Merry Christmas! Is this the thread to add a Vise with weight, size, etc? Got a few that aren't on the spreadsheet and was just wondering.

You’re in the right place, post up.

Jonshonda, I have the same problem with my Columbian 608 handle.---In the winter it catches my coat with every turn.---This makes it difficult when I am trying to clamp something at an exact depth or point on the item in question, or it's something real heavy and my left arm is already trembling.---But I do like that big old vise, so I'll just have tolerate the long handle.

I perfect example yesterday when I was removing the large mushroom from a used chisel I bought w/ an angle grinder. I was using my small Prentiss No 53 to hold the work, and using a small PC 4.5amp grinder for material removal. It didn't have to reach down to my knees to grab the end of the handle, nor take one step to the left (if left in the horz position). It was a nice light, nimble setup that didn't require a lot of clamping force and worked great.

Jonshonda
Intruders usually get to see my Parker shotgun collection before they make it to the vises.
I hear what you’re saying about small parts in big vises. I have various sizes and even a beater bolted down for whatever comes up.

Ohh, so you distract them with nice guns to steal and pursued them from stealing your prized possession....the vises!! :lol_hitti

Some people hire Mr. Smith & Wesson to guard their place, (Present company included), but Smitty hired Mr. Parker to guard the Prentiss's.---Mr. Parker is a very capable guardsman as well.;)

Sweet! I'm sure you got a great deal on it. Any idea what that bench retails for?

Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

Great deal actually. couldn't get off work fast enough to get there. I remember tehm being 1599 or 1699....

According to this 2011 document, on page 199,

https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/15316249/net-924-discount-matrix/199

Model # KWUS601A1PCM listed for $1595, had a net price of $1037 and weighed 356 lbs.

I have to ask, where did you find that site? was that just a google search based off the part number?

Good afternoon everyone,

I'll lead with this.... I have little to no idea how to navigate thru a "forum" or even how they really work

I joined this forum several years ago when I received my grandfather's '46 No.4 bullet vise, which had been sitting under his workbench for long as I can remember. I got hooked up with a guy who makes custom jaws and that was honestly the last time I got one here.

Anyway I have a new project, it's a bigger younger Wilton bullet this time. How can I determine the model off the casting numbers?l

Where is this Wordpress site that you speak of? :headscrat

I sent you a PM with a link. I don't know if he wants it linked on here. Not hard to find, in my opinion, with a Google search of "bench vise jaws wordpress" no quotes for others wondering.

How wide across are the jaws? Looks like a C0 or C1 (it should say on it). GJ member KMScott probably got you the jaws for your grandfather's bullet vise, but he is no longer selling them. There could be a new source for these jaws in the new year, but that seems to be pending. Please do post more pictures when you have them.

Here are two in it's current state.

It had about ⅛" of 5 or 6 different coats of paint on it when I got it. Couldn't tell that the swivel base had been welded.

Jaws are 5" wide

Does the tube come out of the dynamic jaw? It's clearly 2 pieces just not sure how they separate.

Yes, it is threaded and pinned for anti rotation. Which is what that 4th larger hole in the face of the dynamic jaw is for (1st picture 10ish o clock). Unless it is not tight, or the jaw alignment is off, leave it alone.

Nice...You might want to have Santa bolt that bench to the wall, that vise looks like a beast.

You know you're getting bored when you want to swap out a Prentiss No 95 for a No 22, a Prentiss No 53 with an Athol 625, and a Reed 214R with a Reed 2C.

So tonight I stayed late at work to get some more work done on the RI 143B I first mentioned on page 3825.

Tonight I finished modeling everything up for kicks and was able to get a good start on the fixture I plan to use to put 1/2-13 screws in the vise (blue column in the assembly). I will indicate the column straight before I tighten it down and load the vise onto it. The vise will be located against the square face of the column by tightening up a 3/4-10 bolt in the bottom of the vise. In addition to the 3/4-10 bolt the vise will be setting on 1-2-3 blocks or jack screws. Supporting the bottom (or the back, if it is on a bench in use) I can get a good clamp force down on the dynamic support before I drill and tap. I mentioned in my previous post that the crack will close up some with a relatively small amount of force, much less force than what two 1/2-13 screws will generate once installed. I feel having the dynamic support in as close to final positon as possible (crack closed up) while drilling and tapping will help to minimize any possible binding.

After I get the ½-13 screws installed I will start working on a swivel base retrofit. I will be retrofitting a newer style RI swivel base I picked up off of eBay. This retrofit will require decreasing the diameter of the bung on the bottom of the vise so it slips into the smaller diameter ID of the swivel base. This will be done on a rotary table along with skimming the surface that the base will make contact with so it is nice and flat. I had all of this in mind earlier so the fixture I am currently making will also work on the rotary table. I will share more about this when I get there!

Got this leg vise from a buddy that picks, He found it mounted to this old workbench in an old barn in Thornberry Tx. I bought the vise bu he wants a lot for the work bench. I haven't got to clean it up yet but dont see any markings on it. A 2 under the bench mount is all. ill get some time into cleaning it up and hopefully end up with the original bench to remount it on in the near future.

Picked up this Aussie classic it’s a Dawn “Super Grade” Offset vice. It was attached to a steel bench I bought, nice added bonus. fc6370b884bc45ac47651bf5e0e19520.jpg

Seems like forever since I have had time to fool with any vises or stands.
Just took delivery of this fine starrett 924-1/2 from Colorado.
Kevin dolled it up proper, new jaws and handle.
I'm really digging the profile of the handle ends.
This is the first starrett I have owned and are really looking forward to making a stand for it.

Very nice vice and table. If you do not mind me asking, what does a vice and table like that sell for in Australia? Thanks

Nice Starrett, Royce. Especially like the handle and jaw work. I’ve become fond of the Starrett and have now accumulated a few. What kind of stand are you thinking?
