Epic thread, I may have found this late, but I'm in for the duration.
Related/un-related: We were sort of neighbors at one time, I grew up in Westfield, NJ from 1971 until I left for college in 1987. Our dentist was in Plainfield and if you recall, our high schools had/have an epic sports rivalry (I attended many a Thanksgiving Day football games).
My first college room mate moved from Mercer County (Pennington to be precise) down to Millville at one point; I went and visited him down there years back.
Anyway it's always interesting to run into similar geographical folks from my youth.
Good luck with the homestead and I've got this thread bookmarked.

While I may have been born in Plainfield, I lived in Scotch Plains and fully lived the rivalry with Westfield.
As of tonight I have not done a thing on the shop. We are dealing with a cost/design issue on the house with the builder that has been taking all of my time. The ball is in the builders court right now so I have the next 3 days to work on the shop before I have to head up to NJ for a week.
Tonight I had to dig and install ( a short section) of 2" conduit for the house service entrance so that it was in place before the siding crew started siding the house. I will dig and install the rest of the conduit run at a later date. After a full day of work, getting that pipe in the ground just about did me in.

According to my wife and kids, I never grew up. I lived in Scotch Plains ( just off Mountain Ave) until I graduated HS and then moved to Pt. Pleasant. I moved to Cape May in '87 and to my present location in FL 10 months ago.
So here is the problem with the house build........
Laura and I both like to cook and the kitchen is one of the places that we want "Our way".
The builder had an allowance of $10,200 for kitchen cabinets. They used Wolf cabinets and wolf had a very limited selection of finishes and only a 5 year warranty on the cabinets. We specified KraftMaid cabinets as that is what we used in our last kitchen and we were very happy with them. The builders price for KraftMaid was almost $14K over the $10,2K allowance in the build contract. We will get it worked out and find a compromise but the last 2 days were crazy with Laura in NJ and the builders and I here in FL. Laura and I will get the kitchen we want, I just don't want to pay $24K to get it. We'll get it all worked out one way or another.
After my afternoon meeting with the builder I got to spend some time on the shop build. We have a weather system coming and the weather guessers are doing their usual doomsday predictions.
Since I only had 2 columns and rafters up, I need to get more metal up to tie it all together. I managed to get another set of columns and rafters up and tied them together with the first girt. Then I got the 2 back wall columns up and bolted down. Even if it rains and blow tomorrow I feel confident that what I have up will be safe. Between tomorrow and Sunday I hope to get the rest of the steel frame done before I head north on Monday.
On a side note, the fireplace insert got installed today and they started siding the outside of the house. I'll get some pictures of that tomorrow.

Wow 24k for KraftMaid. I used KraftMaid on my house 19 yrs ago, hard to believe cabinets have increased 400-600% since then.

I agree. Seems way more expensive than it should be. We installed KraftMaid cabinets as well, with all the Blumotion hinges and drawer slides, four years ago and it was ~$14k and that included an 8' island.

I'm just finishing up remodeling my kitchen and master bath vanity. Brought Canyon Creek cabinets with me from Washington. Local Tallahassee showroom wanted way too much ($7k+ more) for pretty much apples to apples. I've done LOTS of Kraftmaid, they're usually a few dollars less than Canyon Creek. My entire package (there are also 2 large bookcase cabinets on sides of fireplace) cost just under $16k. All the roll-outs, Blumotion, soft-close hinges,100% plywood boxes, furniture-finished exposed ends. Are countertops included in that allowance ?

My alarm went off at 6:15 this morning and as I turned on the coffee pot I heard a strange noise. I opened the door and there was a woman setting up a pancake compressor. I made my coffee and went outside to meet the siding crew for the house. It's a husband and wife team and they said that they could only work a half day as they had an obligation to be someplace in the afternoon. I got home at 1:30 and they were gone but they had 1/2 of the entire house sided.
About a half hour later a van pulls in and its the painting contractor coming in to look at the job. The painters are also a husband and wife team that appear to be in their late 60's or early 70's, and tell me that it will take them about 5 days to do all the caulking and two coats of paint.
I got a late start on the shop but I did get some more girts up. I also got the interior columns shook out along with the last set of exterior columns and rafter ready to go up tomorrow.
I hope to get a good day in tomorrow as I head back north early Monday morning for a week.

That house contractor is leaving you in the dust
You did good with the GC and his great subs, makes the building experience that much better.
Maybe you can work something with Toolfool and just tell your GC to credit the kitchen.
Only thing is the kitchen is needed to CO the house.

Thanks. I like it more than the cheap import cabinets that were in there (added 'before' pics).
Shorty lets me use all his tools. I have a shop full of his stuff.

My GC is great (even with the kitchen cabinet issue), the project manager is who really makes things happen and we are so fortunate to have him on our side.
I spent a few hours today playing with the big erector set. I got the rear end wall interior column, girts, and rafters all up. Thats it until I get back from NJ next week. I have 10 more big pieces to go up and then the roof purlins. After that its insulation and tin.
What I have standing now represents about 15 hours of working solo. Up the ladder, down the ladder, in the machine, out of the machine, I'm tired. My forks are just a little too short to get the last 4 rafters in place so I borrowed this little fork boom, it's not the greatest but it got the job done and beggars can't be choosey.
I expect to see the house sided and painted when I get back next week.

We made big progress today even though I'm in NJ.
With much gratitude to Toolfool and his friend Frank out in Washington, we have resolved the kitchen cabinet issue on the house. Toolfool and Frank took my Kraftmaid layout and gave me a valid quote to use in negotiations with my builder.
Here's the story I got from the builder ( I have a certain amount of trust in the builder but not 100% ). The builder gave the quote to his cabinet supplier and the cabinet supplier said that there was no way he could sell this package for the quoted amount. Since I had a valid quote from a Kraftmaid dealer, the guy called Kraftmaid and got the district sales rep involved.
All of the sudden the price of the Krafmaid cabinets comes down to a reasonable upgrade charge from the builders grade Wolf in the contract.
Toolfool and Frank saved us a significant amount of money and Laura and I are truly thankful for their help. The builder is happy with his margin on the cabinets, and Laura and I are happy that we are getting the kitchen we want at a reasonable cost. Everyone is happy.

I'm heading back down south early tomorrow morning. I should be back to the grove by lunchtime and plan on getting the last 2 columns erected before dinner.
I will be getting a all terrain scissor lift for a week rental on Friday to facilitate installation of exterior tin.
Craig said he plans on attending next weekends erect-A-thon. If Shorty makes the trip he will be holding a training class on scissor lift operation and you must possess the certificate he issues prior to using the lift. If Shorty doesn't make it to the seminar than it's game on for whatever you want to do with the lift. Maybe we could have a pool to see how many old fat guys could fit on the lift and still make it go up.
Either way, I'm flying back down tomorrow.
Here's a pic of Pop (that's me) with new grandson Leland Joshua, the newest clan member.
