Thanks to everybody. I appreciate it. I think I forgot to post my favorite find of the day. This is the first one of these I’ve ever found in the wild!

Just a really quick stop at a small flea today. This was the only item that caught me eye. No key...so I left it behind.
Just how difficult/expensive might getting a key made be? Is the stamped number sufficient information?

Due to lighter than planned traffic, I got to this estate sale way early but they let me in and I got to browse the tools for nearly an hour as the only customer!

They had two boxes of $3 items--I chose eight and offered him $20. He quickly agreed, so I asked if he would throw in the 18" monkey wrench (marked as $10) for a total of $25. Sold!

The Coes wrench (from 1888-1902 & weighs 6.5 lbs!)
Two whetstones (small one is from Austria)
Old no-name Rock Hammer
Buell Bros. Multi Tool with full complement of bits
Stanley-Bailey transitional plane No. 23
Stanley 6" Sweetheart Square
Stanley 4" Square
Stanley hand drill with 5 fluted bits

Estate3.jpg

Next stop had a 5/8" Jacobs drill chuck from Kawasaki, a 5.5" Lutz file handle, a 3" wire cup brush (soft) and a pair of welding gloves--all for $6

Estate2.jpg

Earlier in the I week got a Bucket Boss with the seat and all the items below for $6.

Millers Falls No. 43 coping saw
Millers Falls No. 98 T-Bevel
CST 18 oz. plumb bob with leather carrier and gammon reel
Klein Tools 3255 Bull Pin
A couple of S&K wrenches, one CM and three from Taiwan
Assorted bits, drivers and screwdrivers, including one Par-X (the big one) which was badly abused to the point the blade is now forked.
There was also a lot of miscellaneous BS that wasn't worth keeping.

Only one estate sale this weekend. Spent $52 on a Keen Kutter axe, mix of 20 Hinsdale and Bob Cat sockets, two Irwin adjustable bits, two files, North Brothers Yankee screwdriver, utility knife, some wood for some new tool handles, pair of US made tongue and groove pliers, and a pair of Bernard belt pliers.652a4edc2620f7be316b9ddf2aa87d02.jpgcd128dee0876797e6fb63a0e9c5c7883.jpg9d97901b06510c5b29dcf3b256a4457f.jpg0c50dc2ea01b214cb8f644b3af0ce22c.jpg940ed439dd9084d151568c2cb1fc637f.jpg621d70a8d500725975e3ff19b3d5ccf4.jpg41fc4ddfb366a431f26ecac3fd7a92d5.jpg635962fe64c0742a51081ff2925f7aa0.jpg

Went to an estate sale in the neighborhood this morning. I got four Jorgensen bar clamps and two wood handscrew clamps, but the most interesting item may be this little Lincoln Model 591 'Lubrigun' grease gun I got them to toss in with the cost of the clamps.

Estate, sale, pretty picked over but found a cache of USA drill bits, small taps, and extractor bits along with a 60 bit HUOT index.

When they were examining the bits to make a price I bundled in the Craftsman -V- 1/4 drive deep sockets shown, Barlow lock-blade knife, and shop towels (Packaged By: Winston Salem Industries for the Blind).

$20

Cleaning things up and found that the 7/32 extra deep socket is a Snap On MVS 7 instead of a Craftsman. Probably would have tripled the total!

Please educate me on drill bits. On the bits I can read USA and the fact they the bits all of them have either HSS or HSCO so I think they are quality but is there a way to tell the manufacture? A lot of them have either UB or UB1 on them, mean anything?

Also, at the top right of the second picture, what are the two drill bit like things with the machine screw ends? I saw that end first and thought they were inflating needles.

The two bits with 1/4-28 threads screw into some types of drills. I have a 90 degree angle air drill for aircraft work that uses this type of bit. Extensions were also made for this type of drill bit.

That's an ice tool for splitting large cakes of ice quicker than with a single ice pick. When I was a kid, we had an icebox at the cottage and we'd go down the lake to a grocery that cut ice off the lake in the winter and stored it in an ice house. He'd go in there and cut a piece the size we needed using one of those tools.

Here is another I've found with almost identical font.
It's hard to find a good pic. But look at the lower part of the image if you can see it. They do Moore Tools in an oval, and the O's are different top to bottom. Kind of neat. I run one of these jig grinders at work occasionally, I'll take a pic of the tag on the machine Monday if I remember. Edit: nevermind, I had one lol.

I was only able to hit one ES yesterday, as I had to do some work (what is that all about?) But there were a bunch in the area, and today was half price day for most. So, here is what I found:

The first stop was the farthest away, and a woodworker lived there. I found a General saw vise in the box, chisel sharpener, two pounds of powder, a Ray t-handle and some General do-hickey. Also, they just gave me a bunch of books!

All of that cost me $9. Next stop was on the way I was going. They didn't advertise tools, but I found this:

A working Heathkit osiloscope. No idea what I will do with it, but it was $5.

The next two stops were in the same town, and the first one advertised a woodshop. I picked up the following here:

A bunch of misc. electrical connectors, Herbrand ignition pliers and a P&C breaker bar. The bar is very old, as it doesn't have a part number. $1 for all that. That place was weird also. The shop was in back, and inside all the walls and floors were covered in cartoon characters. With the tools in there, it was kinda creepy, until I figured out that it must have been a day-care before a shop.

Anyway, went to my last one, mostly because it was close by. I don't like the company that ran it, and unless they have stuff I really am interested I avoid them. But, it was close, so what the heck. I actually found some good stuff.

An almost complete Proto socket set, two Williams c-clamps, and a Craftsman Saltus wrench. $10. As I was leaving I got to thinking about it, and she overcharged me by $.50. Big surprise with this group. Oh, well, I have been undercharged enough times that I will not worry. Then, I went for Chinese buffet.

bmw, if the "General do-hickey" in the first photo refers to the cylindrical item with the knurled knob and lots of holes, it is the clamp that holds the pointer to the shaft of a surface gauge. Useful for dial indicators if the hole sizes are appropirate.

