It's looking good. Aftering watching the video, I would suggest thinking about getting a screw gun holster. Pretty cheap and may save you some time and hassle.

Im on the last wall and the pockets on my jeans are still holding up. I don't want to have to do any more of this type of work to warrant a holster purchase.

I have had one of those hitch predicament before. You just throw those underwear away. Keep on keeping on and you will be there soon enough.

I'm pretty sure I quite thoroughly wet through most everything I was wearing when I made the first stop and saw the hitch

Just watched your video, Mac and I need a nap. Shop is looking good and I commend you for wanting to do it yourself.

I need a nap too, I just never have time to take one.

Well it was a productive day even though it doesn't look like much got done. I got all of the trim cut and installed around the overhead doors. It actually take more time to remove the plastic covering from the metal trim than it takes to measure and cut the trim and install it. I had to install the rake angle on the partition wall and that meant notching the angle for all the roof purlins. Getting the last wall ready for tin was time consuming but the tin will go up fast as its not all full sheets. I finished up the day with 2 sheets hung.

A boneless rib eye, baked potato, Brussel sprouts, and an arrogant ale finished off the day.

I'll give it hell tomorrow

Steak is for workers, Safety Supervisors are on a different meal plan.

What I thought would be an easy day was not so easy. Even though I was not working with mostly full size panels, Every panel had to be notched for the purlins. Up, measure, down, mark, cut, up, drill, screw. This process was repeated many times.

At days end I was 3 panels short of finishing the 4th wall. I just texted the day job about taking another day off to work on the shop.

Mac:

I saw your comment "but the tin will go up fast as its not all full sheets" and almost replied to disabuse you of THAT notion, but I thought "Why discourage him? He'll find out soon enough". From my recent build, I know that no sheathing goes up faster than that which is hung straight from the supply stack!

One question: Are you pre-drilling the holes for all the screws, or just the ones on the outer layer of the lap joints? The TEK screws drill pretty quickly through the sheathing and secondary steel (primary steel is another matter). That would save you one step, anyway. I know this is late for the walls, but could save you on the roof...

Dan, the out-swing entry door is mandated in the Florida building codes, with very few exceptions. Hurricane force winds will blow an in-swing door open with the roof lifting soon after the opening is made. The door also has to prevent wind-driven water intrusion. On the down side it means a screen door is rare in Florida.

Is this something new? I live in Florida and all my doors open in. House, porch and garage.

Thanks for not bursting my balloon Glenn.

I'm pre-drilling everything. The SDS screws that came with my building are not top shelf. If I don't pre-drill, every third or fourth screw gets work hardened and is a throw away. While it takes more time to pre-drill, it's less aggravating in the long run.

Rick B. and Shorty, I spent way too much time going though Florida Building codes and have come to the conclusion that every rule has exceptions and every county has its own interpretations or amendments, especially in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. When Wilma was blowing its hardest I had to push hard to open the man door on my garage. All of the exit doors in my house open out or in the direction of egress. It makes sense to me to do it that way but because my house was built in 1988 it isn't up to the post-Andrew codes except where I have upgraded things like garage doors and gable-end braces.

I really like those top-to-bottom threaded rods in the walls at Mac's place but I'm going to live on the edge with my rusty J-bolts.

Soooo close!

It was windy today and those last 3 panels fought me to the end, but the wall tin is finally done.

The weather looks good for the next 6 days and I plan on starting the roof on Saturday. Laura flies in this Thursday and she'll be here to supervise.

I have just a little less than an hour of daylight left when I get home from work. I'll be using that time for the next few days to work on the septic system for the house.

Congrats. I bet your happy to have walls done.

I'm so friggin happy the walls are done. I'll elaborate more on that shortly.

Now you need a rope and a strong magnet for hauling the sheets up on the roof.

I still have the little man lift for another month, I'll figure out a way to use it in ways they never thought of.

Or find a tall guy

So I ended Monday with being 3 panels short of finishing the walls. I took Tuesday off from the day job to finish.

When I needed to cut a panel out for a door opening instead of measuring from an assumed lap joint, I took a small scrap piece of tin and laid it on top of the previous panel and marked where the cut needed to be with a sharpie. This worked great and gave me nice fitting panels around the doors ..........until the last panel. I went up in the man lift to mark the scrap piece for the cut and when I came down to mark the panel I inadvertently turned the scrap template 180*. I marked the panel and cut it and didn't realize my mistake until I raised the panel up to install it.

