Strange, another of these german "super" vises popped up on the german classifieds. But this time with photos of a catalogue. Explaining the benefits over a normal blacksmith vise.
  • they are free standing blacksmith vises, bolted to the floor
  • free standing allows work piece to be clamped from all sides
  • called tiefspannschraubstock (google image serach!) "Deep clamping [blacksmith] vise" because the screw is pushing from the outside so it's not in the way when clamping on a tall piece (depth goes from ~16" to 25.5" for the big model)
  • one side is slotted so pieces can go through
  • one steel jaw can be removed (on slotted side?) for bending things 360°
  • cast steel (other says malleable iron + cast steel)
  • jaw width starts at ~10" and goes up to ~14"
  • jaw inserts can be made by the blacksmith if desired

I guess such a vise would be very desirable for a serious blacksmith shop.

So You're blaming the guy that got the anvils dropped on him for ruining them? :lol_hitti

Wile E. not only owned the anvils, he set and then usually tripped the traps that ruined both himself and the anvils. :Violent:

I was a child of the '60s but I remember my dad would always watch this cartoon with us--it was his favorite.

Wile E. could have dropped vises too, or just used an ACME shotgun.---But no, he liked anvils.---Kind of like a ***********.

There are people that actually practice Anvil Launching.---What goes up must come down.

Launching with gunpowder? Now, now, wasn't usually rubber band, it's been too long... A good rubber band will work fine with the pictured ones :)

I actually have a pair of Roadrunners that live down below my house. We also have coyotes in this area. The Roadrunners are fairly tame around me since I ran off a fox one night that was down below their nest that was after them (Roadrunners were chirping out warning). I consider them two of my friends (and they are supposed to kill rattlesnakes) so I looked on internet to see if there was any food I could leave out for them. I unfortunately found out Coyotes can actually run faster than a Roadrunner, which really bummed me out. So far the Roadrunners have eluded them. Life in the frontier...

I can do you better, I YouTubed the resto here's the link: https: //youtu.be/qytlJuF5COU

Nice video and production. If I ever decide to repair the swivel portion of my parker, I'll have to keep in mind how much of a pain that pin will be to get out. Especially since mine is broken off and mushroomed in the hole.

I have a Jet vise with 5-inch jaws and a very different style than what you have pictured. I bought it new in the late 1970's, and haven't used it a whole lot, but man, it's a nice piece. I got it because it was advertised as being made from tool steel and manufactured in France, but memory is foggy beyond that.

Two classics to be sure...’65 Mustang and Reed C series in matching paint colors. I assume that is Rangoon Red?

Long ago I bought my wife a ‘65 Mustang (from the original little old lady owner from Sacramento). That one was Twilight Turquoise. It’s gone now. I sold it to a younger guy who wanted to restore a car exactly like the one his dad used to own and surprise him with it for a special occasion.

Latest acquisition. Not quite a monster but probably the closest I’m getting to owning a monster vise. Ridgid No. 60PN 6” jaws weighing in at 88lbs. Looks to be made by Columbian including the fact that it’s hollow. I can’t seem to find it on the spreadsheet, could this be my first contribution to the list?!

Sorry for the crappy pics, I’ll post better ones when I clean it up.

Thanks Shift. Close on the car and color but it is a '66 in Vintage Burgundy (color code X). Excited to own this one day and then hand down to my son (along with the vise, of course!).

Bastel that is a beast of a vise!

Jeff- your Reed is a stunner, fabulous work

Ken- there is only one Smitty  but thanks for the thought! been focused on getting some sort of organization, pics are vises that aren't clamp-ons, users or weigh more than 100#. had to get rid of some unimportant stuff (anything not vise or tool related) to make some room.

It was made by Sambre et Meuse of forged steel. I didn't know jet relabeled those, very cool.

Thanks Serrat. I think that since I already sold you my baby there would be a lot of questions about adopting you as my son ;)

I’ve got a buddy that found a reed 406 R that he’s restoring. He sent me picks that the collar was broken but I assured him that it’s supposed to be a 2 Pc set up. What I’m not sure about is whether the main screw should be welded to the meatball? Any insight would be appreciated.

Smitty,

I have a Reed 206R where the meatball looks the same. I was told the meatball is cast onto the spindle. Something like the end of the spindle is threaded for grip and the meatball cast over it. Works fine in any case. Pic of mine are attached.

Bob, could you please tell me what this vise in your collection is?

Saw one on the classifieds, not in my region, but I've been curious because of the round shape. Says "Patd" in a rectangular 'crowned' shape? I think it's the same.

Thanks Jeff. It was one seller and I was able to get him down quite a bit for both. The older 600 is hardly used.

It’s an old Reed, I know they’re not very collectible but the price was right.

Two Wilton 600S vises, they have 6” jaws and weigh in at 163 lbs each. The vises were purchased together from the same seller.91324d25ade598532064ee8f055bd85a.jpgdf76de519f2382af9009d401dcbb3b11.jpg47af78a5693d69458d43318d948160d3.jpg1dfd1b310bd9f51f916a9569742cf846.jpg
