I made good progress tonight. It was fun--cutting curves in metal is soooooo much easier with the plasma torch. I even got the electrical parts nearly done without blowing any breakers. Next I need to finish the packaging ...

Ooh, the anticipation is getting to me!

You know, if the final trophy is big and heavy and expensive to ship, it really should go to someone local to cut down on your costs. ;)

Say what?!! Plasma torch? Electrical parts? Oh man. I was happy to hear you were going to carry on the new tradition I started last year, but why do I get the feeling it's going to blow my little puller-socket-magical fingers trophy away?!

I wonder if the trophy also doubles to re-animate Frankenstein's monster.

As always a lot of great scores! I'm really attracted by the boy scout hatchet from Outlaw simply cause I'm an Eagle scout and stuff like that draws my attention.

Estate sale and garage sales has slowed down for me and even if there was some to go to, I am general busy with family activities and working on the camaro.

But I have been picking stuff from the trash days. Last night I picked up a set of bed rails for random project materials. Been wanting to make more dolly frames to put stuff on in the garage and be able to roll them around.

I also picked up 3 lawnmowers from the side of the road last week. Hopefully I'll be able to get them fixed up and sold on craigslist for folding money! Two are AWD mowers and one is two wheel self propelled. two of them I got started with some starting fluid but needs carb work. Two Husqvarna and a Toro AWD.

Wow, that time already Bomber! Another year. The vote is always fun.

Levaughn- nice find on the Wright set. It would be great to see in the vintage Wright thread. I’m curious what the label says.

Downwind- I ran into a bunch of Canadian tools today, including some Gray.

If you mean what is on the top closed lid there is nothing. If it was a sticker on there with the Wright name or logo it fell off.

The sockets at upper left are all Snap-on, SAE and metric, a small drafting set, random sockets (MAC, Proto, SK), thread cutter, tire pressure gauge, Snap-on flex extension, Snap-on ratcheting driver and spinner, three outside calipers (one union, two unmarked) and wing dividers. And some sort of pin with a braided cord.

I think the "pin with a braided cord" might be a type of fid, used for rope and knot work.

Went through about a 5 gallon bucket’s worth of sockets at my local pawn shop to find these ones that I’m missing from other sets. There was a husky wheel ratchet in there too. All told, $5 out the door. All but four are lifetime warrantied, so I’ll be able to swap out the rusty one. The others are unlikely to see much use, and are no name Taiwan, so I’m not concerned

A little update on the 8” Stillson-pattern wood-handled pipe wrench I picked up Sunday inst.
It is not marked Bonney, as I’d hoped, but Moore Bros **, which was a manufacturer of mainly files and rasps in Jamestown NY, right across the river from Crescent. Oddly, despite having an appreciable number of old files and rasps, I don’t think I have one of theirs. But I do have one of my grandfather’s (he was the last to own it, but probably not the first) Moore Bros Empire State saws!

Sweet looking saw from your grandfather, LS. I'm not familiar with Moore Bros, but that is a panel saw with a nice etch and great looking handle without noticeable chips on the horns. It looks like it may have only one more sharpening left in it so be careful of that tip!

A couple weeks ago I picked up a nice vintage lamp. Here it is with a replacement shade and a new fitter installed.

And one thing I hadn't noticed when I bought it was the painting on the base

You **** for free mowers. I picked one up a few years ago from next to the dumpster behind SWMBO's old office. I removed and cleaned the bowl and float parts, and it fired right up. Of course, I still have it. I need to convert it to folding money, too.

Thanks! I generally pick up any small engine appliance from trash days that I can find. Only thing I pass on is string trimmers, unless it's an echo or stihl I just don't find them worth fixing for resale purpose. This year was pretty thin on the mower front during the spring. Only found 2 mowers that was worth fixing and selling. So to find these in the winter time was a surprise for me!

Fun estate sale in Racine on Sunday. Two story barn, plus house. Advertised as 50% off but the guy just made bundle pricing.

Peerless Level and Tool vintage level (first time I've heard of the name), old oil cans, Swedish hatchet head, etc. $5 for all

Chairs were $10 for the three. Another $3 for an Oberg file (something tells me the farmer was a Swede) some books and a push drill made in Germany.

In my excitement over finding three vises for a total of $25, at one estate sale last week, I failed to properly examine them all. The black vise, with the obvious repair to the spindle didn't bother me too much because I thought it was unusual with its dynamic jaw to the rear and a full back-to-front centerline mounting slot. I didn't notice until I got home that the dynamic jaw's right side guide tab was broken off and missing. So that's a bummer. I'd still like to know who made it and for what application but since there are no maker's marks or stamps on it whatsoever, I'm at a loss as to where to start researching--so I'll start here! Does anyone recognize this vise? It has 2.5 inch jaws.

05 Dec 19-2.jpg05 Dec 19-3.jpg05 Dec 19-4.jpg

The little jeweler's vise looks a lot like several I've seen here on GJ but, again, this one has no markings at all. It has a 1.75 inch jaw.

05 Dec 19-7.jpg05 Dec 19-8.jpg05 Dec 19-9.jpg

The third is a 3.5 inch Fuller. I'd never heard of Fuller, but apparently the company started in N.Y. in the '30s, opened a Canadian branch in '44 and moved their HQ to Montreal in the '90s. Their website doesn't mention vises, nor does their history, so I'm wondering if it is, in fact, the same company. The swivel has Japan and BF cast into the bottom--which I believe indicates early post-war production. I see 3baygarage sold the same exact one earlier this year: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=415504 so I'll link to his since I've reached my 7 photo limit.

The nesting screwdriver/hammer is okay, as is the Chinese wood clamp ($1 each), but the real steal of the day was a box of 47 hack saw blades for $2. All told, $29.