I was pissed at myself for being careless. After thinking about how to fix my error without extra material, I ripped the 7" mistake of the panel, re-cut the door opening and installed it. After I got the last 2 panels installed I came up 3" short of reaching the corner of the last wall. Fortunately I had a full length pice of panel that had been excess on another wall. I ripped it down to 3" and it looks like its supposed to be there.

The other mistake I made was using the "inside seal strips" on the bottom of the wall tin. The prints showed it being used but it was an option. After completing the walls and getting ready to install the roof I realized that I had no more inside seal strips to install the roof with where it was not "optional"

I called the building suppler I bought the building from and told them of my mistake. UPS just now dropped off a box of inside seal strip to put the roof on with. I'm glad I bought my building where I did.

Measure twice and still cut 4 times, been there. Handling that tin alone is a huge chore, well done on being able to do it without more helping hands. For the roof panels if they are all going to be the same have you considered pre-drilling the entire stack at once or 3-5 at a time? This is what we did when putting the roof on a couple of houses and and it went very slick.

If you pre-drill multiple sheets, make sure that you clamp them together before drilling, or the bottom sheets won't match the top sheets.

Nice job on the meat gods burnt offering. That looks like the way I like 'em. A "severe" searing on the outside{but not burnt} and dark red in the middle. Then...devour like a savage while hot!
I think I'm going to bust my **** on the yard this weekend and then find myself one those "offerings" to burn.{ for the meat gods of course}
Excellent progress on the shop too.

For anyone worried about security with a exterior door that swings out, just drill and tap for a set screw on two of the hinge pins, if placed correctly there will be no way to remove the pins without the door being open & backing off the set screw, hinges with that option can be bought also.

Thanks for checking in to all.

With Laura here for the week most of our time was dedicated to the house build, making decisions about the interior finishes, and meeting with the builders to discuss some of the finishing touches.

While I thought I was ready to start installing roofing panels, there was still a little bit more iron work that needed to be done on the overhang and partition wall. I got the last of the iron hung. We made a story "strap" to layout and pre-drill the roof panels. I spent yesterday afternoon building and testing a jig that bolts onto the forks of the bobcat that will lift the roof panels in place to make it a one man job for me later next week.

I fly back to NJ tomorrow morning for Thanksgiving with the kids. I'll be back home at the Grove the following week when I plan on getting the shop roof installed before Laura comes back down on the 10th of December.

In our meetings with the builders today it looks like our house will have a CO the first week of January at which time Laura will move down here permanently.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

The title of this thread mentions my "Dream Shop".

Well I'm here in NJ for Thanksgiving and that is where my dream shop that I'm escaping from is located. I built this 40X40X12 pole barn over 13 years ago and put a lot into it over those years to make it my dream shop. Now I'm tearing it apart so that I can move everything to the new shop 900 miles south.

I have 17 wall mounted Rubbermaid cabinets filled with 13 years of stuff that need to be emptied, removed from the wall, and packed up to head south.

You tend to accumulate a bunch of stuff over the years and you don't seem to get the full grasp of how much stuff you have until you start packing it up to move to a new location. Needless to say I gave away a ton of stuff that I haven't needed in years but will be sure to need the moment I get everything moved to Florida.

I have 2 more days of packing to do before I head back down south. In addition to all the wall cabinets and their contents, I still have 2 lathes, 3 mills, 4 drill presses, a full array of welders and sheet metal machines to pack up and move south. Then there is the loft above my office in the shop, I think I have several other machines and an El Camino stored up there. I think building the new shop in Florida is a little less that half of the labor required to ESCAPE from MY DREAM SHOP.

Good luck moving. How are you transporting everything? I had to move some stuff out of state. I just rented a little u haul trailer. It was barely big enough. Just curious, you have way more stuff than I do. Safe travels.

Laura just reminded me that here in NJ Lowes and HD are both a 3 minute drive. In Florida Lowes and HD are a 20 minute trip. 6 minutes round trip VS 40 minute round trip, maybe I should be more careful of what I give away.

Thanks for making me think Willie

And of course the thing you DIDN'T give away, but transported 900 miles will be in that tub that you didn't look in until AFTER making the 40 minute round trip to HD/Lowes to buy another one!! :)

I don't envy your move Mac. I only moved about 8 miles and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Moving big pieces of equipment flat *****. I can't imagine moving across country.

Best of luck.

I know what you mean Mike. The moves “down the street” seem easy in theory but after a million trips back and forth...not so much.
