I took a spill at work today, my bad knee clipped a trailer tongue and my legs folded and I landed on my shoulder. It took me a few minutes on the ground to get up and I'm pretty sore. I should have just relaxed for the rest of the day but I'm not that smart.

I got home from work and started fastening the base angle to the foundation. Since I had pre drilled the angle, all I had to do was drill the concrete and set the angle with the 1/4" drive pins. I drilled 81, 1/4" holes in the foundation 1-1/2" deep for the pins. Took me about 3 hours and I was really whipped when I was done. The rake angles go up tomorrow and then its time to hang tin.

I got this HILTI TE24 years ago at an auction and today it was worth its weight in gold.

So I had a somewhat productive day at the Grove today. I'll touch on the positive things first.
I got the last 3 pieces of base angle fostered down to the foundation. There are 2x4 angles that fastened to the purlins on the gable ends and I got them installed. Then there was the 3x3 outside corner angle that needed to be installed along with the 3x3 angle filler pieces that needed to be fill cut and installed.

After getting that all done I broke out the trim crates and located the drip edge that gets installed on the bottom of the tin. Next up was locating the proper insulation for the end wall. I got half way through the pile of insulation and still did not find the rolls I need to get started hanging the tin.

There were a few showers today and I didn't want let the insulation get wet, but tomorrow I will spread it all out in the house and re-stack it as it will be needed. With any luck I will get one wall of tin up tomorrow.

I think I need to install a live feed web cam for Shorty to keep me on the safe side of things. I somehow managed to put one of theses #12 self drilling screws through my index finger. I left lots of DNA on the man lift and concrete. I guess its just not my week.

I almost forgot to mention that the shop now has a door, no walls, just a door.

Ouch! No blood so it’s all good. I’ll put in the requisition for camera feed tomorrow morning.
Like Duker’s shop, now with the door installed, you can sleep easy knowing the shop is secure.

The next more painful thing than driving a screw through your finger is smashing the living f%#^k out of your finger with the end of the nut driver when it slips off the screw and finger is still holding the screw.

Been meaning to ask if you tourqed all the bolts correctly?

Weight of tech tightening bolts:

Up to 180 lbs- 36” ratchet

Up to 220 lbs- 24” ratchet

Up to 270 lbs- 12”

Craig I thing I got the proper torque with an 18" ratchet, it's been a long time since I've been on a scale but the "click" in my elebow has been calibrated within the last 6 months.

Did you get a buyer for your NJ house? Store shop stuff? I think the crew has room to store some of your stuff. House also has a nice big great room. That way you don’t use her garage.

I didn't fall off the planet, but I have been busy so here's the latest update.

Laura came down last week and saw her new house for the first time, she likes it.
Laura and I spent the weekend digging trenches and putting pipe in the ground. We dug a little over 350' of trench and put in almost 500' of pipe.

We pointed the truck north after I got home from work on Wednesday and we got back to the NJ house about 2pm on Thursday afternoon.

Friday I got a few things done on the honey dew list and then we drove up to see our daughter and new grandson. We got home after dinner and I went to work in the shop.

Today I spent the day breaking down the shop. I got the big bench split in two and shrink wrapped everything before loading it on the trailer. I have a full trailer load and have a 12PM reservation for the ferry heading south tomorrow. My friend Jack is driving with me and will stay at the grove for a few days before flying back to NJ.

As you can see, I still have a bunch of stuff to move.

It's been over a week and so much has happened that I'm not sure I can recount it all accurately.

I'm not sure how much I had on the trailer on the trip south but I figure is was somewhere between 10 and 12K#s. The class 5 hitch on my truck failed about 300 miles into a 900 mile trip. I pushed my luck and made the next 600 miles with a severely unsafe trailer hitch. I made it home without incident. I'll post some pics of the failed hitch once I get it off the truck in the next few days.

I have been running around like a chicken with no head this last week picking up tile and lighting fixtures for the house.

The kitchen cabinets got delivered on Friday and the installer worked all day Saturday on the install. I looked at what he had done at the end of the day and called the PM and fired the installer. I'm a mechanic, fabricator, weldor, and wood is is a 4 letter word to me, but even I could tell that the kitchen install was not right. The Pm called me back and set up a meeting at 8am this morning. I showed him my concerns and he was glad I pulled the plug. We have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow am with the cabinet distributor, the installer, and the installers boss. It's not about the mistakes but how you recover from the mistakes. I'm sure we will have a good resolution.

The first 2 pics show the top of the wall cabinets. There is crown molding that needs to go on top of these cabinets and adding filler strip is not acceptable. The last pic is of how he went looking for a wall stud, all of the studs are marked out on the concrete floor.

A cabinet installer without a stud finder must be a hack. I’m thinking I’d tell installer boss this guy is allowed back. Hope all gets resolved.

Jake, the installer is an apprentice and got sent out on this job because it was considered a simple install. One or two bumps that compounded took this install out of the simple realm. Jake's boss came out this morning and had all things corrected within 2 hours. I had a good talk with Carl (Jakes Boss) and Carl will be out later this week to install the crown moulding. I told Carl that Laura is one of the most critical inspectors he may have ever met when it comes to crown, he assured me that he could pass Laura's muster.

The house build is taking way too much of my "off" time and I'm not getting enough time to spend on the shop. After dealing with the kitchen cabinet issue and then dealing with the tile installers and making a design change that had me driving 2 hours to get a different pencil trim, I got back on the shop project about 3:00pm.

Hanging the insulation is quite the challenge when you are working solo. I was up and down on the lift at least a dozen times before I got it right.

I made a story pole stick out of a piece of moulding that lets me pre-drill all of the holes in the tin so that all the screws will line up. The insulation is the biggest pain in the **** but after getting the first piece up and hanging the first piece of tin, I now have a better way of doing it that should speed up the pace. Just a few more days until DST ends and then I will have to figure out a way to work under the lights when I get home from work

I remember looking into this thread when started, but hadn't clicked on it lately (OK, it's been years). I became intrigued by it being on page one all the time lately and opened 'er up. Glad I did!
It's been an enjoyable two hours watching Girt work like dog, sweat like a rented mule and bleed like a stuck pig.

Takes me back to the days when my build was going on and I also had a camper onsite. I hauled my water in a plastic garbage can and spongbathed in a little tub about 24" in diameter. M-F was back at the old house with real plumbing though...

The house build is at a point that takes most of my spare time, with Laura 1000 miles away it all falls on me. Every day this past week after work I have been either running errands to get stuff for the house or meeting with tradesmen to discuss how I want things. I made a 3-stop run to Jax after work today and I think I have everything on hand for all the trades to work next week.

On my way home I stopped at the JAX naval air station and picked up a nice 12 year old single malt to enjoy while I admire the work I plan to accomplish on the shop in the next 2 days.

The AC plant was installed yesterday and they finished the electrical trim out today. The kitchen cabinets have all been installed CORRECTLY and they have templated for the counter tops that should be installed late next week.
The tile work in the guest bath is done and they put a good dent in the master bath today.

I need to get the septic system installed next week but I think the lack of daylight after the day job might be an issue, I might have to rent a light tower.

So with a clean slate for tomorrow and Monday, I hope to get a bunch of tin hung on the shop.

On a good note, we are in negotiations with a buyer on the NJ house.

Shorty I AM the septic contractor listed on the permit. I have never installed a septic system but I do know that **** runs down hill so how hard can it be. I dig a hole, bury a tank, add a Dbox and connect a bunch of chambers in a drain field. IF I do it wrong, the inspector will tell me what to fix. I save a bunch of money.
