I knew you’d like it. I’ve never had paint loss with Evaporust but then again, different kinds of paint behave differently. If you’re expecting to preserve old paint, be cautious and check on your parts frequently. Also, if you’re reusing Evaporust, realize that the chemical action slows. Also, temperature greatly affects the speed of rust removal. Cold temps such as below 60F. basically makes the reaction stop.

I have been using Evaporust for a while now...My children chipped in and bought me a 5 gallon can for my birthday :)

shift: who's the old boy you got to hold the bucket for your picture? :bounce:

An interesting feature on an old Peddinghaus Record (supposedly) steel vise: Wipers :)

Those dawn offset vises always make my head spin, can't look to long, it's like looking into a dimension man is not supposed to look at.

So here's a really big problem I have (LOL) - just like everyone here I have multiple vises in my garage and I have less vise stations than vises. I'd like to be able to everyone in a while change a vise in my vise station and not having to make more holes in my workbench. Has anyone tried to resolve this problem?

One end of my bench is like swiss cheese! I've now mounted a 1/2" plate over it, used some of the old holes to support the plate from the underside via 1/2"-13 tapped holes and I drilled and tapped the plate 1/2"-13 for my user C1.

There is always the receiver hitch style mount on the front of the bench. You could interchange vises easily if you don't mind it sticking out in front.

I wonder if maybe a T-track mounted parallel to the front of the bench would work?:headscrat You might have to drill the rear hole differently but that wold be all in a straight line (assuming all of your vises are three hole mounting) Disclaimer - I have not tried this I just thought of it. I know it wouldn't be as strong as through bolts.

You could bolt ALL of your user vises to standardized size steel plates each of which would have the same hole pattern to match that pattern on your bench.
Sure it’s lots of work and would require lots of steel
plate, but after all... this IS garage journal. :)

Honza, here's what I do, basically what Shift said but to a thick piece of wood instead. Then just use clamps to affix it to your bench wherever you want. Have one setup like this with a cleat in the bottom so I can use it in my Workmate.d85f2f6eaefb6ed2e3bfd73a3529ad42.jpgde76072a9c167f5ddb56e3e0a13f5247.jpg

I think the general consensus is that the other 519x's are quite a bit more "common". At this point I think it would get pretty tough to keep everything straight with that many different models. It's kind of up to everyone here though. If the majority wants all of the models included I will do my best to keep up the thread.

Hit a good estate sale this morning. The husband had a big shop with lots of old stuff machines, engines, tools, Model Ts, etc. Among my haul was this Reed 104-1/2 vise. It doesn't appear to have any issues except maybe the handle might be a replacement. It was on a big dimensional lumber workbench with a tag that said it went with the bench but when I asked if they'd separate it they asked what my offer was. I said $80. Sold! It's got 2 patent dates Dec 2 1912 & Aug 11 1914. Anyone got an idea on age? I'll need to clean it up as it's got some caked on grease.

All,
I posted this Reed 104-1/2 about 3 weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone knows if it's stamped with a manufacture date or can give me an idea of a period for it based on the two patent dates on the side "Dec 24 1912" and "Aug 11 1914". I didn't see any response to the age question.

Thanks!

Either adapter plate(s) or a steel plate with tapped hole where you need them, one set into the bench...

What the hell? I never saw that style until the broken one popped up on eBay this week. Something else to be aggravated over. Never find anything around me, but over priced, trashed examples of anything. Congrats on that one.

Ive had a hot streak lately, I was given a "broken" 1765 wilton / snap-on (only needed rear pins) and now got this. I was on the hunt for a few vises today but over the course of 10 days I was ghosted 4 TIMES by the same seller!!! So this win today makes me feel better about all the time wasted with the other people. I say the same thing in my area, quality vises are hard to come by. I bought this from the guy who removed it from a factory over 30 years ago in Connecticut.

Congrats on the Nu TYP, Bagged.---They are getting hard to find.

Bastel, that is an interesting feature on the Peddinghaus.---Slide debris sweeper.---Got to wonder if that was factory or an add-on.

Sleepb, got to agree with Rusty, I would love to have an offset, even if they are unconventional.

Thanks for letting us know, 454.
She was a great person and a great asset to the machinist, vise repair and collecting, and many other communities. We’ll miss her.
