You could have at least had them bring it out for a "test drive" to finish up and then decide it was too heavy for the soil.
Oh man I love running the combine. When we're rolling right along with no issues we should be able to have the wet bin full in 8ih hours so there are no crazy long combine days unless we have break downs like we've been having.
By having on site storage we figure we can grab an easy $0.50-$1.00/bushel advantage by drying it ourselves and marketing it better. I can see it all going to feedlots and getting ground or rolled and packed away but selling to the local elevator in the fall is the worst way to market corn in my mind. Everyone has their own strategy and that may just be what works for them though.
Huh. It's not snowing here !! I think tomorrow it's suppose to do something but not yet today.
We're down below 50 acres of corn of our own and about the same custom work left so the end is in sight !! I still have 150ish bales to bring home. 700 home so far though so we're almost there with the bales as well.

Lol. To give that beast an accurate test drive we'd need a 12r head, a grain cart, a couple semi's and MUCH larger grain setup to be able to to put it to the test. This combine about maxes out the supporting equipment when we're close to home. In a normal dry year when we can unload on the go we won't be able to keep the corn away from it while in our farthest fields. You could have at least had them bring it out for a "test drive" to finish up and then decide it was too heavy for the soil.![]()
I do enjoy driving through NW Iowa and looking at all the feedlots. All those tasty steaks and burgersI do agree! However they do get about a few months of free storage and we don't go to the local elevator we go to two feedlot elevators that services NW Iowa. NW Iowa I'm sure you know has a ridiculous amount of cattle especially in our area and these two feedlots service a HUGE AREA so they are always looking for corn. The one elevator needed their corn so bad they sent a truck to the field to haul corn for two days so we were running 4 semis 30 minutes each way. When we are doing wet corn we go to a small feedlot that they contract 100k bushels for every year that's right down the road from a half section so they are short runs at least! I hope you guys have a safe finish to your harvest!

It's all goodJBL: maybe it was my joke that didn't come off funny and smelled a bit.
anyway i'll work on my farming jokes and wish you the best as you get finished up for the season.
stay safe and STAY WARM!!
AND GOOD LUCK!!

Swallow it up, spit it out and maybe burp a little before turning around and asking WTF was that ?!?!?A 9230? That monster would swallow up your combine and still need a snack afterwards. I've ran a couple of them before, and they are a nice machine, but you need to watch the chopper bearings on them. They are a major weak point and are a decent amount of downtime to replace, and that's IF you are lucky enough to catch one before it burns the combine down.
I actually ran 3 of them in a 10 acre (yes 10, not a typo) field all at once. With a quadtrac on a cart to keep em all empty. Fun times...
Plus side is that 9230 would've finished your harvest quick enough that you might have time left for tillage, the downside is you would need to upgrade your grain carts just to keep it rolling.

I drove by and thought it would be a neat picture so I turned around and got one. I thought about firing it up and making lunch on it as it was time but decided against that for some reason. The picture of the WOK leaning up on the Wishek sign is classic.
It gave me a very good laugh and a big smile to boot.
Loved the picture of Leo checking out the Auctions for his own green machine.

Life is greatLife is good!
I guess I am still just a big curious child as I am seldom bored as wellThat is a really nice picture, making me smile. A curious child seldom is bored...
He is not bored
Nice to see you are not going hungry when working away from home. And life is to short to eat bad food.

I'm pretty sure there is only one of meJBL: I swear you have a double sort of like that CLONE movie with Micheal Keaton he made many years ago. all the farm work, hockey games, taking in a few states with work and maybe driving about 800 miles with snow on the roads and even if you had a CLONE they both are busier than most of us.
glad you took charge of the meals and I bet your crew really appreciated it.
I've got some great buttermilk pancake recipes if you need some. pic of my breakfast and it was a team effort cause my bride made the eggs and I made the pancakes.
have a great weekend!!
AND STAY WARM!!!!!

Cleaning the dryer is a PITA but has to happen so it gets done. Dad did most of it this year while I loaded the corn stalk guy upUgh, I'd rather clean the barn than clean the dryer. Some of that stuff sets up like concrete, what a pain.
Did I miss getting the 2388 back home?

Didn't quit .... yet .... things are good at work but short/medium/long term I want to work for myself and make a living on the farm.I was wondering if you were on hiatus from the automation job or had quit, so its interesting to see the new pics.
There are always job openings at Leedstone on the Service Team and you can certainly work with meJBL, any job openings where you work, I want to work on your crew
I enjoy following along and seeing what's going on in your farming world. Very interesting to me. Thanks for taking the time to post. That wishek disc seems to be working out!

The left half was totally busted off the right half. I think it's 1/2"x4" angle so yeah, pretty heftyNice to see it back together! Mom's got skills and so does the welder! Pretty healthy angle iron, what else are you going to do to the axle? Bent metal cosmetic only, or internal damage? Still a nice unit that should give you several years of service.
Mom can be quite the picture taken. Dad, not so muchGreat pics. of the rescue repair. You have a great mom to take these pictures for you/us.
Now you have another project on your to do list for the winter.
Please tell your mom thanks for me. Your thread is cool because of the content and the family living, working and farming together. It is very enjoyable for me to follow along. I'm always showing my wife what you and the family are up to.
Thanks again for sharing.
Vince

From the stories I've heard about him I think he is quite flexible being able to get in the crazy spots he needs to get into to fix things out in the field. I do not think I'd be very happy sitting like that for just too long thoughThe welder guys gonna hurt himself sitting with his legs splayed out like thatMaybe he's double jointed.....

