2019 Garage Sale Thread

Hey, Garage Sale fans, followers and finders! This is my official tickler to be on the look out for our Picker Of The Year nominations. I intend to put together a short list of folks who've had a really good, consistent year of great finds and then let all of you comment, ruminate, and ultimately vote for the thread's PotY for 2019. Expect that vote to close in the first half of December (or so). The winner gets a trophy that I still have to make....

After that selection, we'll have another to select the person who will have the honor of launching the 2020 Garage Sale thread around midnight on New Year's Eve. I'll try to have that close out before Christmas Eve to give the lucky recipient time to plan their opening.

Of course, our season isn't over--any secondhand source counts, not just physical garage sales--so keep those picks rolling in!

I was told that you are suppose to use stainless tools on stainless fasteners. The reason be a standard carbon steel tool could leave carbon residue which will rust. Don't have any evidence to back this up.

Marks on fasteners, maybe, but I would think in highly corrosive or rust prone environments? (boat/ship use, someone that works with caustics handling equipment and lines...)

Nice haul!

We use SS tools at work when we are working with contamination critical systems. No plastic handles, no coatings, no corrosion etc.

It’s too rainy for garage sales today, but I did score a presweld toolbox full of tools off of craigslist. Most of the tools were junk, but I was mainly after the box anyway. There were some keepers in there, snap on flex head, plomb puller jaws, some good wrenches and sockets, etc... he coolest pieces are the Stanley sweetheart ruler and his little Lutz bras hammer.

Haven't been able to keep up with this thread, reading or posting. But I was given a tool box this week with a bunch of vintage Craftsman stuff, most appears to have seen little use. The Williams tool box is like brand new, but is missing the tray unfortunately.

These are from an early morning garage sale on Sunday. Guy was retiring, sold the house and downsizing. Nice set of Channellocks, some Klein side-cutter's, an Irwin that's the size smaller than the one I picked up Saturday morning. Craftsman and some wire strippers that I thought were Greenlee but closer look they say Commercial. And a really cool Husky flex head ratchet with 1/4dr on one side and bit holder on the other. I think the Husky's going into my toolbox!

I see 2 very nice things in that box! The spinner ratchet is fairly rare and the long handle 1/2 is also desirable! You ****!

Win some you lose some, guess I'll post the losses as well as the good buys. This weekend headed to an estate sale about 40 minutes away because there were a lot of tools pictured including a Snap-on KR-537 top box I've been looking out for.

Arrived about an hour after the sale started, miserable rainy day, the 537 was already gone, they told me it sold for $500 so good for the estate!

There were a ton of tools, so I was picking through to find things I need or just interesting. Usually try to make a pile and get one price instead of asking individual prices, in this case the estate people were pricing pretty high on everything I heard quoted. So put my pile in front of the cashier for a price and she said $45, about $15 more than I wanted to pay, so offered $40, no go. While I was considering putting it all back I spotted a Craftsman plastic toolbox that would carry most of the items since it was a long muddy slog back to the car, so agreed to pay the $45 if they threw in the plastic toolbox.

Actually like the box once I got it home, three levels of nested trays and quite deep. Think I'll fill it to use as a household box at my Mom's house so I don't have to carry tools over for "handyman" jobs.

Second half of 2019-11-30 sale.

So going through the attached two-car garage at the same sale, picked out these items and put them in a plastic bucket to show the dude that was pricing things. He was stuck on $35 as bottom dollar so I paid it. I had been considering buying a small tool cart but don't really have the floor space to store one, so the little "over the engine" rolling thing looked like a good option.

Identified the two bigger pullers as pitman arm pullers, I'm not likely to pull any pitman arms so these probably going to the 'bay.

Couldn't figure out what the third item I figured was a puller, has the numbers CJ-87-1 forged in one of the parts but I don't know if that is for the whole puller or that part.

I like the like-new condition Proto speed drive even though I can't imagine where it would be an advantage to use, maybe if you were driving dozens of small bolts attaching sheet metal to something.

Damon, I feel your pain. After I left the sale posted above where they were happy to price by the pile to move the goods, I pulled into another estate sale where each and every tool had a sticker price. Not always a bad thing, but this was the second day and the prices were still astronomical--some things more than retail. I started telling all the guys looking at the tools about the place I had just came from. Needless to say, I left empty handed. Sometimes you just have to walk away.

The part number CJ-87-1 is the Snap On number for just the jaw and a set of 2 jaws is selling for about $35.00 on fleebay. The full puller with the top cross bar and centre screw seems to be around $129.00

Thanks for the info! I've used a regular two and three jaw puller but how does this one work? What is the application? I don't know what to call it so can't lookup YouTube videos like usual.

Look at the smaller of the two OTC pullers you bought with this item. It is made with the same design as the Snap-On puller these jaws fit.
