It is stamped W. Germany on it.

I believe it is a vintage Wabeco 2 1/2 inch vise.

This is the closest one I could find on the internet. It is a bit smaller.

https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-wabeco-15-small-vise-made-524830993

Appreciate any info if you know about these vises.

I posted this on the Garage Sale thread, but thought I might get some help from you knowledgeable folks.

In my excitement over finding three vises for a total of $25, at one estate sale last week, I failed to properly examine them all. The black vise, with the obvious repair to the spindle didn't bother me too much because I thought it was unusual with its dynamic jaw to the rear and a full back-to-front centerline mounting slot. I didn't notice until I got home that the dynamic jaw's right side guide tab was broken off and missing. So that's a bummer. I'd still like to know who made it and for what application but since there are no maker's marks or stamps on it whatsoever, I'm at a loss as to where to start researching--so I'll start here! Does anyone recognize this vise? It has 2.5 inch jaws.

05 Dec 19-2.jpg05 Dec 19-3.jpg05 Dec 19-4.jpg

This would be the application, as to maker... looks like this makers syle had the anvil horn as did Bonney. Advertised as being heavy at 8 lbs.

From England to New England! I’ve been wanting a quick adjust Record for a long time now and finally sucked up the price of shipping and bought this 84. Great shape. Had an easy life. I’m just going to clean it and grease it.

bsaint: Now I wonder why I fix vises to a load balancing plate, put styrofoam plates on all sides and thin fibreboard to stop the plate from going through the styrofoam when all it takes is some bubble wrap :)
Oh right, maybe because of this:

Here a photo of an original packaging of a baby bison 50mm vise. Might help somebody someday.

Oh right, maybe because of this:

Handles are most vulnerable during shipment. I've had two handles bent in mail this year.

While we are at quick adjust, I got this FIX (=quick) vise just recently. Made in east(ern) germany, I think they borrowed some british design back in the day :). This is a 5", the smallest size they made. Even found a nice letter for it.

I have been told that fedex from .uk to .us is "humane", compared to .de to .us.

The seller used eBay worldship which is pricey ($119 to ship 42 pounds) but they did make it seamless. All the customs forms and what not. Tracking is slow to update but I bought this 12/2 and it arrived today.

Prentiss #153, I really like it due to not having the typically cast clamp. Anyone have idea on the approximate value?

Nice, the 84 is the cast steel (malleable iron) version, they are strong and seem to hold up to hard use well, the fasteners are probably Whitworth.

Thanks bastel! I’ve had one of these for several years, but never knew who made it. It's marked Poland but that’s all I knew until you posted the picture. Only other difference is that mine has 63 mm jaws(about 2 1/2 in.) A very well made vise, at least as good as my Wilton baby bullets, maybe better.

This Prentiss has been on and off of the boards around here for about $300 or so which is obviously crazy. I could tell the seller was motivated and actually got him down to $140. 4c2b762a5b561569023bf481876b8c38.jpg

It looked like the vise had a welding issue on the deck by the lettering but I’m pretty sure it’s chewing gum. The guy was kind of a tweaker so I’ll disinfect it in the morning.

bsaint congrats on getting your 84! looks like a great

bastel unfortunately bubble wrap is a lot of folks shipping material of choice; doesn't work well but always makes opening the package "interesting". Nice Fix!

smitty another one for the collection

Baja nice little pickup for $4

That's a jewel Smitty, but you really should have throwed a plastic bag over that nice bucket seat.---Mama's going to kill you.:D
Yeah, I’m gonna be giving the vise and my seat the Lysol treatment tomorrow. I just had to check the vise out on the ride home.

Good vise advice.
Personally, I take along a plastic tub when I’m using one of our nicer cars to pick up a vise. If I’m in my 240 Volvo wagon I toss it in the back cargo area and don’t care.

What's a reasonable price for a Chas Parker No.88 in decent shape? Pipe jaws are in good shape, both flat jaws are there but pretty smooth, handle is straight. swivel base, no apparent cracks (from pictures).

It’s impossible to appraise vises without a LOT more information and several good pictures as well as where in the world it is. That’s not what this thread is for anyway.
But to give some brief guidance, is the vise in question like the Parker 88 now on eBay with a BIN price of $189 ?

Shipping was not free. That was for pick up. Rigging and shipping were at buyers expense as per description.

TG:
Obviously I didn’t read the whole story. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for pointing that out.

Free shipping for a crated vise total weight over 200 pounds would be a lot to expect. :)

Wasn’t me...
Needed new jaw or jaws and the wrench was missing too.
But the listing said free shipping which for a 100 pound plus vise won’t be cheap.
Six inchers and bigger have their own rules.

I emailed the guy a couple times. At first he was a little gruff but I helped him out in the end. I told him the jaw is missing and is a pain to make. He said if it had the other jaw he'd ask for 2 or 300 more. I also mentioned the wrench and he basically eye rolled me but he came around. I told him to change the title from vice to vise because he'll get more hits. Also I recommended he would state if there was any cracks in it.

Of course, and normally I try to avoid asking such questions but there's one local to me (Midwest USA) in much better shape than that one on eBay (no cracks/broken parts, way fewer wear marks, has the pipe jaws in excellent shape, etc.) for $125 asking. Figured I might as well at least inquire as to a reasonable ballpark price.

Looking at it closer (I was looking on my phone before), it appears one of the jaws is welded on...

The back jaw looks like it has been brazed and the slide appears to be cracked. I’d keep looking if I were you.

Yeah,
Braze repair on the jaw plus the front horseshoe shaped retainer under the meatball is not the factory piece.
Where is the swivel hold down? I just see an open hole.
It does have the pipe jaws though..those are often missing.
The handle looks straight.

If it was near me I’d probably pay $50 but not $100
