Prowling the collectibles shops in Mansfield PA this morning...
“Star” Planet Jr - style wrench. Neat. $5 in a bag of otherwise lame stamped wrenches.
Hm. 14” Perfect Handle...$16? More than I have in my pocket, though. And the teeth are worn flat on the dynamic jaw. Oops, $14, and the advantage of shops is, they DO take cards.
At the other end of the spectrum, a NIB North Brothers “Yankee” (pre-Stanley) ratcheting screwdriver priced $65. Ha. No Sale.

Looks very similar to the set I bought and then sold for $250. It was a complete toolbox with socket set BE. I recall it was a tool kit that was listed in the catalog.

Thanks Madison069......I'm pretty sure mine is not a complete dedicated set including toolbox. I'd call it an almost complete set of 1/2 in. drive in a generic Craftsman box, I am lacking the deep sockets. Wow...$250.00 is a sweet sell price, good job. When I first spotted the toolbox, what struck me was that it was still there and of everything in the box, it was the ratchet that really got my attention.

There was a pretty good sale here today, for the estate of fellow who had been a stock car racer in the 1960s. Tons of tools, no crazy deals but fair prices. There were a lot of things I liked, but didn't necessarily need :) so I limited my purchases.

A couple auto body dollies (the hook-shaped one is a Plomb LA), a 6" Diamalloy wrench and a 4" Vise-Grip for my collections of each, and a 0-1" Tubular Micrometer Company / Tumico micrometer (made just down the road in St. James, MN)

Two Diamond Tools slip joint pliers, again for my Diamond Calk and Horsehoe collection, and a couple nice Williams clamps.

Nice finds guys! No sales for me this week, none looked interesting and it is too hot out! Hmm, I do have tools I brought back from our old farm in Wisconsin I need to unpack and photograph.

Highlights from past couple weeks and today:
Coleman aluminum picnic stove
Stanley No. 6 plane
Hasselblad aluminum camera case
Big Elk antler sheds
Atlas dynamite crates
My favorite: 1954 Firestone clipboard

Cool stove, I think that takes a canister no longer made? :headscrat if you can find one guys have sorted out how to refill, and others have made hose adapters to current butane canisters.

Cool horn sheds and clipboard!

Then second sale got me a wooden ladder that I plan to turn into a Christmas village stand for my wife's collection. Hope she likes it!

Do you cut it back and lean it against a wall? And the treads are narrow: do you put on wider shelves?

Interesting day! Still recovering from some heat exhaustion from too much driving yesterday in the heat in a vehicle with no AC! (lessons learned DON'T do that, and spritzing myself with a spray bottle with water actually works quite well for a shot time, but by the time I was home I needed a good shower...

FYY a thermometer I brought said it was around 117 degrees in the cab... 100 and under was fairly manageable, 90 or so not difficult. but over 105 not so much... (Yeah makes sense , a fever over 104 is freaking dangerous...)

But I did go out for while (two posts worth of pics...):

Mostly From the dollar table (I got all this for ten, plus the next pic, minus the purple insulator, which was three):

I thought the hammer head looked quality, and thought I saw some light engraving but I was wrong - id does have "USA" cast under one of the claws
Crestallot dykes, the Needle nose are Boker and marked "US"- Tee screw, probably from valve covers, could be handy, a Plvmb DOE, Old silk lite mantles, A Tru-Fit/Lectrolite DBE, tommy bar? :dunno:
pot hole cover handle, Ratcheting driver - (I've picked up several now and in every case an drop or three of oil and they run smooth as silk!) Old Inl bottle, (also Purple glass) the insulator, and does anyone know what the last odd bit is? (I do - lets see how quick the group is (and HOW does that land in a table full of tools?

attachment.php

In addition; these "flashlight tools" - no batteries, but I think a rat chewed the case and peed on it so THATS outside and probably heading for the trash (anything that could sterilize it will probably finish it of...)

attachment.php

On the way out from this stop I also picked up a Wind up motor for a Victrolla and this cleaning station pump tank - another ten

attachment.php

So a decent first stop!

second was a three day old four day estate sale, the lady that runs it knows me and gave me half off! so 5 each for these!