Hello GJ

Was able to swing by the flea market today and got a few nice items.

Picked up a near complete John Deere USA metric wrench set, another JD wrench, Case IH branded blue point 3/8 rachet, a couple of silver eagle wrenches, new looking Thorsen 1 1/4 ( didn't make the photo) socket, bonney hydraulic 13/16 wrench, proto 9/16 & a plomb 8163. Cost an even $100 today.

Really enjoy scrolling GJ!

Ran across a garage sale this weekend and got a whole box-o-junk for $1. This was after he said he wanted $0.50 for the Craftsman universal alone.

08 Dec 19-1.jpg

After separating the obvious ****, I still had 2/3s left over.

08 Dec 19-2.jpg

Culling out the Taiwanese and Indian wrenches and the knob-less, bent Craftsman spinner, etc. a few interesting items emerged.

08 Dec 19-3.jpg

Besides the 3/8 CM Universal, there was a 1/4 Snap On spinner, a couple of rough-cast Companion combos and a cute little 1/4 ratchet by Urrea (Mexico), there were two International Harvester combos, a Proto Challenger and a Giller combo. I know nothing about IH or Giller wrenches so I'll be researching those. There was a lot of plumbing detritus in the box including a KITEC pipe gauge--I hope he didn't install that in his house!

08 Dec 19-4.jpg

Of interest for me were small slip joint pliers and metric open end wrench with a HM circle logo. A cursory check on Alloy Artifacts came up dry. And finally, a couple of old bottle/can openers of long-gone beer. Jax was last brewed in 1974 and Lone Star left San Antonio in 1996.

Aaaaaand its done! The 2019 How much do you ****?-o-meter!

This year's Picker of the Year will receive this contraption that I jammed together from a variety of sources to reflect the many places we pickers find our treasures.

The front face of the meter is part of a frame from a scrapped Craftsman radial arm saw. The gauge is an Ebay-sourced vacuum gauge, a big, quality piece at a good price. The push button was from a batch of heavy duty switches found at an estate sale. The rest of the box was cut from a leftover piece of heating duct that came with my house. Inside is a 12V power supply, outlet and wiring left over from other garage projects. The only things bought new specifically for this trophy was the 12V vacuum pump .

The meter face has been...repurposed...to show how much the person who wins the vote *****. Which should be a lot, as you will see in the list of candidates who had really good picks over the past year.

I'm outta time tonight to set up the poll and list of candidates. I'll post them tomorrow after work.

Cheers, fellas!

The Bonney made John Deere wrenches had the v cut open end. The logo on those posted looks newer Taiwan made. Need to flip them over and take a look for coa stamping.

All have USA on them. I think these were made right before production was sent offshore. The lone jd 9/16 I picked was the older v cut style.

Two things might help identify the maker: compare the lengths to known manufacturers, and check the exact geometry of the box-end broaching. They look like LocRite, but maybe Flank Drive, or something else similar? The set-laid-out photos don’t quite show that detail.
The full polish era is outside my current Bonney focus, but I think V-gullet open ends started around 1967, when Kelsey-Hayes/Utica purchased Bonney, and may reflect the influence of either the general midwest style or specifically that of Herbrand. It could be, as you say, that the U-gullet resumed later (maybe the Triangle era), just prior to moving production offshore.

Try posting them on the Bonney thread. Maybe someone has a similar set.

The Giller combo was likely made in Dallas. They were probably owned by Thorsen by the time that wrench was made.
Your HM tools probably came in the toolset of a Honda motorcycle.

I forgot about the v cut. I only have one in 1/2” found in the cab of a tractor we’d bought. Nice wrench and wish I had a set in inch and metric.

Thanks for the kudos on the PotY trophy. It was fun putting it together and hey, its gets some of my junk...er, treasures, yeah, treasures out of my garage.

So who's going to get it? That's up to all of you. I spent several hours poring over entries on this thread. I first tried going through the posts of the most prolific posters...but after two days walking through just PrivateLugnutz's posts, I thought I was in the home stretch until I realized the GJ search functions taps out at 500 posts. So, I switched tactics. The stated criteria in post #1 was the trophy would be "for the individual with 20 or more posts on this thread who has the best overall year of finds". So I searched for posts the generated "You ****" type responses from the rest of us. That was a much more managable list and one that was a lot of fun to review! Man, some of you folks found some really great deals! Wilton vises for pocket change, monster hauls for cheap money, and at least once, a free bronze 200 year old lamp!

I'm sure I missed a few, but of the folks with over 20 posts, I found 110 individual posts from 41 people that resulted in assessments of decreased atmospheric pressure. Some folks had one or two. bmwrd0 netted eleven!
I also found a lot of fantastic finds that did not generate suckage. Some of our regulars turn up stuff weekend after weekend. Example: Private Lugnutz averaged more than 6 unique unique posts per month of flea market finds. Outlawsmws was similarly prolific. While both of them garnered some YS's, I felt that several of our "top producers" should get consideration for sheer quantity--not of overall posts, but of finds.

I had to make some tough choices to to get the list down to 10, mostly because that's the limit for a Garage Journal poll. I hope no one feels dissed or left out. Remember, this is all in good fun, and the only prize for "winning" is a slapped together mash-up of leftover junk from my garage. We all win by getting to revel in each others finds and sharing our knowledge with each other.

Okay, so here are the finalists (the post totals are from about a week ago):

Each of the finalists' user names should link to a GJ search result for their 2019 GJGS posts so you can do your own research on their finds. The poll for voting is right here in the General Tool Discussion forum.

Good luck to all the candidates--voting will be open for one week!
