Oh man I love running the combine. When we're rolling right along with no issues we should be able to have the wet bin full in 8ih hours so there are no crazy long combine days unless we have break downs like we've been having.

By having on site storage we figure we can grab an easy $0.50-$1.00/bushel advantage by drying it ourselves and marketing it better. I can see it all going to feedlots and getting ground or rolled and packed away but selling to the local elevator in the fall is the worst way to market corn in my mind. Everyone has their own strategy and that may just be what works for them though.

Huh. It's not snowing here !! I think tomorrow it's suppose to do something but not yet today.

We're down below 50 acres of corn of our own and about the same custom work left so the end is in sight !! I still have 150ish bales to bring home. 700 home so far though so we're almost there with the bales as well.

I do agree! However they do get about a few months of free storage and we don't go to the local elevator we go to two feedlot elevators that services NW Iowa. NW Iowa I'm sure you know has a ridiculous amount of cattle especially in our area and these two feedlots service a HUGE AREA so they are always looking for corn. The one elevator needed their corn so bad they sent a truck to the field to haul corn for two days so we were running 4 semis 30 minutes each way. When we are doing wet corn we go to a small feedlot that they contract 100k bushels for every year that's right down the road from a half section so they are short runs at least! I hope you guys have a safe finish to your harvest!

A 9230? That monster would swallow up your combine and still need a snack afterwards. Ive ran a couple of them before, and they are a nice machine, but you need to watch the chopper bearings on them. They are a major weakpoint and are a decent amount of downtime to replace, and thats IF you are lucky enough to catch one before it burns the combine down.

I actually ran 3 of them in a 10acre (yes 10, not a typo) field all at once. With a quadtrac on a cart to keep em all empty. Fun times...

Plus side is that 9230 wouldve finished your harvest quick enough that you might have time left for tillage, the downside is you would need to upgrade your graincarts just to keep it rolling.

You could have at least had them bring it out for a "test drive" to finish up and then decide it was too heavy for the soil. :)
Lol. To give that beast an accurate test drive we'd need a 12r head, a grain cart, a couple semi's and MUCH larger grain setup to be able to to put it to the test. This combine about maxes out the supporting equipment when we're close to home. In a normal dry year when we can unload on the go we won't be able to keep the corn away from it while in our farthest fields.

I do enjoy driving through NW Iowa and looking at all the feedlots. All those tasty steaks and burgers

If they are selling it wetish to a feedlot that makes a HUGE difference VS hauling it wet to an elevator and paying them to dry it and losing a ton of money doing it. Sounds like a sound plan for marketing in their area !!

Why do cows have hooves instead of feet?
Because they lactose.

Swallow it up, spit it out and maybe burp a little before turning around and asking WTF was that ?!?!?

Pretty sure replacing chopper bearings in a 9230 isn't something I'm going to need to worry about in a long time .... more likely never :lol_hitti

We'd need to get a grain cart, pair of semis and a bunch of people to run them all !!

Saturday Dad and I cleaned the dryer out as we're done with it FINALLY !!
49104690102_6f569b4a10_z.jpg

I fired up a new heater I got to use around the farm to thaw things out.
49104689682_7ce4f0e754_z.jpg

We loaded up a few loads of corn straw for the guy that purchased it.
49104689822_872a02b949_z.jpg

We got the dryer loading auger moved around to the other side of the wet bin to be used to load the grinder mixer until next harvest ...
49104503261_a78d6a67c6_z.jpg

First load of the Enogen corn !!
49104689922_06531ee55a_z.jpg

It would seem that a couple of the corn straw bales were a tad moist when baled ....
49104700672_bcb5da3e74_z.jpg

Yikes they're warm !!