First this metal box caught my eye, and when I opened it, I'm like; "Mine"...

attachment.php

Here's partly why - Oddest case I've ever seen!:

attachment.php

It's a Prenttis Wabers made Preway - Needs a pump leather at a minimum, and probably a filler cap gasket.

I also got a radio shack amp almost certainly from the 70's,
Edit: yes - 1971 and 24 watts - fairly decent!

attachment.php

and a canvas cot (needs canvas) and is a shorty.

Scoped out a big local auction in a barn about a month ago with old cars, trucks, motorcycles, part, etc with most in need of much work. Tools all over, Snap-on, Williams, Blackhawk, etc.. Craftsman, Kennedy , Snap-On tool boxes......just a whole lot of everything all over the place. Surprisingly there was no house associated with the barn. Didn't find anything that was really worth it to me to sit through an auction so I left to do other things.

Well today I hit the third day of a family run estate sale at a small house about 20 miles away in a different town and come to find out in talking to the gentlemen's son that the barn auction was at his fathers barn/property and now they are selling of stuff at the father's home. Through the grapevine I knew they had a bunch of Snap-On but wanted a good buck for it so I figured I would take a chance and bottom feed for some what I call orphan brands on the rainy last day. From the auction I knew he had some Vulcan and Williams stuff so I was looking for that at the house. I love when they have a lot of Snap-On and Craftsman because I find they are often practically give away the little known brands which I am typically looking for. So pick-ups today:

Vulcan metric sockets and drivers

View media item 95840

And because so cheap, a hodge podge 3/4" socket set with most sockets New Britian with Williams, Herbrand, Indestro, S-K, Evercraft, etc fill ins.
Ratchet is a Cornwell.

Only one decent estate sale worth tools today. Spent $12 on 4 hex key sets (including a Proto and a Snap On), 10 wrenches (Barcalo, Craftsman, P&C, Indestro, SK, SK Wayne and Proto), SK extension, 3 sockets, hammer handle, wheel weight tool, 3 jars of nuts and bolts, and a few packs of brackets, hangers and hasps.

Also stopped at the local Sears that is closing. First week of liquidation sales, tools were 10% off and tool storage 25%. Picked up half a dozen of the US made plastic under seat tool boxes for $47. Didn't see anything else worth going back for when the sales get better. Asked about the ratchet rebuild sets and they were already sent to to the other local store that is remaining open.

Nice haul there. Sounds like a good auction/sale.

Hey Outlaw, I’m always in to hear what a good mystery item is.

Thanks 3Bay, still on my Vulcan kick. Heavy rain today kept down attendance so was able to pick stuff up later in the day of the 3rd day of the sale. Because it was raining so hard I talked to the guy running the sale until the rain let up. He showed me a couple of empty small socket boxes and such where guys dumped the contents and basically stole stuff. In talking to him it sounded like he had a lot of real winners (sarcasm) early the first day.

I guess you are on a kick.

There’s one guy I know of, he does real sneaky stuff like that. Steals the ratchet from the priced set and that type of thing.

I remember one sale where someone removed the whole set of S-K impacts and dumped the green metal box with the price sticker on it in a scrap bin. Sales guy found out when I picked the S-K box from the scrap pile and asked about the price. He gave me the box he was so angry.

Anybody had a hip replacement recently?

JKB

It's some sort of joint, probably a hip.

(my Dad had a hip joint replaced, but it failed after a couple years and was taken out so I've held one in my hands before.)

Wow, wouldn’t have guessed it. :wtf: This has to be a GS thread first.

I can't speak for others but here in Central Texas I don't see that as a deal. Not that I see much Waterloo marked stuff. Kind of your call. If it speaks to you then...

Kind of a sparse day at the Tahoe flea today. A Thorsen 3/8” speeder, some Craftsman, an S-K wrench, Proto and Reed & Prince screwdriver and another WW2 Jeep correct pair of Cee Tee pliers. I’m not sure why I can’t leave those behind.

