Do you leave your vise outside?

I've got a very sturdy stainless steel work bench that I keep outside. I am thinking of permanently putting one of my Craftsman vises on it. I could keep it greased and sprayed down with WD40, possibly cover it with a bucket or something. Anyone else do something similar? Any issues or concerns? Thanks

I left my Craftsman vise I bought new about 1979, outside on a workbench where I got good use out of it, until my home was burglarized, and they stole it and an aluminum diamond plate utility trailer I had.

Thieves should be dealt-with severely.

First, yes to Fluid Film, and no to WD-40 outside.

Second, I would not leave a vise out that has an exposed screw. If the screw is covered, then that helps. But be sure the screw and spindle bushing are well greased.

Last, an iron vise outdoors on your stainless workbench will probably lead to the workbench rusting.

keep it covered when not in use. Nothing lasts forever. The only place a vise stays like new is in a box on a shelf. Use it and it will get dinged and scratched. That is Ok.

Does a vice mounted to the back bumper count?
They last almost as long as the service truck without doing anything special other then using them.

Yeah, I have a Yost 33C in my backyard, under the eave of my garage. I had a black plastic bag over it, but sometimes gets blown away. Currently, it is not covered. Hopefully will build a little canopy structure in near future to protect it from rain.

I even splashed some paint on it recently. I clamped a paint roller that had gotten stuck, LOL.

It's a working vice. Not a problem for me.

I have my Prentiss No 52 mounted outside in the elements. I'm in Wisconsin so we see almost all of the elements too! I have a flat piece of galvanized that is a few inches longer and wider then the vise as a roof. Drilled two holes in it and attached a u bolt to it. So I just set the metal roof on the vise with the u bolt in between the jaws and clamp down on the bolt with the vise to hold it in place. Works like a charm.

The pics are great! I'm getting some good ideas, maybe I'll put the vise on a stand instead? Or maybe I'll put a piece of plywood between it and the bench? I also have a bench grinder I'd like to rig up some sort of way to quickly bolt to the bench when I need it. I hate grinding stuff in my garage.

I have a near new 4" rock Island that lives on my front porch, attached to ~12" walnut log.
I just spray it with whatever is handy, used cable lube this week.
No issues. Have to clean a little light surface rust off now and then.

I bolted a piece of 3/4 inch ply board to the bottom of my bench grinder and then just clamped it in the vise.

Do you have a photo? I don't believe I'm visualizing this correctly.

No no Vises should be like painted purty colors and stored indoors maybe even on a shelf...don't you ever read the vise thread :D

We had a monster one out on stump up at the orchard for many, many years until someone stole it.

We got a new used one from the flea mkt now to replace it

Although maybe not what he's talking about I do have a hitch mount for a vise that fit's into a 2" receiver, kinda like this one.

Yes, seen that done with a HF manual tire machine too, Slick Idea!!

Here's my bench grinder in the vise before the vise was broke. I also have my buffer set up the same way.
Nice!!

They will last a long time outside especially if regularly used. WD-40 for cleaning not for protection any longer than a few hours. Living on the damp left coast I had one outside for several years that only needed attention when it went untouched for about 5 years. After cleaning it up to a degree far below perfect it worked again as it should.

Leave the vise outside but bring that fairlane inside for some tlc

I'm in the middle of a 70 Cyclone GT right now. The Fairlane is next, put some epoxy primer on the Cyclone last night. Fairlane's body is full of body filler but there is no rust under the car. Can't wait to start on that thing. Cost me $4,000 and it's a driver.

Just got done pressing apart a big old Reed that was rusted solid.
Screw came right out, but had to press moveable jaw out of the body.
It’s going to live on a big outside fab table.
Plan to coat slide with spray graphite and hose it with Fluid Film.
I do like the oil pan cover idea!

ALL: I haven't read all the posts, but I'm going to put a big Reed 4c outside and find a truck's oil pan or make a nice cover for it. then if i need to use a vise out there for something big or small I should have all the vise i'll ever need. My plan is to clean it up a bit and put BLO on it before I set it outside with it's old tire drum stand. it sat in the middle of a huge steel fab shop for years as their go to vise and other than a grinder ding on top it's in pretty decent shape.

I also have a Zyliss vise that I use outside that clips on the side of a deck, stairs or sawhorse or just a 2x4. I suppose i could mount it to a vertical board if I wanted or needed to. it's pretty handy and only issue with it that Zyliss might have solved with their newer models is the handle for tightening and loosening is a bit hard to use.

how many of you prefer Fluid Film to BLO or another rust preventative?
