As Sears continues to gradually disappear and my local store will be closing soon, I decided to figure out which companies actually made some of the Craftsman items I've acquired from Sears in the last few years. (I have a couple hundred Craftsman products, but I don't own anywhere near all of this stuff myself; I included other companies I found too, for other people who might want to refer to this in the future.) This manufacturer information hadn't all been gathered in one place before, and finding it all turned into a much larger project than I'd expected (this took several weeks to get together), despite only focusing on approximately the past 10 years. There is a different thread here listing manufacturer codes going back many decades, for the stamped/engraved hand tools.

I've tried to identify as many of the recent Sears Craftsman OEM vendor relationships as possible, most of which do not have that kind of handle codes. Information comes from discussions in the Sears deal thread, invoices submitted in the 2018-2019 Sears Holdings bankruptcy paperwork, a massive PDF apparently leaked from Sears HQ shared by henry29 here in early 2018, other threads on GJ and other sites, product reviews, blog posts, news articles, UPC data, etc.

The Sears product page links I've included for many of the items will retain some usefulness even if/when the Sears website shuts down at some point in the future, because the URLs contain a product identification number (SKU/model). The first three digits refers to the department ("009" is tools), the last part "000P" is filler, and the important part is the five digits in the middle (such as 12345).

Craftsman power tools & accessories manufacturers, part 1:
  • general cordless electric:
    • Craftsman 20V Max cordless with DieHard-branded batteries (sold at Sears, introduced in 2018; NOT compatible with the SBD-manufactured "V20" line sold at Lowes) = Cleva
    • Craftsman C3 19.2v cordless = Techtronic Industries (TTI), aka One World Technologies till 2018 (invoice-verified) (TTI model number prefix: '315'), nearly identical to some of TTI's Ryobi designs; later ones (2017/2018+) made by Chervon (invoice-verified & leaked-list-verified) (Chervon model number prefix: '320')
    • Craftsman Professional 20v cordless = Chervon (Nanjing Chervon Industry Co., Ltd.)
    • Craftsman Bolt-On 20v cordless = Stanley Black & Decker (SBD), nearly identical to the B&D Matrix line (and the accessory heads are interchangeable)
    • Craftsman Nextec 12v cordless = Chervon, similar to their Menards Masterforce 12v line (invoice-verified & leaked-list-verified)
    • Craftsman 4.8v rotary tool = Bosch (Robert Bosch Tool Corp.), maker of Dremel (leaked-list-verified) (the Craftsman rotary tool accessories are interchangeable with the Dremel ones)
    • Craftsman 4v & 8v cordless screwdrivers = Positec (leaked-list-verified & somewhat invoice-verified)

Craftsman power tools & accessories manufacturers, part 5:
  • lawn/garden (outdoor power tools):
    • Craftsman 24V Max cordless lawn/garden tools (model number prefix: '151') = probably Cleva (which also makes the LawnMaster brand)
    • most recent corded lawn/garden tools - leaf blowers, weed trimmers, electric mowers (& unpowered push mowers) (model number prefix: '151') = probably Cleva
    • recent corded chainsaws (example) = Zhejiang YAT Electrical Appliance Co. (invoice-verified)
    • gasoline-powered mowers/tractors/tillers = mostly Husqvarna until 2017, with some MTD since 2010, and entirely MTD for 2018; then Sears lost MTD too for 2019 (somewhat invoice-verified)
    • recent gasoline-powered weed trimmers (example) (model number prefix: '154') = Zhejiang YAT Electrical Appliance Co. (invoice-verified)
    • weed trimmer replacement line spools = Stanley Black & Decker (SBD) (invoice-verified)
    • If the DieHard-branded lawn/garden power tools announced in May 2019 ever make it into stores, they will be manufactured by Zhejiang YAT Electrical Appliance Co.

Great star probably made the tool bag for the extreme grip tool set since it looks like their designs though I’m not sure how you’d go about verifying it since I don’t think they make the tools. I think the set was simply comprised of some of the individual tool pieces and sold as a package deal with the bag.

I still have cutting oil and air tool oil that I purchased on clearance that was packaged for hanging peg displays which our store’s planogram had for those. I’ll see if it has the country of origin.

Chainsaws were Husqvarna (pro series), Poulan (which is also made by husqvarna) in regular series and more recently MTD (incredipull models with metal crank cases). The MTD ones are Chinese sourced. This doesn’t go by MTD products either like most of the MTD stuff it’s MTD south/southwest/Arizona or something along those lines the name is kinda misleading. I ran across it while ordering an air filter for mine.

I have some others I’ll check into such as pole saws, an earlier 4 cycle leaf blower (might be a ryobi rebadge) etc.

Nice informative postings. So this is where you have been for the last week? I haven't seen any activity from you on the Sears.com deals thread; I thought that maybe you were having a rough go that your local Sears is closing.

I thought that maybe you were having a rough go that your local Sears is closing.

I think you hit the nail on the head with a Craftsman hammer. Working on the reference list was most likely withdrawal therapy for him.

I'll post the list thread link in the deals thread when I'm ready to tackle the catching-up that reloading that thread will lead to; going to get some sleep first.
Sleep well Hex; and know you are among friends, most of whom share your loss.

You need a different hobby

It’s interesting info for some of us.

For a long time this was (and still is to a now lesser degree) a way to get economically friendly better name brand tools rebranded for Sears. The extreme SYW discounting goes back a decade and there were 15 years or so before that of the same stuff between their better credit cards and register coupons.

Some older stuff still sporadically shows up especially now that they’re emptying warehouses.

My dad started heavily shopping Sears for deals and clearance in the early 1990s when I was a kid and I continued as soon as a had a job and a car. They had tons of short lived products going back further than this list from all sorts of companies. It’s interesting to know where some of this stuff came from. Sad that Sears is a shell of what it was but it’s been fundamentally on the way down since the early 1990s, god knows I made more than enough trips there (my dad went like twice a week).

Thumbing through that list, I keep thinking how I haven't seen this product or that item in my store for many years.

Wow,incredible post. You put a lot of work into this. Very well done.

A couple additions/notes the cable operated hose clamps used to be made in France they’ve been made in Taiwan for at least the last 18 months and seem to have disappeared after the blowout sale.

Ulman devices also made a 23 1/2 claw pickup tool for sears.

For anyone looking for older craftsman info, here a link to an excellent reference:

Over the years, Many smaller companies remained in business by producing products branded for Sears. Tools, and clothing, farm machinery, houses, chicks, toys, car parts, lawnmowers and mostly anything people needed could be bought thru the Sears catalog. Sears was a terrific catalog retailer. RIP

Your list definitely reflects how incredible Sears once was; especially their tool section. Thank You for Your time and dedication in preparing, and generously sharing Your list.

Hexen, tool chests made post 2017 are USA only. (Waterloo/SBD) closed their Mexico plant. :)

Beyond that, very great list of info. Some even I didn't know. :)

Rumor has it that SK made the Craftsman Professional full polish wrenches. I don't have much Craftsman but I have the 1 1/16 thru 1 1/2 Professional combination wrenches and they are very nice tools.

Yep. The old versions. New versions were made by Armstrong till 2012ish. I have a few of the Metric ones from Armstrong.

They are in the pile on the left. lol. "Craftsman Industrial".