Saturday evening Mama Bear and I went to a Minnesota Wild Hockey game. I happened to catch when Gold'N'Plump was advertising
49104700522_a00e1eef9b_z.jpg

After the game we went to Wine and Whiskey tasting fundraiser hosted by the Wild players. We got to meet the team and were able to get them all to sign the little kids jerseys we have for the girls. I was standing next to one of the players without knowing it and BS'ing with him about random stuff and she comes up and asks us how it's going and asks him to sign her jersey. He seemed like a regular dude to me, I had no idea who he was at first lol. She is looking at me because I was suppose to be getting her some wings and she caught me snapping a pic of her :lol_hitti
49104816307_5f3349591b_z.jpg

On Sunday Miss Alyssa and I headed into town and went to Sams Club to load up on food for the coming week. I'll be headed up North again for work and we decided I'd cook for the whole Leedstone crew up there so we didn't need to eat gas station food all week. Little Miss story teller here took FOREVER to eat her pizza. She kept getting distracted by all the things going on :lol_hitti
49104003818_c12757768f_z.jpg

Out on the road soon to be 4hrs from home for the week.
49104513546_99c5c9963a_z.jpg

I started the week off by pulling in a pair of fiber optic lines that'll connect the vet room and calf barn with the main office.
49104512901_a0d02efa16_z.jpg

Then did some phone line terminating stuff.
49104513211_0dbc3c7b55_z.jpg

The main cabinet is 95% done. Just needs to be labeled, mapped and buttoned up.
49104003848_e6b1172a64_z.jpg

I didn't get a great shot of the rest of the Vector area but this is the main area the Vectors will be loaded in. Lots of stuff going on here !!
49104512751_08a9671185_z.jpg

I smashed my last test phone and decided this was the one to have. It works well and got lots of comments from the other guys :lol_hitti
49104513336_864f5bd176_z.jpg

Dinner the first night was BIG THICK T-Bones and a few pounds of potatoes.
49104701007_643fb8d9a1_z.jpg

Followed with bacon ....
49104699927_c6d11dc99b_z.jpg

More potatoes and onions ...
49104514031_eda2882e31_z.jpg

And french toast for breakfast.
49104002953_bae045c152_z.jpg

Mama Bear made me smile with a SnapChat of little Mr. Dude looking at auction posters that came in the mail :lol_hitti

Shredded chicken and au-gratin potatoes for dinner one evening ... we went all out
49104512771_8b90a4ca21_z.jpg

The entire barn was not heated at all but this little vet room was so we set up shop in here for meals and whatnot.
49104002758_f741cbf8a0_z.jpg

Thursday as I left this is what was happening. A stupid snowstorm !!
49104700262_663b5901b6_z.jpg

On the way home I had to go to Wishek, ND to fix something in a parlor, then stop at the robotic GEA dairy south of Lisbon, ND and then go home. It was a rather long day !!
49104692861_9fe01c41fd_z.jpg

I thought I'd take a picture of the birthplace of the bones of the Wok though :lol_hitti

53.5gal of fuel. Never filled that van up three times in one day before !!

The picture of the WOK leaning up on the Wishek sign is classic.

It gave me a very good laugh and a big smile to boot.

Loved the picture of Leo checking out the Auctions for his own green machine.

JBL: I swear you have a double sort of like that CLONE movie with Micheal Keaton he made many years ago. all the farm work, hockey games, taking in a few states with work and maybe driving about 800 miles with snow on the roads and even if you had a CLONE they both are busier than most of us.

glad you took charge of the meals and I bet your crew really appreciated it.

I've got some great buttermilk pancake recipes if you need some. pic of my breakfast and it was a team effort cause my bride made the eggs and I made the pancakes.

have a great weekend!!

AND STAY WARM!!!!!

Ugh, I'd rather clean the barn than clean the dryer. Some of that stuff sets up like concrete, what a pain.

Did I miss getting the 2388 back home?

I drove by and thought it would be a neat picture so I turned around and got one. I thought about firing it up and making lunch on it as it was time but decided against that for some reason.

Life is good!
Life is great

I guess I am still just a big curious child as I am seldom bored as well :bounce:

Leo and I look at those auction posters all the time when we're eating breakfast so it was nothing new to him. Just new to open them and do it on his own.

