The sales tax should be based on the sales tax in YOUR state, and remitted to them. NOT the state the seller is in...

But Yes, its just getting out of hand...

Razor, it belonged to a GJ member and I don't know if it sold or if he recalled it or what, but the eBay post said "SOLD" so that means if someone did buy it, they paid $2020.00 for the vise and $200.00 and change for shipping.---So then they were looking at over $2200.00, and lets not forget the tax that eBay is now charging.---That's another $111.00.:scared::eyecrazy:

Here's the original post by the GJ member.

This is correct. They only charge sales tax for the state you live in, not the sellers state, and only if your state has passed a collection law on out of state purchases. Those of us in Oregon never pay taxes on purchases period. I've had problems with California sellers trying to charge taxes for their own state and have had to send them a copy of their tax requirements to get a refund.

Thanks Shift, that’s my second all time favorite cartoon BTW.

Simpsons man?

Well that was a waste of time......and gas.

Drove 140 mile roundtrip this morning to buy a Reed 2C that I had been resisting calling about for five days. I finally gave in to the urge and negotiated a price of $175, and was assured of no cracks, welds etc. I was surprised shift, trijeff or one of the other north-bayers hadn't snapped it up.
Got there and the first thing I noticed was a 3" crack on the back of the slide - very tight crack, but all the way through. Ugh.

Strange thing, there was no apparent pounding on the top of the slide, so no idea how it cracked.

I thought about offering $100 for it, because it was very nice except for that and it is an unusual model but I just knew I would be unsatisfied with it regardless of price.
The seller was very apologetic - it was his late fathers vise - and says he will relist with a picture showing the crack, but man o man what a disappointment.

Ken - very sorry to hear that. I had a smiliar experience a couple months ago with a Reed 108. This hobby is filled with highs and lows. On to th next one.

Just a guess but maybe seller/retailer in PA was only the store front? She acted as the pass through and the order drop shipped from someone in Washington which makes that state the product originator for sales tax purposes.

I just hate it when you ask "are there any cracks, breaks or welds" and they say "no". You drive 70 miles there and spot in 1 second a crack, then have to drive 70 miles back empty handed with 3 hours less of your life remaining.....

But Kenc, if they answered ''yes'' to your questions, you wouldn't make the drive, and they're banking on you not making that long drive for nothing.---It's the only way to get you to come take a look.---There's no profit in transparency says the New Normal.

This is exactly why in such cases I never tell the buyer how far I'm driving/where I'm coming from. If you let a buyer know you're willing to drive across state for something, you've already started out on the wrong foot and shown your hand. That is when they start getting greedy, considering upping the price etc. Common sense.

Of course.
And he didn't know where I was driving from until the day before.
He'd already agreed a price and told me there were no issues at that point. All the pictures looked good, the crack was tight and disguised by a discoloration line running from front to the back of the slide right on it.
Oh well..........

Went to look at this Craftsman vise 391-5197, I assumed it was Columbian made. That was my first mistake. Not a 100% dead ringer, but close. Marked JAPAN BF in tiny letters on the side of the vise, and bigger letters on the bottom of the swivel base. It even has the pinned-in T-jaws.

Also got this Wards Deluxe Quality exposed screw anvil vise. It looks rough. Missing the hardy. Missing pipe jaws.

On the bright side, both vises with a Snap-on TX72 1/4 locking flex ratchet and a Little Giant steel table, altogether only $40.

PA sales tax is 6%, unless you are unfortunate enough to live in a "RAD" area, in which case it is 7%.

$13.49 x .06 = .81
$13.49 x .043 = .58 unless, you are lucky enough to live in a city which collects it's 1%.
$13.49 x .053 = .714

Looks like you may be a lucky one.....

Dave, I'd say you did real good.---You can probably more than get your money back on the Ward's alone and the rest is gravy.---Nothing wrong with Japan made vises, IMO they are a lot better than a lot of other Asian made vises.---Here's 2 examples.

The first 2 pics are of a before and after.---Not mine.

The 150 is mine.---Both vises are very well built I think.

