CL for a long time. Guy had it priced way too high, and kept coming down. Then about a month ago, ****. Ads gone. I was sure it had sold.

I had talked to po once on the phone and he came across as combative and peculiar. Absolutely unwilling to budge on price.

Then yesterday afternoon, I saw his ad back up, but no photo. His number listed, I called and left a message on his answering machine. He called and was again acting peculiar.

Well, he was peculiar but craigslist had auto renewed his ads and he wasn't aware of it. And for some reason, sans photos. He had angrily given up on selling it, So he wondered how the hell this stalker was coming after him. Lol.

He had apparently come to his senses and threw out a lower price by the time I went to look at it...not a you ****, but not bad at all. I accepted, and here we are. Patience pays off.

I have an Athol 618, the stationary version of the 628 and I love it. However I’ve been searching high and low for a Starrett 326 to put on my bench. I have a 324.5 and it’s an awesome vise. Starrett ran Athol with the same kind of precision machining / tight tolerances as they do their other tools.

Chris, from an aesthetic standpoint I am 100% with you, but I really prefer replaceable jaws and so would have to tip my hat to the 926. Sophie's Choice, though.

I don't know, for sure but I assume that either the seller threw a switch for private bidding (All biding is private/masked, so why?

OR after something gets above a certain threshold Eprey does it? (again why?)

Smitty - that stand looks great. Please post pics of the post-rust version, preferably with a nice big vise on it.

Bob - those Athols are top notch. Very nice haul!

Andrew - nice pickups as usual. Especially like that offset.

VA just about every eBay auction I see posts the bidders names that way. Not sure if it’s a private setting or if that’s standard.

I worked on my stand today. Got all the gray paint off and the metal has a nice dark finish. Will still be using some Sculpt Nouveau traditional black patina and metal oil to finish it off. Here’s the before and after pics.

No one has answered my question that I asked in post 73772.---I assume that I'm not the only one that doesn't know the difference in the two types of postings.:dunno:
Is seems a bit suspicous to me as well. My iPad reads private bidder 425>2,000>2,025...32 bids between two bidders.

I've never seen one like that either. I checked several other active auctions for vises I'm following and none appear like that so I agree with Outlaw that it must be a setting that the seller chose. I view Ebay in the app on my phone an this is a screenshot of what I see.7668c1029a420dab5454f4faaf37172a.jpg

I have been resisting buying more vises, but this one was impossible to ignore, especially since the price was only $1.00!

I find no maker's marks, only stamped numbers "3B" and "10B" which would be hidden under the bench when installed.

The front lever serves two functions. If you rotate it counter-clockwise past a detent to a stop, it disconnects the engagement of the rack mechanism so you can open and close the jaws by hand. It also engages a cam to tighten the jaws if you rotate it clockwise.

The dog in the front jaw moves easily and has a detent to hold it upward. It looks like it originally had a handle threaded into it that extended out the front.

Does anyone recognize this vise?

It looks to me to be a sheldon wood working vise. Very much sought after vise by some woodworkers.

Yeah I saw that 81P that was posted. I actually have 2 8” Simplex 81P’s, a Desmond Stephens and a Ridge Tool company.

I’m looking at buying a 3/4” thick 60” diameter round steel table, that way I’ll have something big and sturdy for tear downs and I can take a picture captioned “The Vises of the Round Table” :D