I couldn't agree more, life is too short to eat bad food. The worst part is always the food when out of town so I decided NO MORE BAD FOOD !!

I'm pretty sure there is only one of me :dunno:

The crew shoveled money my way to help pay for the food. I said I only needed a few bucks and they more than covered it all so I ate for free

The pancakes look delicious

Cleaning the dryer is a PITA but has to happen so it gets done. Dad did most of it this year while I loaded the corn stalk guy up

2388 is home and "repaired" but I haven't posted pics yet. I was up North when it got brought home and my Mother took an incredible amount of pictures and I want to post them all up. She emailed me them with a little description of what was going on and I intend to post it up word for word. I told her she needs to start a thread :lol_hitti

Didn't quit .... yet .... things are good at work but short/medium/long term I want to work for myself and make a living on the farm.

There are always job openings at Leedstone on the Service Team and you can certainly work with me  I do not travel much but when I do go out of town I make sure to at least eat well.

I also enjoy following along in my farming world. Sometimes I re-read posts from days/weeks/months ago to see when we did something. It's actually rather handy !!

Quick (or not) combine update. The combine is home and we're going to remove the rear axle and repair it. I was up North for work on Monday when it was repaired enough to get home. My mother was kind enough to take "a few" pictures and send them over. They are in chronological order as she sent them to me.

Dad cleaned a bunch of the steer barn out on Friday. I helped with the last bits as he finished up.
49113324932_bfa64c45a9_z.jpg

Nice bright lights in the chicken barn make for a crappy picture of Dad spreading the litter treatment in the barn. Chickens come Monday afternoon !!
49113324617_f90a09d064_z.jpg

After we had a few things set in the barn I set to cleaning up/out the old hayshed. Too much junk in there and it was still setup to have calves in it and I don't intend to ever put calves in it again so ....
49113324817_7589575bd6_z.jpg

It took awhile but I got it all apart and cleaned out and Dad helped watch as I put the camper in. Seems like a good idea to put it under a roof over winter.
49112625088_fac72228b4_z.jpg

We got word that a friend of a friend had some pallet racking he wanted to sell and we jumped on it quick fast and in a hurry !!!
49113324532_3279f13493_z.jpg

Load it all up !!!
49113132726_101aa234fe_z.jpg

Annnnnd unload it and put in in storage until we need it again. 11 - 21' uprights and 134 - 8' horizontal bars

Nice to see it back together! Mom's got skills and so does the welder! Pretty healthy angle iron, what else are you going to do to the axle? Bent metal cosmetic only, or internal damage? Still a nice unit that should give you several years of service.

The left half was totally busted off the right half. I think it's 1/2"x4" angle so yeah, pretty hefty

We intend to repair the old one by plating it front and back and reinforcing the smell out of it !!!

Great pics. of the rescue repair. You have a great mom to take these pictures for you/us.

Now you have another project on your to do list for the winter.

Please tell your mom thanks for me. Your thread is cool because of the content and the family living, working and farming together. It is very enjoyable for me to follow along. I'm always showing my wife what you and the family are up to.

Thanks again for sharing.

Mom can be quite the picture taken. Dad, not so much :lol_hitti

Another project after the other 248 projects lol. I've got stuff lined up to do in a shop I don't even have built yet :wtf:

When I read that others enjoy seeing what we do out here it really does make me smile and feel a sense of accomplishment. If anyone ever wants to stop in the beer is cold and the chickens are happy :lol_hitti

The hood is back on the 884 (after a year lol) and it's back in the shed-in-a-shed where it'll be safe and warm all winter until it's needed.
49124981908_2ac08d76d5_z.jpg

Well ****. It would seem I got a tad close to the wall with the 3pt hitch
49124981883_570dfa2f77_z.jpg

Little Mr. Man and I road tripped South a bit to snag the chicken basket back as we'll need it Monday when chickens come. Leo was having a grand ol' time until he started getting sleepy.
49124981743_a3e2c5e8e2_z.jpg

