Thanks Shift. Yeah I’m a believer at this point, they don’t come up often here but I’ll definately be watching.

I'm going to be that guy and ask if anyone knows the trick for getting a Wilton cap pin out of the nut inside the vise that doesn't involve a drill. As best I can tell, the pin's holes weren't symmetric. Still can't post pics, but I'm sure this is easy to visualize.

There is a good video on YouTube using a Allen wrench to do what I believe you are describing from the inside.

Shift - thanks for the lighting idea; your setup does a great job of highlighting your excellent collection!

Smitty - Your 924 1/2 looks awesome  Wholeheartedly agree with you and Shift on the quality of the Starretts. The 926 is my only vise that really gives me pause when it needs to be moved

I just finished cleaning up the Starrett vise that I got last weekend. This is my first one and I must say this is one stout well made vise. The vise is a 924 1/2-C it has 4 1/2” jaws and weighs in at 85 lbs. it’s the proverbial brick shythouse, I can just imagine what the 6” must be like.

Is the dynamic support shelf hollow on that one? I was surprised to see a hollow support on a 924.5 vs the solid support on the older 625.

Thanks bob, post some pics of the 926 when you get a chance.

Zkling, It is hollow, I found that to be an odd place to skimp on cast iron.

Local vises drying up at the end of the year. Thank God for eBay to get my fix.:spit:

It is a Stanley Victor no. 744 clamp-on for $17. The clamp pad is missing, handle tweaked, otherwise looks solid.

Va, yeah I’m sold on the quality and this one is in like new condition.

Dave, it’s nice to see that there are still deals to be found on eBay

Bob, that’s a beast, thanks for posting. There aren’t many 205 lb 6” vises around.

I guess technically in structural analysis, the load is carried at the extremes of the neutral axis in a bending case, so they decided to save on the volume for casting shrink issues? It just surprised me that it was hollow on the 9 series, as well as the pinned spindle nose. I didn't think the 6 series were pinned.

Thanks to a heads up from Smokeshow, I have my first Craftsman 519x swivel vise - a 5197 with 4-1/2" jaws that was listed for $40 earlier this week but I was unable to meet the seller until today so I offered $60 for them to hold it until today.

The jaws are a mess and will require careful restoration, but the rest of it is in excellent condition.

Did some driving today to pick up 2 vises: 1) a very clean Lewis 19, w/ 4.25” jaw, swivel base and swivel jaw. Didn’t see it on the spreadsheet, but this is a nice example, and 2) a Parker 435A, which is in very nice shape, other than the fact the nut is welded (need to find a replacement) and missing the wrench. But the jaws are crisp and the casting is otherwise clean. Here’s some pics of both:

Hey guys, iv just started diving into vises and it’s pretty addicting! I just picked up this mint Reed 204R and figured I’d throw some pics up of my own for once. Have heard everyone rave about the reed vises and had to see what they were all about. Date code shows 7 of 56’

Vise- couple of very nice finds

Dlavallee22- welcome to the group and congrats on the Reed, it's a great vise to start with! Brave man to set the vise on a wooden living room coffee table; my wife "may" have objective lol

I just picked up this Prentiss no.20, it has 4 1/2” jaws and weighs in at 65 lbs. This is by far the oldest Prentiss vise that I own, I believe it to be a 1st generation swivel jaw machinist vise. The plunger is date stamped 1887 +/- I’m still trying to figure it out. The vise has been well used but is in remarkable condition for its age. The pin doesn’t seem original but it fits perfectly and I’ve seen this style before in photos. The seller took $60 for it.cbc643720ab69b8e20dbab398d13d09e.jpg4815406dfea9642254449e7c30004c5f.jpg489f067df34885a4fc9a5ed4efd6106c.jpgb211aa85f2c10c972f53f8887049a74f.jpg

The date will be 1877 same as the small prentiss vises. It’s the patent for the swivel base. So yours is probably pre 1900. 9f435fb4567f69ff5c2da43590d9cbc9.jpg

Thanks guys, that solves the mystery. I have around six plunger style bases but this is the first with the stamp on it.

Saw this month old classified ad. I can't see any markings and it doesn't seem to be a York or Wilton vise. Jaws are 2", opens a bit over 1". Price seems a tad high, but it is shippable.

Out of curiosity how many of those are replaceable jaws versus cast in?

Made by bison. Pretty good quality and the last one I sold went for over $100 on the bay. I’ve got a really nice one I wouldn’t sell for less then $175 so that price isn’t ridiculous at all.

Wow, that's quite a lot. Those small screw on vises are usually less over here, and they are either super vintage of unknown origin, or east german. Or more expensive Leinen / Boley. Back opening. Still nobody wants most of them, so they 'rot' away on the classifieds.

Found some info in this thread: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6147098&postcount=49653. Thanks to that I realized I saw the 6x mm version once before, had this cryptical name PJWp something.

Rusty, I have five that have the plunger style swivel lock besides the one I posted today. Three have top lettering and two have grafitti script, they all have replaceable jaws. I can tell the #20 that I got today is first gen by the shape of the dynamic shelf support and the cast in jaws. This is also the first meatball that I have seen with this exact design in my collection.

I found an amazing 211 this weekend btw.

Here’s the 211 in as found condition. There isn’t a hammer mark on it and the slide edges are pretty crisp.

Smitty- I dig that Prentiss combo vise. And that’s a hell of a deal on that Starrett too.

I finished up the Prentiss 58 yesterday. The color is Burnished Amber hammered by Rustoleum, which I think looks nice with the stellar set of KMScott replacement jaws. Next up will be mounting it on a big stand.

Also, for those asking about the Parker 978, I haven’t forgotten about it. It actually started to flash rust under the clear metal oil. So I’ve wire wheeled it and applied two new coats of black metal oil (see last pic), over which i’ll apply sculpt nouveau clear guard and wax. Hopefully that will seal it well before I mount it on the stand once and for all.