I found those same belt pliers at the Tahoe flea this summer. There is a thread about Bernard pliers in the vintage section.

Latest finds from the weekend. Picked up the Matco WCL wrenches 3/4, 11/16, and 5/8, plus the 2 curved Mac wrenches. Paid $8. I had to dig them out of a box full of other random toolbox **** but for all my digging I couldn't find the rest of the set. Especially for that price it was a little disappointing. Now my OCD is kicking in, so if anyone has some extra wrenches to fill out the set, PM me I'd be interested.

The second picture is a cup from a pretty famous honeymoon resort in the Poconos that is now defunct. Its been abandoned for at least 20 years and is famous in its own right for being abandoned. I thought it was random to find the cup as it was from the same seller of the wrenches in another box of junk. I didn't honeymoon there but with its popularity in the urban exploring world I thought it was a cool find. I'm sure someone on this forum spent some time at the resort in its heyday.

It's like an eerie time capsule in place of the heyday of the honeymoon hideaway era, Jack! I grew up near there. I was an ice hockey player and we used to drive to Penn Hills to get our skates sharpened because the guy who worked at the Penn Hills rink was the best skate sharpener around. This was in the 70's. He retired up there from Long Island and used to sharpen the Islanders skates, as well as the skates of the players who played for the Ducks in the old EHL. Guys would drive for an hour to get to Penn Hills just to get their skates sharpened and hear his stories.

One of the house liquidators had a mess of tools at the flea today. Mainly 60's and younger, and it was spread out in multiple bins and mixed in with other household stuff, which is a PITA, but the first keeper I found pawing through it was a CRAFTSMAN C series 1/2-inch drive socket and then a few cad-plated CORNWELL, which made me go through it all with a fine tooth comb. It probably took me a good half hour just to put these dozen pieces together. Everything to the top of the APCO-Mossberg single offset in the pic is cad-plated CORNWELL. The pieces to the left below it are two Chrome-X-Quality (Duro) and two CRAFTSMAN C series. The decaying leatherette ignition wrench pouch is empty but I have a lot of orphans that need a home.

Got out this morning to a car show/flea market with my dad, and treated him to lunch at burger king. I picked up a fairly large cincinnati tool C-clamp.b590cfdce6107c2beb8cd795e7824e91.jpg

I looked it up online and looks like it was functional until a few years ago ? I saw the brochure picture and it looks like they could have filmed an Austin power’s movie there [emoji15]

HAHA! An apt comparison. If the Catskills (which are more famous) are lobster, than the Poconos were more like 'poor man's lobster'. But it's been closed a lot longer than a few years. Check out this site, which does a very clever 'then/now' photo montage. Keep scrolling.

Had a fun day at the flea.

Picked up a number of misc. ordinary tools today. A few interesting pieces to note.

ETF cutters (seller said tin snips???) Not a very popular brand except among a few Canadian members. Upon realizing they could be folded up I had to go for it.

There are a number of YouTube videos where people explore the abandoned Penn Hills resort. I watched one of them a few years ago, it was quite the place.

Nice finds, gents. I was off at Scout training, but I didnt miss much wrt sales around my place. Driving home from an Eagle Scout project this afternoon, I slowed down in front of an old rundown house that somebody is cleaning up. The property was full of junk and overrun withh weeds until recently. The cleaners have been making a "Free" pile at the end of the driveway and tonight I scored these two 10" trowels that look barely used.44bd050eb6dc250f9351928fa1ae439d.jpg

Couple more finds.

Rounding the corner of an aisle toward a tool dealer, first thing I spotted was a T handle looking tool sticking out. What brand I thought? Well, 2 in 1.

Herbrand 1/2” extension and a Craftsman =V= cross bar. My third cross bar find of late.

Had to laugh due to the name engraved . So, happy belated birthday to Don, and I’ve found your lost cross bar. :lol_hitti

Then, how about some mystery horse logo pliers? Searching led me to Kraeuter with similar handles. Any thoughts guys?

Some random finds today: He-Ne gas laser, Weller pencil iron, Tek 'scope probe, Diamond Calk adjustable good quality hacksaw with cast aluminum handle and tubular construction, and mystery S-K box meant to hold ??? vertically. Any ideas? Inside is an old saw handle and something I can't identify.

Hmm...can't attach pics to post. Have to use album?

Had a fun day at the flea.

Picked up a number of misc. ordinary tools today. A few interesting pieces to note.

ETF cutters (seller said tin snips???) Not a very popular brand except among a few Canadian members. Upon realizing they could be folded up I had to go for it.
There's several of those in the Wrenching News past auctions, they say they are "saddle bag wire cutters), and one description said maybe military related.

I think I saw somewhere those boxes were for film reels.

Went back to the same estate sale where I got the drill bits and 1/4 drive sockets.

At that sale they had a 1/3 HP Craftsman Block marked $70 and I had offered $40 and wasn't able to buy it, figured that would be gone but there was a fire extinguisher he wanted too much for and thought that might still be there along with what ever else got stirred up once things were thinned out.

Ended up with this bundle for $45

  • Craftsman 1/3 HP 397.19580 (missing lamp)
  • Badger 13 lb Halon 1211 Extinguisher, full charge with factory seal.
  • VACO USA 8103 Needle Nose Pliers
  • Marvel Air Tool Oil (full quart)
  • Tung Oil Finish (full quart)
  • Black Jack Elastic Crack Filler (unopened gallon)
  • Lifetime supply of steel wool, and a peach basket.
  • AND Prince Albert in a Can!