Dave, I like the Wards you found, and I'm not generally a fan of exposed screw vises, but the anvil makes it as for light work (leather working, rivets and the like) it would be great. Not an anvil for heavy metal forming, but for soft stuff and smaller detail work a great combination!

PGH, Va.'s sales tax is 4.3% and that's not bad, but looks like the tax on my purchase went to Washington State not Va..---Had I been taxed at Va.'s rate, it should have been .58 cents.

Side Note-----Here's a few states I'll be watching to see if the sellers are from even if it's a steal of a deal.

The five states with the highest average combined state and local sales tax rates are Tennessee (9.47 percent), Louisiana (9.45 percent), Arkansas (9.43 percent), Washington (9.17 percent), and Alabama (9.14 percent).

Nice find, that vise is a beast. The fact that is was painted KTM orange is icing on the cake.

For whatever reason orange seemed to be a popular color back in the day, go figure. I’ve got a couple of old Reed vises that I’ve simply wire wheeled and oiled and the come out really clean. Their cast iron seems to take on almost a black hue naturally.

My first response to GJ. I saw your post, MayerMR, on your Reed 405. I found one through Kijiji just west of Toronto. It is huge. Missing a ball on the handle, the non-moving head swivel pin was missing, replace with what looked like an aluminum tube from a ski pole and it was welded to a 1/4" steel plate. I got the plate off, pulled out the pin but had to do some work to get the head to swivel. I made a "ball" on my lathe and a real pin based on the tapered hole it goes in. I didn't look for examples and made the top of the pin so I could lever it out with vise grips or twist it with a pair of pliers. It works perfectly. All greased up and painted and replaced my Woden No 3 that was on my bench. I need to make soft jaws for it though and the handle for the right swivel locking arm sticks straight out the side when tight, so I need to add a washer to move it to a better position.

Thanks guys! I looked at my new-to-me Japanese Craftsman up close a bit. It is marked 391-5197, I recognized the last 4 digits, so Craftsman must have recycled the part numbers some.

I also knew it would be 4.5" jaw, which was correct. It weighs 57 lbs which seems to fit with a Columbian clone, being a tad light (the jaw towers are hollow on this vise too). But it only opens 4.75" which I think is kind of weak.

There is some welding splatter stuck to tops of jaws and a little rust and spray foam residue, but this vise is in good shape. It works butter smooth and there is next to no backlash in the spindle.

Welcome to GJ.

Reed 405 (like most other Reeds) is a very nice vise. Also personally I think size wise, it is in the goldilocks range, it is not too small and not too big, it is just the right size for a garage. I have a Reed 404 1/2 R which is one of my two daily users (the other one is a Parker 974) and I love it.

I am assuming the reason you did not post any photos is that as a new member you have to have so many posts before you can upload photos. In any case it will be nice to see some photos. You know what they say a "A picture is worth a thousand words".

"Super clean" :lol_hitti Reed 404 for discerning and discriminating vise connoisseurs at a bargain basement price

Among featured not mentioned in the AD, nicely brazed draw bar, cleanly sheered swivel jaw pin, missing swivel lock and wrench. Yes this magnificent specimen can be yours for a mere $175

I have to make a CORRECTION to a previous post.---I posted that shipping for the 5198 Craftsman was over $200.00, $212.00 to be exact.---But that shipping was the estimate to me if I had of been the winning bidder.---But the fact is the shipping price is different for every bidder.---Here's the proof.---This was posted by Chrisnazzy in Post 73795, on Page 3690.

Kenc, it's like PghJKB shined a light on for me.---Something I wasn't aware of is that on top of State sales tax in every state, municipalities are also allowed to tack on an extra cut for themselves out of the process, exacerbating the final tally.---Here's what GOOGLE says about your area.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the sales tax in California 2019?
6.00%

2019 List of California Local Sales Tax Rates. California has state sales tax of 6.00%, and allows local governments to collect a local option sales tax of up to 3.50%.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aside from that, you are just lucky enough to live in the land of fruits and nuts, and fruits and nuts are expensive.:D------------No reflection on you Sir.

VA, I have been trying for some time - without success - to get my wife to agree to a move to Nevada. California is a terrible place to live if you work hard all your life and pay taxes.
