2 doors and for 2 cars, but with lifts, 2x the fun.

Do you find it tough to work on the cars with the lifts in the way? I am looking to build a house thats got a 2 car garage and a single car garage also... i want the 2 car garage to be my work shop and the one car for my wife... but with two lifts i feel like they'll get in the way to work on the cars.

Hello Gents,

My first post here. Mine is a working garage because I have a pretty steady side hustle repairing cars and light trucks (everything from engines and transmissions to brakes and oil changes) for my neighbors, friends, friends of friends, etc. Over the holiday I decided to spruce up the main wall by putting up tonge-in-groove boards with three coats of polyshades. My ex says it looks like the 80s (part of the reason she's my ex), but I thought it added a warm, cozy vibe to the space I spend so much time in without ruining the industrial aesthetic I have going on. Workbench top is made from two solid core wood doors joined by steel plates at the vice and covered by galvanized metal from a friend of mine who is a heating contractor. My old tool box (bought 20-some years ago when I was a young mechanic) just happens to fit perfectly between the two drain pipes that were there, and I tapped into one of them to plumb the utility sink that I don't know how I survived without. The air compressor is hidden under my stairs inside the house and plumbed through the wall with copper tubing to a hose reel in the center of the ceiling. This allows my engine hoist, welder, bearing press, and other tools to fit along the sides with plenty of room for two cars at a time.

Nice Garage

It's amazing the impact just painting the walls the contrasting colors makes. Very nice work - very "show garage" - I dig it!

Thanks for the compliments guys. I have recently done some design changes. New Swisstrax floor replaces prior RaceDeck floor and the paint scheme has been toned down.

It's been eight or nine years getting my garage to this point and I have thoroughly enjoyed the process. By far, the best part has been sharing the evolution with other garage enthusiasts. I have some finer details to address but this place is 99% complete! Thanks again for the feedback and I look forward to seeing what everyone else is up to with their double garages!

Perfect time for this thread to come back to the top, as my wife and I are scheduled to settle on a house with a 2-car garage in July. I've been living in a garageless condo for the past 6+ years, so to say that I'm excited is a bit of an understatement :p

Subscribed and hopefully contributing in the near future. Hopefully traffic in this threads pics up a bit :)

I still need to make a video of my build and finished garage. Maybe I'll get around to that this winter.

This is my 21x18 with attached 9x6 laundry area. Still need a tool box and more storage. It will only house one car though.

Here's my 2-car attached. Roughly 19' deep x 21' wide. 16' x 7' door.

When we moved in last August:
attachment.php

And now. What I've done since then:
  • Ground the floor, laid down Hellfire
  • Built a "Steve-O" style bench. 8' x 22" with a USG 44" box
  • Retaped the ceiling drywall seams, painted ceiling, walls, and block foundation walls. Added Black vinyl base cove
  • Added a pair of 4' HD LED strip lights on the ceiling
  • Added a pair of Rubbermaid Fast-track rails on each side wall
  • Added Rubbermaid Fasttrack "wall" above my workbench
  • Added the 3x Husky wall cabinets and matching floor cabinet
]*]Added a whiteboard for maintenance logs and mounted a fire extinguisher
  • Added some memorabilia on the walls :)

Overall I'm pretty happy with it, especially since it's my first garage of my own (finally ditched the condo life :)). Another foot or two of depth would be nice, but it's cozy and gets the job done. With my Z on the ground and just clear of the door, I've got about 3' of space between my bench and the rear bumper. A couple key changes, which made it feel a LOT bigger was removing the cabinets from the side wall and swapping parking spots (Z on the right, backed in, Jeep on the left, pulled in). That parking arrangement puts both drivers' doors on the perimeter, allowing them to open up towards the walls where there's more room.

About the only remaining plans for it is some additional lighting and eventually upgrading to an 8' tall door so I can pull my truck in without dragging the antenna on the door. It's a load-bearing wall so that'll be a project FAR in the future

Agreed. We don't all have money or land to build our dream shops. The rest of us have to work with what we have.

Attached a few pictures of my own. Nothing special, not even a full shot of the garage because there is nothing to see. And no, it's not my house and that's not my Mustang either... This is how the rest of us live.

Here was my old 2 car garage:
http://images.plebeians.net/_data/i/upload/2020/05/10/20200510222959-e14e5073-**.jpg

Mill and lathe behind the MX5/Miata, workbench on the left hand side. Was in the middle of building the new welding bench in this shot, so messy as all get out.

Ive now 'downgraded' to a long single and a 4x4ft (3x3.3m) workshop...
