It's interesting to compare your 8d Crown machinist chest with my 8d Crown machinist chest Don. Mine obviously has all the Kennedy traits. Lid supports, locking pins and lack of dimples. It would be interesting to know if Sears was sourcing these boxes from two different OEMs at the same time or if there was a change at one point and if so, when that was.

IMG_5590.jpg

I think Sears was buying the boxes from both Kennedy and Waterloo at around the same time. They probably insisted that the resemblance be very close so their catalog listings would be accurate for both. 406Rich’s box above has both the dimples by the lock and the two pins retaining the front cover so who knows on that one?

I think that's why I find Craftsman so interesting to collect. Lots of major OEMs and every time I think I have something definitively figured out, something crops up to slap me down.

I don't really think of the crown top era as collectible so much as usable, but I have been half-way working on this set for a while.

There are a bunch of wrenches, mostly dbe in the bottom. Crown top, even though it is older than me is working tools, so there is CT stuff all around the shop.

Definitely usuable bmw! Is that 1/2" or 3/4" drive you're carrying in there? I had an old tombstone CM box like that but gave it to my son. I think he uses it for paint brushes. I need to find one just like yours for my 1/2" drive Craftsman tools. Very nice!

My 2-1/2 year old Granddaughter helped me clean up this Crown box before I brought it home from her house. I dropped off a less rusty, more modern Craftsman box to replace it. Here it is with two other Crown boxes being used to store the Champion deArment/Channellock collection.

Those little lathes were made by the AA company (Ann Arbor company) They are referred to as the Craftsman 109 or the AA109. I have a Heritage badged one.

Here's a nice auger bit set that my Dad had bought probably early '70's. Most of my woodworking tools were his and a few from my Grandfather.

Just acquired this near mint condition dowel jig. I think the habitat restore is on to me tho. Seems like any boxed craftsman tools have been going up in price when they get em! Lol. That's what happens when you stop in enough for them to know you! Even had original tag and receipt with it.

Hey Don, nice collection of old Craftsman “crown” era boxes. Here’s a few of mine.

Wow, Jim. Two of those in the first picture look brand new. Nice! Here is a drill holding Crown box.

Here’s a few crown top sets. A 3/8” and 1/4” set in the plastic case with rhft ratchets and an earlier 1/4” set in the metal case.

Here's a Crowntop "cashbox" I picked up recently. Neat green color and sturdy. Numbered lock but no key. Hopefully it cleans up a bit more.

I found several Crown items at a local estate sale this morning. I’m not sure when the Vise Grips were made. Of course the 10mm combo was missing. I think I have a spare to complete the set.

Found these 2 today. Not sure if the blade is quite old enough to be crown top, but it's in the pic anyways, and is brand new in package. Miter saw might not be quite old enough either, but again, including cause it's too close
