Razor, it belonged to a GJ member and I don't know if it sold or if he recalled it or what, but the eBay post said "SOLD" so that means if someone did buy it, they paid $2020.00 for the vise and $200.00 and change for shipping.---So then they were looking at over $2200.00, and lets not forget the tax that eBay is now charging.---That's another $111.00.
Here's the original post by the GJ member.

The sales tax should be based on the sales tax in YOUR state, and remitted to them. NOT the state the seller is in...
But Yes, its just getting out of hand...
Thanks Shift, that’s my second all time favorite cartoon BTW.
Well that was a waste of time......and gas.
Drove 140 mile roundtrip this morning to buy a Reed 2C that I had been resisting calling about for five days. I finally gave in to the urge and negotiated a price of $175, and was assured of no cracks, welds etc. I was surprised shift, trijeff or one of the other north-bayers hadn't snapped it up.
Got there and the first thing I noticed was a 3" crack on the back of the slide - very tight crack, but all the way through. Ugh.
Strange thing, there was no apparent pounding on the top of the slide, so no idea how it cracked.
I thought about offering $100 for it, because it was very nice except for that and it is an unusual model but I just knew I would be unsatisfied with it regardless of price.
The seller was very apologetic - it was his late fathers vise - and says he will relist with a picture showing the crack, but man o man what a disappointment.

Simpsons man?
Ken - very sorry to hear that. I had a smiliar experience a couple months ago with a Reed 108. This hobby is filled with highs and lows. On to th next one.![]()
This is exactly why in such cases I never tell the buyer how far I'm driving/where I'm coming from. If you let a buyer know you're willing to drive across state for something, you've already started out on the wrong foot and shown your hand. That is when they start getting greedy, considering upping the price etc. Common sense.

That's what it looks like to me too Outlaw.---Looks hinky at best.---I'm in Va. and don't mind paying Va. sales tax but I ain't going to help keep up every states budget in the union.---I have the option of not purchasing.---I think I'll use it.

SmittySeems like a good time for some Prentiss vise ****, the top four shelves are all 3” class vises.

Went to look at this Craftsman vise 391-5197, I assumed it was Columbian made. That was my first mistake. Not a 100% dead ringer, but close. Marked JAPAN BF in tiny letters on the side of the vise, and bigger letters on the bottom of the swivel base. It even has the pinned-in T-jaws.
Also got this Wards Deluxe Quality exposed screw anvil vise. It looks rough. Missing the hardy. Missing pipe jaws.
On the bright side, both vises with a Snap-on TX72 1/4 locking flex ratchet and a Little Giant steel table, altogether only $40.![]()

Nice find, that vise is a beast. The fact that is was painted KTM orange is icing on the cake.

My first response to GJ. I saw your post, MayerMR, on your Reed 405. I found one through Kijiji just west of Toronto. It is huge. Missing a ball on the handle, the non-moving head swivel pin was missing, replace with what looked like an aluminum tube from a ski pole and it was welded to a 1/4" steel plate. I got the plate off, pulled out the pin but had to do some work to get the head to swivel. I made a "ball" on my lathe and a real pin based on the tapered hole it goes in. I didn't look for examples and made the top of the pin so I could lever it out with vise grips or twist it with a pair of pliers. It works perfectly. All greased up and painted and replaced my Woden No 3 that was on my bench. I need to make soft jaws for it though and the handle for the right swivel locking arm sticks straight out the side when tight, so I need to add a washer to move it to a better position.
Reed 404 for discerning and discriminating vise connoisseurs at a bargain basement priceThe five states with the highest average combined state and local sales tax rates are Tennessee (9.47 percent), Louisiana (9.45 percent), Arkansas (9.43 percent), Washington (9.17 percent), and Alabama (9.14 percent).