I don't what we're having for Thanksgiving meals this year. Mama Bear gets a turkey from work each year so I'd imagine we'll have that for one meal. We've had everything from "fancy" Mac-n-Cheese to lasagna to spaghetti and pizza for Thanksgiving. Usually whomever hosts the family get-together decides the menu.JBL: In case I'm busy TRYING TO GET ORGANIZED I wanted to wish you and your family a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Since you have plenty of beef and maybe chicken in the freezers do you have that for dinner on T Day or do you maybe get a turkey from a local farmer or a ham ?
I know why you seem even more busier than you are. Your Mom is taking a lot of pictures and I bet your Dad doesn't sit down. I want to thank them for also contributing to your thread and also wish them a HAPPY THANKSGIVING too.
The pictures you have where your kids are around the cows in the barn remind me of going to my uncle's farm 50-60 years ago and OMG the memories are just as fresh as that smell.
Cheers (tipping my cold mug of ice tea towards MINN E SODA now)

Right now it is MINN E SNOWTA'ing here"cheers (tipping my cold mug of ice tea towards MINN E SODA now)"
Actually, most of us in the south refer to it as "MINN E SNOWTA"!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all, I really enjoy this thread, my hat is off to all farmers that keep food available to the rest of us. Most people have no idea of the work required and the investment it takes to keep up with a farm. This is one of my favorites on Garage Journal, I check for updates daily.

I hear that from people not far from here as well. I tell them to truck it over here and I'll gladly "get rid" of it here. Poultry manure is a VERY potent source of nutrients and I can't understand how there can be a surplus of it anywhere. Some farmer somewhere is smiling every time a free truck of litter rolls into his fields. I'd love to be that farmer but it's still worth every penny we pay for it !!!" BUY 4 flocks worth of chicken manure from a neighbor "
LOL I had to read that twice to make sure I got it right LOL Here, you would have to pay someone to take it.

Thanks for the well wishes and I hope your turkey day was filled with too much eating and the swapping of stories with familyWanted to wish you and all your family a Happy Thanksgiving! Also one question for you, what is the ********* round thingy on the upper right side of the combine? Just to give all the farmers a possible chuckle, I will make a very uneducated guess and say an air filter. Hopefully I didn't embarrass myself....
Jay

Lol. That'd be a hell of a spare tireThe ********* round thingy on the upper right side of the combine is a satellite dish used to talk to aliens
Thought sure it was the cover for the donut spare tire![]()

After we fixed a few issues it had it's been a great little rig. Lots of power for it's frame size so it can fill a number of roles out here !!Awesome 884 corn binder, grew up driving this and a 454
Lol. I highly doubt it. Although unconfirmed I'm pretty sure the driver was our 86yr old neighbor. That must have been one hell of a ride down into that ditch. Good thing is that if it was him he rarely brakes 10mph anymore as he says "I've been waiting for you to catch up my whole life it's time you started waiting for me !!"any truth to the rumor she paid the tractor driver for the mix up with the mailbox?
Dad and his old guy buddies fly out Tuesday for a week to go golfing and eat pumpkin pie. At least the only stories I've heard have been about golfing and pie. Lol.JBL: sounds like your dad really knew when to fly to the desert and get a little sunshine. OMG 2 feet of snow sounds like a lot, but since it sounds like you are somewhat used to it i'll just wish you the best and hope you and your family STAYS WARM & DRY.
i'm a big fan of the John Deere green/yellow colors so having your new (or slightly used) mailbox with some fresh color sound like your neighbor might be able to see it better so he can avoid the ditch next time.
hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
cheers
You can take the farmer out of the farm but you can't take the farm out of the farmer.Harvest with Wife's 84 y/o brother in law was a real hoot … health issues, supposed to take it easy, no lifting over 5lbs, no driving, no physical or mental stress. At one point we were finishing up a field and discussing how we were going to get loads into elevator, move combine, header, grain cart, semi and two wagons to next field and we hear pickup increase from an idle to a grunt and turn to see him taking off with load to elevator. I yelled looks like I'm going to the elevator and made a mad dash for the copilot seat. comments from that trip:
We'll be to town and back while they are deciding what they are doing!
This wagon actually tows better at 60 mph than it does at 40, as we're doing 65mph
time it right you can run through all 8 stoplights without stopping while rolling on red
If they are still standing around picking their nose, we'll take semi next
LOL so much for light duty LOL
Lol. "Those kids will be fine until I get back. George grab me another piece of pie and make it a good one!!!"At one point, a belt kept rolling over on the combine, his son called dealership to see if they had it , set it aside and decided to send Dad to get the belt, and try to keep running the bad belt until Dad returned. I return from elevator and help with combine, when the belt would roll, the header would plug up. About the 8th plug up, I asked "how long has Dad been gone and when should he be back?" Should have been back an hour ago?? Son calls dealership, yeah, has picked up the belt, have you checked the Amish buffet? He left here with two other guys and that's where they were headed!! LOL Must have been Gold'n'Plump cause he was still there when son called LOL
