Nice score Smitty!
Those Starrett Athol vises are certainly top of the line. I’d put them right up next to Reeds.

I'm going to be that guy and ask if anyone knows the trick for getting a Wilton cap pin out of the nut inside the vise that doesn't involve a drill. As best I can tell, the pin's holes weren't symmetric. Still can't post pics, but I'm sure this is easy to visualize.
I just finished cleaning up the Starrett vise that I got last weekend. This is my first one and I must say this is one stout well made vise. The vise is a 924 1/2-C it has 4 1/2” jaws and weighs in at 85 lbs. it’s the proverbial brick shythouse, I can just imagine what the 6” must be like.

Thanks bob, post some pics of the 926 when you get a chance.
Zkling, It is hollow, I found that to be an odd place to skimp on cast iron.

2 nice pick-ups there Vise.---How far did you have to travel round trip?
Jack that is a nice stout looking bench! I like the Heuer vises and would like to own one someday. Looks great!

I just picked up this Prentiss no.20, it has 4 1/2” jaws and weighs in at 65 lbs. This is by far the oldest Prentiss vise that I own, I believe it to be a 1st generation swivel jaw machinist vise. The plunger is date stamped 1887 +/- I’m still trying to figure it out.
Thanks guys, that solves the mystery. I have around six plunger style bases but this is the first with the stamp on it.
Saw this month old classified ad. I can't see any markings and it doesn't seem to be a York or Wilton vise. Jaws are 2", opens a bit over 1". Price seems a tad high, but it is shippable.
Wow, that's quite a lot. Those small screw on vises are usually less over here, and they are either super vintage of unknown origin, or east german. Or more expensive Leinen / Boley. Back opening. Still nobody wants most of them, so they 'rot' away on the classifieds.Made by bison. Pretty good quality and the last one I sold went for over $100 on the bay. I’ve got a really nice one I wouldn’t sell for less then $175 so that price isn’t ridiculous at all.
Rusty, I have five that have the plunger style swivel lock besides the one I posted today. Three have top lettering and two have grafitti script, they all have replaceable jaws. I can tell the #20 that I got today is first gen by the shape of the dynamic shelf support and the cast in jaws. This is also the first meatball that I have seen with this exact design in my collection.Out of curiosity how many of those are replaceable jaws versus cast in?

Smitty- I dig that Prentiss combo vise. And that’s a hell of a deal on that Starrett too.
I finished up the Prentiss 58 yesterday. The color is Burnished Amber hammered by Rustoleum, which I think looks nice with the stellar set of KMScott replacement jaws. Next up will be mounting it on a big stand.
Also, for those asking about the Parker 978, I haven’t forgotten about it. It actually started to flash rust under the clear metal oil. So I’ve wire wheeled it and applied two new coats of black metal oil (see last pic), over which i’ll apply sculpt nouveau clear guard and wax. Hopefully that will seal it well before I mount it on the stand once and for all.