Ain't nothing like a nice sunset to put a smile on a guys face :)
49124981288_99775d960d_z.jpg

We stopped over at a local dairy farmer's place to get the robot computer talking to their computer in the house to save some trips when doing data entry. Leo wanted to see the cows so we wandered around the barn for a bit. We were both entertained.
49125472741_04a044e9dc_z.jpg

We have the opportunity to buy 4 flocks worth of chicken manure from a neighbor and decided to haul it to the field and and pile it until spring. We are going to use a spreader from a Uncle of mine.
49125657787_e9d805a608_z.jpg

This spreader has removable beaters so it can be used to haul and pile without spreading. Dad is checking out how to take them off. It's been a while.
49124981398_72a6379510_z.jpg

Once chain to disconnect and two bolts to remove and off they come.

JBL: in case I'm busy TRYING TO GET ORGANIZED I wanted to wish you and your family a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING. since you have plenty of beef and maybe chicken in the freezers do you have that for dinner on T Day or do you maybe get a turkey from a local farmer or a ham?

I know why you seem even more busier than you are. your mom is taking a lot of pictures and I bet your dad doesn't sit down. I want to thank them for also contributing to your thread and also wish them a HAPPY THANKSGIVING too.

the pictures you have where your kids are around the cows in the barn remind me of going to my uncle's farm 50-60 years ago and OMG the memories are just as fresh as that smell.

cheers (tipping my cold mug of ice tea towards MINN E SODA now)

Actually, most of us in the south refer to it as "MINN E SNOWTA"!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all, I really enjoy this thread, my hat is off to all farmers that keep food available to the rest of us. Most people have no idea of the work required and the investment it takes to keep up with a farm. This is one of my favorites on Garage Journal, I check for updates daily.

The welder guys gonna hurt himself sitting with his legs splayed out like that :) Maybe he's double jointed.....
From the stories I've heard about him I think he is quite flexible being able to get in the crazy spots he needs to get into to fix things out in the field. I do not think I'd be very happy sitting like that for just too long though :wtf:

I don't what we're having for Thanksgiving meals this year. Mama Bear gets a turkey from work each year so I'd imagine we'll have that for one meal. We've had everything from "fancy" Mac-n-Cheese to lasagna to spaghetti and pizza for Thanksgiving. Usually whomever hosts the family get-together decides the menu.

Mom likes taking pictures and I like showing them so it all works out. Dad enjoys his sitting down time but I know he likes being busy as well. Him and some old guy buddies of his are going to Phoenix next week to go golfing for a week. Good grief. What a bunch of bums :lol_hitti

Just remember, that smell is the smell of money :bounce:

Right now it is MINN E SNOWTA'ing here

Last year was a doosey for the amount of snow. We joked around here that if everyone pointed a fan North it'd all thaw out because the warm air would eventually get here :lol_hitti

Farming is a lot of work no doubt and there certainly isn't always enough money to go around (hence the off-the-farm job) but we make it work. One day I want to be a real farmer and not have an actual job. I guess it's a goal of mine lol.

Thanks for following along !!

I hear that from people not far from here as well. I tell them to truck it over here and I'll gladly "get rid" of it here. Poultry manure is a VERY potent source of nutrients and I can't understand how there can be a surplus of it anywhere. Some farmer somewhere is smiling every time a free truck of litter rolls into his fields. I'd love to be that farmer but it's still worth every penny we pay for it !!!

Wanted to wish you and all your family a Happy Thanksgiving! Also one question for you, what is the ********* round thingy on the upper right side of the combine? Just to give all the farmers a possible chuckle, I will make a very uneducated guess and say an air filter. Hopefully I didn't embarrass myself....:bounce:

Thanks for the well wishes and I hope your turkey day was filled with too much eating and the swapping of stories with family :)

The ********* round thingy on the upper right side of the combine is a satellite dish used to talk to aliens :shocking:

J/K. It's a pre-cleaner for the radiator and hydraulic oil cooler. There are a pair of vanes inside it that cause it to spin as the engine fan ***** air through the radiator and hydraulic oil cooler. There is a brush on the inside of the round spinny thing that rubs on the mesh screen and breaks the suction of anything stuck to the outside of the mesh so it falls off and stays clean. It works very well. On earlier models they were located in the rear of the combine and were about half the size of the one on our combine. It's in a much better spot to stay clean where it is now.