Hit an estate sale on Friday morning hoping to get the Dazor table lamp I saw in one of the pics. I was second in line. The guy ahead of me was there for some old 78 rpm Jazz LPs. He was told some of the LPs were in the house and some in the garage. He really wanted the Lester Young LP he'd seen and asked me to grab it for him if I saw it. Well, after grabbing the Dazor lamp I spotted his Lester Young. We were both happy campers. Turned out the price tag on the working lamp was only $15. Also, formerly owned by the University of Texas, my alma mater so that makes it way cool! And after hoping for quite a while I'd find one of these Dazor lamps that makes two I've found within the last month. Total price tag on the 2 working lamps? $17!

Hit a guy's woodworking machines & tools sale today. Finally picked up a Stanley #92 shoulder plane! Also got a granite surface plate, a Pfeil **** chisel set, new can of BLO, SAS face shield, couple of motor repair guides, and some lumber which included a couple of white oak planks (2"x48"x13"), Honduran rosewood (2), E. India Rosewood (1), maple, basswood, walnut, cherry, poplar and red oak. The lumber pics are the planks and pieces that were in block form.

They are pretty common to find in the wild and I never leave them behind unless they are really rusty.

I’m going to let Lugz handle this one, if he sees this while he’s traveling. He wrote the book, literally.

Edit.
Here is something he wrote about Jeep pliers in 2015 in a G503.com thread.
“the CEE TEE CO pliers have outstanding validation as a G503 tool through Willys after mid May 1943. In that respect they are a solid choice for any motor pool toolkit. Lacking actual Ford GPW documentation (not talking about supposedly found toolkits, interpretations of photos of other Ford vehicle toolkits, or pre-war supplier relationship theories, but actual GPW factory documentation) that might guide Ford GPW factory toolkit choices, a Ford GPW motor pool toolkit populated with Willys factory toolkit tools (vis a vis, the 2nd echelon maintenance depot motor pool tool bin scenario), such as a pair of CEE TEE CO pliers has, ironically, a higher degree of documented verification than pliers more popularly placed in Ford GPW factory toolkits that have no equivalent verified documentation. Strange, but absolutely true.”

So is it ANY CeeTeeCo pliers, or specifically Jamestown pliers, that are WWII? Also, were they ONLY WWII, or were they also sold post-war? I'll need to check out my CeeTeeCo pliers when I get home.

Some fine scores this weekend, folks! Nothing for me, as I'm down in VA on my parents' farm, working on OSWMBO's "sonny-do" list. Clearing the fence line is hot & sweaty but satisfying work, as some forms of manual labor can be.

Hit an estate sale at a weird house yesterday, half-built and damaged. The had been running the sale for a while, so it was pretty picked over in some ways but I found a few things:

Brushes ('cause who doesn't need those), Lufkin woven "metallic" tape in box, welding pipe pit gage, military-style tool bag, Channellock snap-ring pliers (never been out of the bag, had condensation rust) with tips. I also found a pocket oiler, but it missed the pics.

Snap-on L72 (this was tucked back under some old pipe threading tools) And, back in a box, these:

A Klein linesman's belt and Buckingham climbers. The climbers are a little rusty and the belt has some damage, but it's all there except the extra transition belt. The gaffs need to be sharpened and the leather needs a bit of work if I was going to use the set. I don't need it, as I retired and already have a set, but I couldn't resist. Turns out, the seller was the wife/girlfriend of a deceased lineman, so I made sure that we were good on the price for everything.

I'm guessing a lot of them eventually ended up as war surplus.

My dad was a high school shop teacher, and in the 1940s and 1950s would purchase tools for the school at surplus sales; I inherited my Cee Tee pliers from him, and wouldn't be surprised if that was where he got them. I also have some Bernard pliers I think he acquired the same way.

So is it ANY CeeTeeCo pliers, or specifically Jamestown pliers, that are WWII? Also, were they ONLY WWII, or were they also sold post-war?

I notice the ones Don posted do not have a screwdriver tip on either handle. Maybe that's the salient feature?

Not only can’t they have a screwdriver tip on the handle, they need to be marked Jamestown, N.Y. USA under the Cee Tee rather than the newer pliers “Crescent USA”. They come cad plated, dark finish or plain steel.

Hi Don, sorry, I wasn't trying to question that the weren’t Jeep, but (implied) what markings would indicate Gov issue vs, civ, use? - Maybe they were the same?

EDIT, Should have read on.. Answered!
