Keep it in cash and hit the Pawn shops for some deals. But my wife could care less what I spend money on, as long as I help with the kids and the laundry

X3. Works for me. If I had to choose though it would probably me a US General Tool cart, Miluakee 3/8 or 1/2 impact and probably the M18 drywall screw gun.

Hypothetically speaking, if having $500 and not letting the wife know about it to buy tools is a thing, I’m taking that money to a divorce attorney. I won’t live that way. Period.

As Ssdave says, you need to do what's right, whether that's spending on tools, or on something else, or saving.
Your wife is going to blame you for everything that doesn't work out, especially if it was her decision. That's just the female version of human nature. So, consult with your wife, get her input, then do what's best for your family. <b>Don't</b> lie about what you're doing, or keep it secret, or meekly say ``yes, dear,'' and give in..

I won't get into the marriage/family advice. If I had $500 to spend, and didn't have an immediate need for a particular tool I would look into more storage/organization options. My garage is far more cluttered than I like. Not sure how far $500 would get me realistically though.

I bought a Milwaukee hacksaw the other day. We were building fence for her horses (that I hate). Long story short ...it was the perfect tool for the job. If she ever asks about it, I'll say yeah...that's the tool I used to fix your horses fence. Moral of the story....buy what u want, use that tool to build a project for the old lady and your in!

Many years ago I bought two KZ1000 projects from a friend for a few $hundred. Had him drop them off at the hangar & bought them home in pieces over about 3 months or so.
Two years after that I assembled two KZ1000's "from parts I have laying in the garage".
Wasn't too difficult to pull off as I had about 3 dozen Kaw's at the time.

Let's think of it this way= You have a gift card that HAS to be spent on tools (leave the wife out of it). What do you get?
I'd probably go a bit deeper into my M18 collection. An angle grinder would be handy, as would a jigsaw. Throw in a few higher amp batteries, and $500 is gone.

Not to get off topic on this thread but the issue with gift cards are it locks you into that store. If you collect 1000.00 in Lowe's cards and then the a special buy pops up at Home depot, your kinda screwed. I just bought the special buy at Home Depot on the 7000# quick jack for 1155.00 with free shipping. 400 or so off but this forum would not let me post it or reply in the special buys thread since I didn't have enough posts.Everyone else seemed to be looking at the 5000 model at Costco when the 7000 was a deal if you needed it.

I had a coworker who was about to get married. He was seeking advice about how to manage money with his wife. I told him my wife and I each got a weekly allowance that was totally unaccounted for. No justification needed. We spent it on whatever we wanted. He asked if I was ever tempted to open a secret credit card and buy things for myself with it. I told him it would only work for the first month. After that, I’d have to pay the bill somehow. He hadn’t really considered it.
I had a similar conversation when I was in the Army with one of my soldiers. One of my female troops was appalled that I would limit my wife like that. “Sir, you’re really going to let your wife go hungry if she forgot to pick up her lunch bag on her way to work?”
No no no no no no...it’s nothing like that at all. It’s simply a savings tool. Cash evaporates from our wallets and it’s easy to blow $100 a week when you just go to the atm and refill it when it’s empty. This way, it makes you prioritize that you want to have one nicer lunch a week or two lesser lunches or whatever else. This is how I bought my Skil router.

I can't believe people have to hide money like that, both myself and my wife have a no questions asked allowance from each paycheck to do literally whatever we want with. That has nothing to do with food, house needs, maintenance, work clothes etc.
If you have to hide an extra 500 from your wife, you need to reevaluate the marriage as whole.

If the OP really wanted to ask the question “If you had $500 to blow on tools, what would you buy”, he would have. The point, as I understand it, is what would you buy that wouldn’t be noticed, as a new lime green HF 44” parked in the garage would.
So I’ll answer the question as if it were asked without being secretive. I’d buy a new EGO 56v string trimmer and EGO 56v leaf blower. I’m sure the wife would notice.

She works....she makes money...she knows the family priorities.....and so do I.
We don't ask permission....nor do we spend money we don't have.
But....ya know? I'm over due for buying another gun. I see it as an 'investment'.

I'm retired on a fixed income so buying tools is a very thoughtful process. Much like it was for our fathers, or for you younger guys , grandfathers. The OP was in the same spirit.
I'm looking at the 20volt DeWalt skilsaw , they got the blade on the correct side for us right handed guys. As if I need another skilsaw.