Thank you for asking !!!

The 4wheeler has 8ish inches of ground clearance ..... and it's dragging in the snow. It had to happen eventually but an 8" dumping the first snow is a lot. Annnnnnnd there's potentially another 12" on the way before Saturday night :shocking:

So .... I'm not exactly sure how this happened but a tractor ran into the ditch and smacked my mailbox. Mama Bear has wanted a new mailbox because this one leaked and looked like **** since we moved in and it seems she has gotten her way today.

The bracket that bolts to the post was quite FUBAR'd .....

So I took the liberty of finessing it back into shape.

Classic John Deere Green and Yellow should look like a million bucks once it's back up tomorrow :bounce:

Lol. That'd be a hell of a spare tire :lol_hitti

Seems the ribbing Jay was looking for above has started

Awesome 884 corn binder, grew up driving this and a 454
After we fixed a few issues it had it's been a great little rig. Lots of power for it's frame size so it can fill a number of roles out here !!

Lol. I highly doubt it. Although unconfirmed I'm pretty sure the driver was our 86yr old neighbor. That must have been one hell of a ride down into that ditch. Good thing is that if it was him he rarely brakes 10mph anymore as he says "I've been waiting for you to catch up my whole life it's time you started waiting for me !!"

JBL: sounds like your dad really knew when to fly to the desert and get a little sunshine. OMG 2 feet of snow sounds like a lot, but since it sounds like you are somewhat used to it i'll just wish you the best and hope you and your family STAYS WARM & DRY.

i'm a big fan of the John Deere green/yellow colors so having your new (or slightly used) mailbox with some fresh color sound like your neighbor might be able to see it better so he can avoid the ditch next time.

hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

cheers

Harvest with Wife's 84 y/o brother in law was a real hoot … health issues, supposed to take it easy, no lifting over 5lbs, no driving, no physical or mental stress. At one point we were finishing up a field and discussing how we were going to get loads into elevator, move combine, header, grain cart, semi and two wagons to next field and we hear pickup increase from an idle to a grunt and turn to see him taking off with load to elevator. I yelled looks like I'm going to the elevator and made a mad dash for the copilot seat. comments from that trip:
We'll be to town and back while they are deciding what they are doing!
This wagon actually tows better at 60 mph than it does at 40, as we're doing 65mph
time it right you can run through all 8 stoplights without stopping while rolling on red
If they are still standing around picking their nose, we'll take semi next
LOL so much for light duty LOL

At one point, a belt kept rolling over on the combine, his son called dealership to see if they had it , set it aside and decided to send Dad to get the belt, and try to keep running the bad belt until Dad returned. I return from elevator and help with combine, when the belt would roll, the header would plug up. About the 8th plug up, I asked "how long has Dad been gone and when should he be back?" Should have been back an hour ago?? Son calls dealership, yeah, has picked up the belt, have you checked the Amish buffet? He left here with two other guys and that's where they were headed!! LOL Must have been Gold n Plump cause he was still there when son called LOL

Dad and his old guy buddies fly out Tuesday for a week to go golfing and eat pumpkin pie. At least the only stories I've heard have been about golfing and pie. Lol.

I've had that mailbox painted and ready for something like 3.5 years already so it was time it got put up. Good thing I waited though or the nice one would have been wrecked. I told that to Mama Bear and she just rolled her eyes. "See hunny, it was a good thing I procrastinated or we'd be spending money on another mailbox !!"

You can take the farmer out of the farm but you can't take the farm out of the farmer.
